My dad had a 73 400 F/A and and raced in the stock classes with it and did very well. Great looking sled in its time. Love the orange on the hood.

Thanks for looking.. Yes they were very competitive sleds. I think not only the colors but skidoo produced some of the best looking sleds in the 70s

Bringing back good memories looking at that. Lived in the U.P of Michigan on a farm outside Rapid River right on the Whitefish River. Had a 74 Free air 400 identical to this one as well as a TNT 640..also had an old CR250 Elsinor dirt bike. Think it was also a 74 ...of course we had our good ole Honda 3-wheelers too! Between those and my guns, there was a very content 15 year old version of me on that 400 acre farm.

Back in the day my friend had a TnT just like this one. He bent the crank on the motor when the clutch came apart. We swapped in a 640 Rotax from a different sled. Would pull the skis a couple feet off the ground. We were messing around in his driveway with it. He did a wheelie and the track snapped. Wadded up 5 layers thick between the drive gig and the tunnel. Had to cut it out and replace the drive shaft and cogs.

72 400F/A were rare as hell, wasn't forward design motor & had a black mesh screen opening in the hood my bud had one, his dad was 3rd ski-doo dealer in Ont, he also had a 71 250 Elan Blizzard, & a 75 245Rv, I purchased a 74 340F/A brand new back in the day, it ran 74MPH on a track dyno, still have the papers!

@@randyphillips4001 I have owned just about every version of snowmobile Skidoo built from 69 through 74. A friend had an old snowmobile junkyard and i would fix them and ride them. Even have a double track . I got all the F/A 's from a friend thats father did a race team. My family sold yamaha sleds back in the 70's and I had a few of them as well.

That TNT Free Air put me off snowmobiling forever. Everybody who bought one quickly found out they were belt burners. The clutches were no good, I fought Bombardier for over a year, so did my friends. I never bought another new snowmobile again.

Yep clutches were updated to the square shaft. Uncle blew four belts before noon but I never blew the belt. Cure was a shim in rear left motor mount to stop the motor from twisting sideways and exploding the belt. Was a fun sled to drive until fluffy snow would freeze throttle cables ,brake cable and steering to . Fond memories but am happy to just watch someone else drive it now 😂

A pair of Mikuni VM 36 Carbs would make that a very different snowmobile. Tiliston carbs were the weak point on them.

that motor appears to be similar to the type 377 which has displacement of 368cc they used that motor extensively in the citations owned the citation ss it had the larger mikuni 34mm twin carb and later reduced to 30mm twin carbs in the formula s the bore was i think 61mm and stroke 61mm also the motor was bored larger for the 500 cc models of fan cooled although the 34mm twin carb citation ss was quite fast lots of power that 1974 is unique with the twin tilotsons

Had this exact machine back in the day and was pretty fast could beat the 440 F/C TNT's...that seat is not original to that machine it's off of a 73 Olympic...the proper seat should be put on it makes the machine look more aggressive.
