I can still remember the Rolf Harris adverts for Stylophone....went something like "Hey kids I've got an organ in my pocket`.

A friend of mine in the late 70s had a massive Stylophone. It was at least 3 octaves, had more controls and was in a brown and black plastic case.

After you mentioned the use of the Stylophone by David Bowie, I paused your video and checked out the two Bowie tracks. You Sir are a fount of Stylophone knowledge.

Oh, that is a great start for pocket things to come. In deed there was (and still is going on) a revival of standalone pocket sized toylike sound devices far apart from apps for smartphones. Would be nice to compare the market shares between the Stylophone line and the today's Pocket Operators. But I never knew the Stylophone was advertised as a "pocket organ" back then. Thus it was even more funny to hear Steve talking from the sound of a "crappy sax" at 3:19 and then that following sneeze at position 3:55. Could it be kind of a delayed allergic reaction because there was anything bad mentioned regarding a saxophone and its sound ;-)? Only the Emu knows which fruitlessly tried to escape, so we will never know. Thank you for this funny and educational video as always, all the best :-)!

I've been subscribed since I watched the Hammond S6 video. I think this is the first video with an original stylophone. Every other video I see is with the modern remake. The 555 timer is a very simple chip that creates a square wave.

There's a decent amount of vintage stylophone videos but most are older videos

Nice to see, I have an original one too. It actually came in 3 basic types, Bass, Standard, and Treble. The new David Bowie one is a good replica and has a switch to give you all 3 types.

The original Stylophones have a different sound to the later NE555 ones, mainly because the unijunction transistor oscillator produces a spike waveform, and the NE555 produces square waves.

yeah unijunction transistors where designed to do sawtooth like waveforms , and there are ways to make a 555 generate a sawtooth waveform , but though the circuitry to do this makes the 555 really unstable, so usually that is why a 555 isn't really used to do sawtooth waveforms.
