When I was a little kid back in the 60’s between Lowell, Tewksbury and Billerica, Ma. there were quite a few duckpin lanes. They have all seemed to disappear around here now. Just Candlepin (my favorite) and 10 pin lanes now. Too bad, my Dad and I used enjoy both duckpin and Candlepins. 😊

I have really never seen this either, but have noticed one thing totally different to regualr bowling, if you dont throw a strike on the 1st ball, and if you dont pick up the rest of the pins with the 2nd one, you actually get a 3rd chance to pick up what's left....now thats different.

That’s because duck pin is harder. You can’t really hook the ball to get strikes the same way you can in tenpin. Your window is tiny, and the pins themselves are also very small and don’t collapse as easily as regular tenpin bowling pins.

That's awesome! Many years ago, I bowled in a tournament, at a bowling center that had both tenpin and duckpin lanes. The tournament was tenpin. I had a miserable day, shooting 438 for a 3 game set (at the time, I was about a 160 bowler). While waiting for friends to get done, who started later than I did, I bowled 3 games of duckpin. I actually shot 4 FIFTY seven, about 20 pins better with a last game of 190, my highest game ever.

If you are a ten pin bowler, I doubt it highly. You have a much greater chance of chopping through the head pin and leaving spare "opportunities" you dont see in conventional ten pin. I bowled both; I carried about a 120 average in duckpins; high 180s to low 190s in ten pin, and when I bowl candlepin, I generally bowl around 100 to 110.

Let's put it this way - there's nothing like throwing a ball just a teeny bit off the pocket in duckpins and getting a two pin 3-9 chop, then throwing the next two balls through the hole the first ball created. Three balls near the pocket and scoring two... Or how about filling a spare with that same 3-9 push for two count? The lanes and spacing are identical, but only a 5" ball.

The game is fun and shot my new high game which is a 100 but their Wood Lanes were terrible, the balls were hooking because it was severely damaged from the hot temperature and that place has no ventilation. That's Duckpin Bowling in the Philippines for ya, different wood lanes with no oil and there's no airconditioning. But when I came for my senior highschool graduation pictorial last year 2021 at a photo studio next to the place and while waiting for my parents, I decided to film the current state of that place. It was completely unplayable...there's a bunch of stuff around their lanes.

@@paxhumana2015 not about strength, it's about power. You get so much from no-thumb (left hand never touches the ball at release as I'm sure you know). Many two-handers can release the ball in a respectable fashion one-handed too. But if you got the same precision with two as one, but a lot more power from more revs and speed playing two-handed, why play one-handed? Or two-finger, same thing at the end, haters gonna hate. -Yours, one handed bowler

It's a "regional" bowling probably originating in New England. It's similar to "Candlepin Bowling". Have no idea why it has hung around. New England is now part of the rest of the US.
