Rescuing an Energetic Labrador Retriever

Ойын-сауық

Brandon McMillan heads into rescue an abandoned labrador retriever. Apparently, this dog was way too energetic for its owners, and ended up in this shelter! What could be wrong with this puppy? no need to call them stupid, if you’re uneducated in relating to dogs, you simply will fail, but you’re not stupid…..i watched because i’m currently training my 6 mo border colllie rescue, talk about energy. Puppies only know what you’ve taught them, even though i completely understand this i’ll catch myself remembering i hadn’t taught a specific thing. She’s so smart, learns quickly. When we’re playing fetch while I’m working on my garden she brings her ball into the garden room where i’m working and puts the ball on her toy shelf so it’s easy for me to reach. Sometimes she brings the ball and tge chuckker hoping to convince me it’s time for fetch. We’re working on walking and i think of how many people would give up on her, but it takes work to teach a dog behaviors, so i think of people just not understanding that dogs, like us as children, need instruction on behaving, as children we were taught how to cope, calm down, can’t return children to the shelter so children who don’t get this training are also a problem, they’re possibly the owners returning dogs to the shelter.

@@jaisekharnair6040 i know who you called stupid, i’m on your side, who gives up a pup, but rather than stupid, a word i despise….they just didn’t know what is actually involved in actually raising a dog. Same with people having children, children require patience and resolve to help them mature…same with dog ownership…we agree,i do understand why you called them stupid, i’ll take my assessment back…because i too want to call people thst name, cheers and peace

I have an English lab I almost gave up on also at eight months but when I looked at his face I just knew there had to be SOMETHING I could do to get control. I found Charlie’s K Nine Camp for a 12 day in board training. Charlie and his assistant were very clear what my job was after the 12 days and I’ve made sure I didn’t let him down. He will be two on July 1st and he’s getting better and better but it’s not been easy so I agree with petiteme1960. Make certain this is the dog for you so you don’t have to break the dogs heart and abandon it. Labs are the number two re-homed dogs second only to pit bulls.

I also have a pure bred yellow lab he is now 11 years old we have had him since he was two where we adopted him from the shelter. I learned there are two types of labs the first type is basically like Marley from the movie Marley and me I don’t know if you have seen it but if you were interested in adopting a Labrador retriever you should see it everybody should see it the second type of labrador retriever is docile which is basically the type of Labrador retriever I have. Both personalities are wonderful and we can all learn a thing or two about unconditional love from one of the best breeds on Earth…… The Labrador retriever!!!!!!

I got my energetic ( now 6.5 year old ) pure blood yellow lab at one year old from a good home. He was potty trained for outside. I never did intense training on any of my prior dogs. I'm retired now but when I got this lab I was still working. When at work I left him in one bedroom with windows and gate. He also could see downstairs. Then 2 rooms, then all of upstairs. By 6 months he could roam 90% of home in my absence. In 2 years he roams 100% of home in my absence. He goes outside 6 to 10 times a day. I shut door but never lock door so he comes back in within 3 to 10 minutes. Im watching from inside. He was a challenge for while but I knew he'd mellow out. Still has energy. I'm totally against caging dogs.

I have a black lab named Benny, and he is just the sweetest little thing ever!!! 💕💕💕 I’ve had two other black labs in the past (RIP Arthur and JoJo) and Benny is every bit as sweet as both of them ❤ He is about a year and a half old and he is very vibrant, energetic, and adorable. We adopted him from a lab rescue center just a few weeks ago and before being rescued he was apparently a stray dog, but you wouldn’t think he was ever a stray because he sure doesn’t act like one. Benny absolutely loves meeting people and other dogs and just loves being social. I’ve only ever owned labs (specifically black labs) and they are the sweetest dogs to ever grace this planet. I can’t imagine ever giving up on a lab, they are so loyal and easy to love 💕 Honestly the only reason I can think of to give up a dog is if unexpected extenuating circumstances happen, like if the owner passes away or if the owner suddenly starts having health problems that prevent them from being able to care for the dog. In which case they should surrender the dog responsibly, like bringing them to a (reputable) shelter or rehoming them to another family that will take good care of them. Nobody should ever dump their dog into the streets.

She’s high strung to the point she has stressed herself and caused idiopathic tremors. We are trying to train her. That being said, she loves everyone and everything. She spent some time with an emergency vet (from the tremors) and the vet declared “she’s my new best friend” Definitely food oriented. Lol Bad separation anxiety which we are working on. I can’t get mad at the owners turning in that Labrador. Because I have a Labrador which is 8 months old and he is very destructive. He chases my cats, destroyed my bed, destroyed my remote control, my glasses and and his bed I bought him and not any dog bed but a foam mattress dog bed and I had him toys to chew on. And I take him walks to get energy out and let him play in the backyard but he still act up. I mean I try to do the best with him, so I’m sure the prior owner went the same thing I went through if so I can’t blame them . I just thank GOD that I have a lot of patience. I already prayed to the good LORD to put grace in him, so hopefully I will see it as he gets older because I don’t know how to train a dog , I just know how to bond with it.

I now have an Australian Cattle Dog. She is a rescue, she was dumped near a cousins place - pregnant! She had the puppies and she's been spay - now for the training. She's ok on leash but needs work on other commands. She is super smart and will get them I have no doubt.

My 12 month old lab puppies has lots of energy. But he a a beautiful boy who is training to become a therapy puppy and he will come to work with me at school. He doesn’t have a aggressive bone in his body. Sad when we as humans let animals down.

A man who owned a dog, I believe named Marly, wrote that there are different strains of Labs, calm and energetic. His dog, though he tried to carefully research, he missed the hyper part and had a heck of a time working with him. There is also the concept of "a tired dog is a happy dog", they do need (miles) of exercise. Nice work.

this is why one should be educated on the dog breed especially the challenging aspects before they are allowed to get the dog

i feel like labradors' excellent reputation actually does them more harm than good. so many people are under the impression that they're an "easy dog". there is no such thing as an easy dog. these are incredibly high-maintenance pets that need a lot of work, dedication, training, socialisation, care, and so on - no matter the breed. my lab is the light of my life, but as someone who studies & works in animal care i always make a point to tell people that a LOT of people just don't have the right sort of living situation/personality/commitment/etc. to own a dog, and also to explain the specific difficulties that come with labradors.
