This is quite an adorable version. 49+ years ago I can recall Mama Cass putting her soul into the song and "belting" it out as if Bessie Smith was singing it.
This song comes at You like a surreal dream, Haunting atmospheric melody, and very ROMANTIC!
I LOVE THIS Record! And the Song as a whole!
This fits the milieux for which it was intended-the high society clubs of the urbane settings of New York, Chicago, Paris, etc. It was simply a nice dance tune back then. Its becoming a hot, soulful jazz standard makes it difficult for today’s listeners to harken back to what it was for earlier audiences.
I love Louis Armstrong’s version, but this Fred Rich 1930’s rendition is sweet.
I had never heard this version before, but it's excellent.
Just listen to Doris Days version from 1957. Just magnificent!
My favorite contemporary version is the Dorsey Brothers' (as The Travelers), with Scrappy Lambert's vocal, but this one, too, is good.
Smith Ballew's take is well worth listening to.
Mama Cass did it better.
