We adopted a 10-year-old dog who'd been overlooked at the shelter because of his age. He was the sweetest, funniest, most loving dog who brought joy to our lives every day. He graced us with his presence for eight wonderful years. Adopting a senior is incredibly rewarding - I thoroughly recommend it!

My mom did the same...an older dog who is blind. A Bichon Frise from a rescue group. They highlighted him on tv. My mom immediately called and went and got him.Took him to lots of ophthalmologists. He has some vision. My mom was prepared to pay for any surgery. He had cataracts, those were removed. She would love for him to have perfect vision, whatever it takes. He is a love bug!❤

I got my 14-year-old pup from the pound. He's now 16 years young. When we brought him home, I soon realized he must have had a hard life. He would flinch as if I was going to hit him, and he would whimper in his sleep from nightmares. I love him so much. He's now living his best senior life. We spoil him and shower him with love and kindness. ❤

Depends if he is a dog with a high prey drive because those dreams may not be nightmares. My late pup was with us for 14 years with less than a year of his life prior to us being a mystery. We never abused him, the only time he whimpered was when we went swimming which really stressed him out. But he was a German Shepherd Alaskan Malamute mix with a very high prey drive ( he's successfully caught a number of animals). He would whimper in his sleep and huff and puff and his feet twitch.... he was chasing something in his dreams and whimpering in excitement lol

Thank you for your service. I can't imagine dumping an elderly dog that has been in your family like that. So heartless. All the dogs that my husband I have adopted in our later years have been seniors dumped by families because they were too much work, expensive or not wanted anymore. We loved them to the end, the last thing they saw before they left us were our faces.

I initially thought the same thing and there is a pretty good chance that this was not the case but I can see a scenario of where an elderly couple got this dog when they were 60 and now all of a sudden they are 80 because they didn't think it would live that long and now they can't take care of it. Like I said earlier, it is more than likely someone just didn't want the dog anymore but there are some scenarios out there where I would say "I can understand why this happened".

@@bestbeech52 Are you seriously comparing putting your parents in a private, paid facility that cares for old people who can’t care for themselves, which is a necessity in many cases, and you still visit them and check on them frequently, to abandoning your old dog in a shelter? Do you realise some old people suffer from dementia or Alzheimer’s and NEED 24/7 care? Would you rather they live alone, covered in faeces, hungry, with a risk of setting the house on fire by forgetting about the stove? Not everyone can care for their old parents 24/7, hence old people’s homes exist. You sound very ignorant.

And each month she sends us photos of our cat and we were surprised by her change she she used to be so grumpy and doesnt want to play and would bite if we approach her but with that woman she was so playfully always full of energy. And we really loved her. My brother still has her photo as his lock screen.

This story made me have tears in my eyes. I've got to say she looks really good for a dog that old. Her coat looks good and she's not underweight. Can't believe all the people who sent toys for her. She's living in paradise now and have a good life until it's her time to join all the other furry friends who have passed. ❤️

She's so happy and so very grateful for having all of the love being given to her. And there's no doubt in my mind that she absolutely loves her new family with all her heart. It is like she's determined to live as long as possible to make the most of feeling so good, and to pay them back in as many days of love as she has left. I'm so happy I'm crying 💖💞 Bless you all, you wonderful people!

We have been adopting for many years but adopting a senior is really something extra! Yes you might not be together for too long but it is so rewarding to give a senior dog the best weeks/months or maybe years of it life. Two teats ago we adopted a 16 year old and he learned and experienced things for the first time in his life! He even started jumping of steps with our other dog and playing and running. We had him for just over a year but we think it was for sure his best year! And then you can say goodbye with a smile. 🐶❤

On one hand, we might ask "How could that family dump her at the shelter? What kind of people are they?" But on the other hand, she looks to be in great shape for being 19 years old, so they must have taken good care of her for her to even reach that age, let alone be vibrant as she is. So Annie has been blessed with a long life and it's great that she can be so happy and so spoiled now.

I can't believe how a family can decide to give up on a family member at their most vulnerable time of life. This dog was with them full of energy. How is it okay that they decide that she is no longer loved simply because she is old? This breaks my heart. I only rescue seniors and they are amazing!

A lot of time, it's for the better. they probably really love her, that's why they left. they were probably going through hardships and could not afford her, so they believed that the best option was to give her away to someone who could really care for her. Think of others' situations

Honestly the idea of a senior baby (who are usually neglected for so long) being in a shelter or homeless etc in their final time is so much more heartbreaking to me than the grief I would feel loosing them. Part of a poem I seen recently said Grief is a way of saying love was here and still is and I want to give that to animals (and even people) whenever I can. Love has been here for them and they felt it 💖
