15-17 Yamaha R3 Motion Pro Chain Tools & Driven Chain & Sprocket Install
We tested a few different chain tools from Motion Pro while installing a Driven Chain and Sprocket kit on the Yamaha YZF-R3 project bike.
www.sportbiketrackgear.com/mo...
The first tool is the Motion Pro Sprocket Jammer. We were really excited to see how this worked, but were left wanting more. We first tried it to break the counter shaft nut loose, but it was not very effective. It put a lot of tension on the chain by the rear sprocket, and didn't really prevent the rear wheel from rotating like we were hoping it would. We later used the sprocket jammer while aligning the rear axle, and it worked perfectly in that application. Despite not performing as well as we would have liked, we still recommend picking one up for your next chain and sprocket install.
www.sportbiketrackgear.com/mo...
The next tool was the Motion Pro PBR Chain Tool. We've been using this tool for the past couple years on our chain installs, and it works great, allowing you to press, break, and rivet your chain. We've installed a bunch of chains with this tool and it's held up from the abuse. We highly recommend this tool for your next chain install.
www.sportbiketrackgear.com/mo...
The next tool we used is the Motion Pro SlackSetter Chain Adjustment Tool. This is more of a convenience tool than anything. It helps you easily measure your chain slack, and worked great.
www.sportbiketrackgear.com/mo...
The last tool is another tool we used before, the Motion Pro Chain Adjustment Tool. The tool works great and helps you align the chain properly.

I am reall happy you having this bike. Got R3 myself and now I have a lots of repairs to do before the inspection. Cant afford to get profesionals to do that as they charge ridiculous money for the jobs. Got a friend who knows how to do these things but I would love to learn and do stuff myself so when I will have bigger bike I can have some more confidence. Watched few of your videos already and I cant thank enough. You explain everything very nicely and it is made simple enough that someone with as little confidence as me would do this. I bought a MT-03 (first bike for me) with 35k km on the odometer, which had its chain and sprockets replaced 10,000 km's ago (@25k km). The chain on mine seems to be way tighter (visual inspection, no measurement) than you have it at the end, and you're already on the tight end of the recommended spec. I haven't measured the chain tension yet but I will do it before my next ride. The previous owner has done his maintenance and the chain install all at the Yamaha dealer, so I suspect (hope) the bike hasnt been ridden for 10k km's with a too tight chain and destroyed the Counter Shaft Bearing. The bike was put away for the winter and I made a test drive and bought it in March, so it might be that the owner tensioned the chain right before winter and making it winter ready, since he also removed the battery and put it on a drip charger, cleaned and lubed the chain and also ran the bike for a few km's with fuel stabiliser. In that case, I have only put like 600km on the bike with a tight chain. This wont be a problem if I correct the slack before my next ride? I noticed the tight chain slack when I was cleaning and lubing the chain after my last ride. I can also hear a rattling/clacking/ticking noise from the front sprocket when rotating the rear wheel in the air. It's the same noise as in your video @32.04. . Is this a destroyed CS bearing or just maybe because the chain is too tight or out of alignment? Basically, am I okay if I adjust this ASAP?

I had a 2002 r6 sprocket come loose while I was riding on the freeway. All of a sudden I felt this horrible sound that felt like I hit a rock on the freeway. I remember thinking, what the hell did I hit and how did I not see that. Then I thought I should get off the freeway and look at that ASAP. Luckily I did and I didn't crash because the nut had smashed a hole in my motor and all the oil had come out, completely covering the back tire. I recommend you always lock that nut down with something so this doesn't happen to you, I could have died pretty easily. Thank god I was already exiting and wasn't using the gas any longer. Also Yamaha had a recall of this part and they rebuilt my motor free of charge.

My friend was laid up in the hospital, chain came around, knocked him unconscious and lucky he wasn’t ran over as he was on a major interstate during peak traffic. He recovered and unfortunately doesn’t ride anymore, but knowing what happened i started taking chain maintenance and torque settings seriously ever since.

havoc010101 snap on has a stud removal tool. I normally dont recommend things by brand but the set has a 10mm x 1.25 and a 10mm x 1.50 collet that locks onto the stud. It also comes with the installation collet for reinstalling the new studs. If the stud removal collet wont allow you to grasp the thread, try running a 10mm x 1.25 pitch dye. You can buy them for a few bucks on amazon, if STG sells them i would get it from him cause these videos have saved me so much in time and money, whenever i can pay it forward i do.

