Jo Stafford's interpretations are so fine, I doubly regret her fingernails-on-a-blackboard intonation problems -- with her unusual tendanccy to sing a bit sharp is twice as grating as someone's singing a bit flat. I've always wondered whether she would have had anything like her long and successful career had she not been backed by the supurb Paul Weston, her supportive (and 3:10 3:10 tonally forgiving) husband. Does anybody know if he actually wrote those wonderful arrangements himself, or just picked wonderful arrangers, as did Montavani, Jackie Gleason, and company? [I first became aware of her, of them, when in hi school in the mid '50s, when their "You Belong to Me" (" See the pyramids along the Nile..."), with her persistent slightly sharp intonation, dominated the pop radio waves for what seemed like sgonixing months. I first became aware of him when he did that fabulous back-up work on Liberace's LPs! Well, he made his eifes recirds worth putting up with.]

it was Patti Page who was the first vocalist to record her own voice, sound on sound, with a song called 'Confess', in 1947: Bill Putnam, an engineer for Mercury Records, was able to overdub Page's voice, due to his well-known use of technology.

Consider the impeccable clarity of this recording, and a lot of what nascent Capitol did. This is from '44; the war hadn't even ended yet. Yes, the shellac 78 does actually sound this good. I don't know what equipment Capitol bought and used (I'd really like to know what the cutterhead was), but they beat the pants off what Victor and Columbia were doing, and they did it ostensibly with off-the-shelf kit, having just opened their doors, where the "big players" had a history of in-house development over decades.

Yikes! While I wasn't the one who did the cutting, I should have listened more carefully when I picked up that audio file from who-knows-where back in 2017 prior to its original MusicProf78 posting. Thanks for the heads-up, Steve, and I'll probably upload a replacement one of these days. Glad that you're enjoying our music. 🎵
