I have a 78 that was a factory 4 speed. I raced it for 18 years with different combinations of Muncie's and finally a Doug Nash drag race 5 speed. There is nothing like spinning a small block Chevy and banging gears. It's better than sex, it lasts like 10 seconds and you can do it 10 times in a day. Cool video. Heads up for wannabe gear bangers, it costs a lot of money and time to make one of these work, but good god is it fun!

I know a lot about this combo. Mine is a 78, it came with 3 pedals bucket seats and a console. You can buy a whole kit with pedals and all from Honest Charley. You can and will break every part in the drivetrain. Mine has a 9 inch with 35 spline axles a custom driveshaft that is 3.5 inches in diameter .125 wall thickness. I have broken my Doug Nash so many times I get Christmas cards from Liberty gear and G- Force, but it's better than sex, same 10 seconds but you can do it 20 times in a day

When did they shift pattern? Originally had 1st in far left and DOWN,making TOP GEAR far right and down , known as RACING 5 SPEED pattern...

completely different style shifter... You just pull it back for second, forward for third, back for forth, forward for fifth... there's no "side to side" movement in it... the gate and springs do the work basically... look up a "vertigate shifter" and you'll see how it works.

I pull into the water and scuff the tires in 1st, pull ahead, shift to 3rd for the burnout. Back to 1st and stage.