I am using 14 right now and the bike seems to like that map. I don’t have easy access to a Dyno so it is a multi day event so downloadable maps are much more to my liking and only do the dyno when that doesnt work

We do not have a fuel controller on our STG R3 and have over 1300 miles on it. This bike has been run with several different exhaust systems on the street and the track, zero issues with the engine. To get all of the performance best practice is to install a fuel controller. - Van

Hey, I'm impressed with your knowledge of motorcycles. Unfortunately, I have been having a problem for some time that I cannot solve. Maybe you have encountered such a case, or do you suspect something as to what might be the cause. The problem is that the wheel clutch does not engage evenly with the rim, which causes the gear to run out when the wheel is turned. The problem is only with my rim, because when I transfer the complete wheel clutch to another rim, it fits there properly. I have already replaced a whole new set of sprockets and chain, the damper clutch rear wheel and took the rim to a tire specialist who said that the rim runs straight and is not crooked.

I would not recommend installing a new chain on sprockets with that many miles on them. Best practice is to replace the chain and sprockets at the same time. The only real exception to this would be on a race bike that gets different gearing for each track it is raced on. In this case you would just inspect the sprockets before using them. - Van

Letran Brian’s advice is trusted, but if you want what Yamaha says in the manual, page 4-86 remove the chain, stretch it out flat, measure from 1 rivet then again to the 16th rivet, not link. But sequentially 2 rivets per link it it measure more than 9.42 inches or 239.3mm the chain is out of spec and needs to be replaced. Now if you have the sprocket jammer you dont need to take the chain off to measure this, get the chain tight with the sprocket jammer at the top of the rear sprocket and then measure. As far as the sprocket page 4-87 of the manual stated “more than 1/4 tooth wear to replace the sprocket. When you view a sprocket tooth, it is symmetrical new. As the chain wears on the sprocket one side will become obviously worn; and as Brian says replace the chain and sprocket as a kit is best practice.

  • @mprziv

Some of the factory front sprockets have rubber bushings on their sides. Many of the aftermarket ones do not. The rubber bushings on the oem front sprockets help reduce noise...this might be the cause in your case.

I checked alignment and tension several times. I have all the same motion pro tools you have. I bought a D.I.D chain and sprocket set. The factory chain was D.I.D so I went with that because it lasted me 17,000 miles. Maybe I should have went with a different manufacturer on the sprockets..

SlashtaCross i am using the driven front sprocket and different chain and rear sprocket than listed, but I can say mine is much better than stock. I was able to save weight switching to the lighter weight front driven sprocket and aluminum rear sprocket. Combined with a chain that is a pound lighter than stock, even keeping the OEM teeth choices for front and rear, the reduction of rotational mass allows the R3 to spin up much quicker, so much so that remapping the ECU helped take advantage of how the engine manages its fuel due to the reduction of rotational mass. I have driven on 3 other bikes just on my R3 i went with a different brand chain and rear sprocket. I can tell you, you would be happy with this quality value priced chain upgrade for your R3 and no a remap of your ECU wouldn’t be necessary.

The labor cost will depend on the shop and their rate. If you want it to last longer go with a 520 steel sprocket in the rear. Most of them are black in color and look great on the bike. - Van

I just had the RK kit installed on my R3. They charged me for one unit of labour. Aluminium sprockets don't last as long as steel but they will outlast most chains. So you will be replacing the lot together anyway.

Can someone please help. I just got done adjusting the chain slack and alignment on my R3. It was at 35m. Then when I put the back wheel back on the ground my chain tightened up to about 25m. Why is this happening?

  • @sportbiketrackgear

    @sportbiketrackgear

    2 жыл бұрын

If you have the bike on a rear stand there should not be a very big change in slack when the bike is on the stand or on the ground. Not sure how you were supporting the bike. What is happening is the swingarm angle is changing effectively making the swingarm longer which will pull on the chain. If you are concerned that the chain will be too tight you can check this by doing the following: 1) Raise the bike and support it by the rearsets 2) Remove the rear shock 3) Have someone raise the swingarm to the point is at it's longest point 4) Make sure the chain is not binding Hope this helps - Van
