I like the melody of this tune, plus the guitar solo towards the beginning is pretty nice.

Interesting hearing Hamp doing something more on the sentimental side for a change

Sentimental as a crack train. Maybe if he'd made his music more "depression," RCA wouldn't have canned him.

Well, Bing's is my favorite version, of course, but I would rate this Hamp affair high on my list, with the attractive guitar spot lending an appropriate bucolic air to the proceedings. Cabins, representing a haven, appear to have been a favorite topic in this period in popular music, a time in which the world was moving rapidly, perhaps too rapidly for some, to more urbanized modes of living. There was this one -- in the cotton; that one in the pines; the one of dreams, and that rustic homestead turned up in many another lyric, even if not featured in the title. The great team of Frank Perkins and Mitchell Parish collaborated on a slew of pastoral ditties, often set in a Southern US perhaps more of imagination than reality -- "Stars Fell on Alabama"; "Sentimental Gentleman from Georgia"; "Down a Carolina Lane" and, we must believe," "Emaline."

I think you'll like the _South of the Mason-Dixon Line_ album by the Yank Lawson & Bob Haggart Jazz Band. Both _Cabin in the Cotton_ and _Stars Fell on Alabama_ are featured. But I don't think it has been reissued on CD.

@@henridelagardere264 It hasn't been, to my knowledge. Their _With a Southern Accent_ , of the same theme, is a favorite of mine.

Session personnel info is pretty vague for the Hamp band back then. The only unverified source that I've seen suggests that it was singer Socci also on guitar.
