1992 True Value Candlepin Bowling Championship - Full Telecast
Спорт
Here's the full telecast from one of the best Candlepin Bowling Championship shows I can remember when I was growing up. This telecast featured: Tom O'Brien, Jack Quinn, Peter Surette, Tom Olszta, and Paul Berger.
Enjoy and R.I.P. Don Gillis and Pilgrim Lanes.

“KNOCK IT OVAH!” I have to laugh at the people yelling in the background because I used to bowl in candlepin leagues in MA. I miss that energy!
What a fantastic show. All these bowlers were great and Don Gillis is the best announcer ever.
This has to be the greatest candlepin ever televised.
Came here for the candlepin bowling, stayed for the bitchin' throwback commercial breaks!
Ended up on my recommended today while working, ended up having 3hrs of these videos play in the background today. This is wholesome broadcasting and I loved the energy, actually just got back from a candlepin lane down the road from me. Wanted to see how I stacked up to these pros from 30 years ago. Averaged around 84 with absolutely no practice, might take this up as a hobby and find a league up here in MA. Thank you so much for the content.

funny enough, i used to bowl in leagues in the 2010s and decided to go bowling for the first time since covid (theres a candlepin place down the road from me). my score? 84 as well .... 😆
Those commercials. Wow, talk about a blast from the past. Amazing how far they've come in quality (some not so much).
Don Gillis was first class
Paul Berger..."Mr 500." I have seen that show here on KZread. That has to be one of the greatest moments in Candlepin Bowling history on TV.
Tom Olszta against Paul Berger! The Ali/Frazier of candlepin bowling!
Tommy Olzsta beating Craig Holbrook by throwing a triple strike was amazing.
Pilgrim lanes gone. Now a medical building. So sad to see all the candlepin buildings getting torn up. I had so many good memories at pilgrim lanes on primrose st in Haverhill ma.

@@markwitte9773 I think all the television shows went off the air. There was a show a few years back candlepin for kids. Not sure if it's still on. There are still candlepin bowling alleys in new England. But alot of them have closed in recent years. The one I bowled at as a kid closed during the COVID-19 shutdown.
Man, I miss Big East football. If Penn State had joined them instead of the Big Ten, they'd still be around today
I remembered watching this live as a kid. The energy in this building and telecasts was truly awesome. Thank you for uploading and reliving my childhood
There is an "everyman" type of humility to this. Just guys rolling for the love of the game. That's fantastic. Now I have to search for a Candlepin lane in Southern California...

good luck with that. the sport is even disappearing fast in massachusetts and throughout new england. the young people now don't have a lot of interest in bowling so the land the bowling lanes are sitting on is for the most part becoming strip malls or condos etc. i've bowled for 50 yrs and still in a league at 74 yrs old and i love it.
Paul Berger was unstoppable in 1992
Wolfman, I think it'dve been a cool thing for the winner of the True Value Candlepin Bowling Championship to face the winner of, from Canada, the ATV Mens Candlepin Bowling Championship. It would end up being a 2 match(3 games per match), total points affair, happening both here at Pilgrim Lanes for Match 1, and then move to Sackville, Nova Scotia, Canada at the Sackville Superbowl for Match 2. Both the U.S. and Canadian ends would be live broadcasts on both WCVB in the Boston area(with stations in the other 5 New England states joining in), as well as across the Maritimes on ATV, as it would be a joint broadcast with the same commercials seen in both countries. The announcer booth would have 4 men in it as well....Don Gillis and Ed Harding from WCVB, and both Bruce Stephen and Paul Mennier(MEN-Yay) from ATV. The guarantees for the 2 bowlers would be $50,000 to the champion, and $25,000 to the runner up(players' native currency used for prizing to avoid conversion and tax complications). Would you have watched something like that? XB

I tried throwing overhand. I got thrown out instead.
Tom Surette vs Tom Olszta was an amasing match, one of my all time favorites and ive seen nearly every candlepin show on youtube.....now of course there a few more that ive sen that just amazed me , but I only comment on this one because im watching it and i thought about it lol. but man, what a match, what a match it was, and only 1 game only.........Olszta and Mike Morgan are my top two bowlers to watch in their prime ( Tony Leblanc too here in Moncton NB) rememebr in their prime, ive seen mikey bowl the worlds before but never Olszta. chris Sargent is my favorite modern day bowler, oh cant forget get about Peter flynn, again only just recently i seen him bowl last time the tournament was in Moncton NB

Tom Olszta totaled 403 in his three strings combined. Peter Surette and Paul Berger combined for 431 in those same three strings. Great bowling in this one.
Have'nt bowled a candlepin game for real...yet. Getting familiar with the game on a phone app. Recorded my experience (Keith Ball candlepin). Simulation on this game seems realistinc. Just like the best candlepin bowlers, throwing it fairly hard, up the middle and straight gives you the best chance.
Why on earth did I start watching this??? More importantly...why can't I seem to turn it off???

There's a video on here of a tournament from 1982 and one of the prizes was a new Corvette "worth $22,000." Meanwhile here in the future, when the new C8 Corvette came out in 2020, the base model was $59,000 and nobody who actually bought one got it for less than about $70,000 with the options and the COVID shortage markup.

not true at all
Such an unfair tournament. Should have had brackets rather than winner moves up. Imagine if O'Brien won string 1 & 2 and then had to play a 3rd string, tired from the previous matches, against a completely fresh opponent. I'd rather seem them complete at their best at an even playing field.
@MrChrisdube

Step ladder finals is very common in bowling. The other thing you are not taking into account is that bowling is not very exhausting. Moreover, the challenger is already dialed while the opponent has to acclimated to the lane.

They did the bracket format from 1983 until 1990, and then went to the stepladder format in 1991 onward. From what it sounds like, they went this way to basically make it more rewarding for the #2 and #3 placed seeds to at least be guaranteed a certain payday, where as in the bracket format in the previous Championship shows, the #2 seed bowlers ended up getting eliminated by the #5 seed in the first match 6 out of 8 times (1983 and 1988 were the only times that the #2 seed beat the #5 seed to advance), causing them to get the short end of the stick even though they qualified almost higher than everyone else. And technically, the stepladder format only made the #4 or #5 seed bowl one more game to win it all if you think about it.
This isn’t bowling.
