Huge shoutout to Nicola Materazzi, the man that almost single handedly designed this car (and a lot of other Ferrari, from the gto to the Testarossa). From the engine, to the gear box, to the air intakes, almost everything of this car was produced by his mind. A real genius throwed away by the Fiat management.

indeed. the GTO Evo had poor drag coefficient so Materazzi asked for a different shape to be drawn and wind tunnel tested for the F40. a lot of the intakes, vents, the 3rd middle pipe for the wastegate, the very light interior are his ideas. the car got criticised for a number of things which happened because after he left nobody implemented things like the option of different size seats or on-track training which Enzo had agreed would have been offered. Fiat simply pocketed the money and made many more than originally planned.

If you're having trouble imagining just how quick 200mph is, in 1989 I was standing on a small parking lot next to Autobahn 7 (I think, we were driving to Austria and I was sharing driving duties with my dad) when one of these came by at full pelt. Before I'd said "Dad, look, a Ferrari!", it was all but out of view.

I remember seeing a very old video filmed from the cockpit of a car - my memory is saying it was an F40 - going flat out, 200mph, on a regular highway/autobahn/motorway/whatever. Seeing how quickly it approached and passed regular traffic - traffic that would have been moving at 60-80mph probably - was downright scary. Literally no margin for error at that speed.

The F40 -- What a dream Car ! The year was 1992. I went to the Dealership on Common Avenue. in Boston. There was a "MAGNUM PI FERRARI" parked in front of the building. Impressed, I walked around the vehicle. However, in the Dealership there was a 1992 F40 -- it blew my brains out ! Upon exiting the showroom, I saw the "Magnum Ferrari" again. Somehow, it looked -- insignificant ! The body, even the weels looked rather common . Analysing all the array of modern Supercars -- and the F40 still takes the cake !

Spokane Wa 1994 my uncle Jason RIP picked me up from fifth grade in a yellow 308 gts Ferrari. Spokane is a smaller city for sure, probably 250k Population back then. Not known for any exotic cars, it was amazing he had one. And many others porsche, lotus, lamborghini. My uncle had them all, not at once, just trade in/upgrade. However I always got to ride in the exotics. I got more seat time then anyone, besides Jason himself. Acura NSX, Dodge Viper, hot rods, muscle cars. So I got bit at a early age and still have the sickness. The 308 was awesome and I'll never forget the smiles per gallon and thumbs up. RIP uncle Jason and thanks for the memories. I haven't seen a Ferrari in Spokane to this day. They recently built a Porsche dealership in liberty lake, that is about it. Now the population has doubled and someone could probably do well opening a car lot for these cars, a smaller lot of course. CDA idaho not far and the "Celebrities" are buying up vacation homes on lake CDA to the dismay of locals. Anyway, love the channel Jay Leno thanks for sharing these legendary card, truly entertaining in a time of negativity and nothing but crap on TV.

But the F40 is definitely more, since has the ultimate mental experience crazy car for today streets, the whole thing pops instantly if is ever used among the other common cars, is looking very intimidating, with that sound it definitely turn heads, the racing-style body with big wing and those massive rear wide Pirelli Zero.. is really Epic.

There's a reason there's not even love for it: from a distance, its obviously easy to like the car, but owning and driving one makes it very hard to love it. Yes, it obviously performs extremely well, but its basically a street legal race car. As such, it is supremely uncomfortable. The car's ride is bumpy and harsh, the shifter and clutch are heavy (as one would expect of most supercars of the era) and because the engine is bolted directly to the car's structure, you obviously feel the engine vibrating the entire car and while a lot of people might like the sound of that at first, it wears thin quite quickly. The F50, like the Countach for most people, is a classic case of never meet your heroes.

I think these videos are not about looks or consumer advise. I think a jay leno's garage video about that car would be very interesting.

alot of owners/reviewers actually prefer the F50 over the F40
