When these are new they're shipped with a protective coating on the contact surface that they recommend polishing off before using, using any standard metal polish. So If it sounds noisy / dirty / crackly give it a polishing.

Which one ? The sixties/seventies version, or the 2000 ish first reissue ? The first reissue has good tuning, but it is digital, so the sound is different. I don't like it very much. The one in the video is true analog.

It was never intended to be a studio instrument - like you said IT'S A TOY.

Because it’s quite literally one of the cheapest functioning synthesizers that money can buy. It’s a low entry point gateway in the world of synthesis. And because of that, it’s very popular. We ought to have reasonable expectations for the device.
