The video overlooks Motion Pro instructions to "Push up on the slide, and when the chain is under tension, PUSH THE INDICATOR TUBE DOWN OVER THE BLACK RULER SHAFT UNTIL IT TOUCHES THE SLIDE. That is what 'zeros it out" so you can see how much slack exists when pull the tool down. This video makes no mention of the sliding black tube, which is essential to understanding the functioning of this tool. That sliding black tube has a bit of friction so it stays in place. it is possible to completely open the tool, move the sliding black tube all the way down to zero it out, then push up to move the sliding black tube where it needs to be in order to see the uppermost chain position. then you pull the tool down and can see the distance from top point to bottom point (slack). The example bike in this video has such a fat swingarm you can't really demonstrate it well, but you should at least comment on pushing the indicator tube down, as that is the whole concept of this tool. The guy approaches the swingarm with the sliding black tube already pushed up to the upper limit, which totally defeats the purpose of the tool. The chain was never really pushed to its upper limit, in order to see how far it moved down to get the slack measurement. To watch your video, every motorcycle in the world would be 'zero" when the tool is pushed up against the swingarm, and that is very wrong for my bike. there is a video by sport bike track gear that shows proper use of this tool, and the PDF download from motion pro.

Doing this the hard way. 🙂 All you have to do is 1. Put the tool on the chain. 2. Slide the other end (resting end) against the fork arm. 3. Zero the slider by pushing it all the way down. 4. Since the slider it's already set to zero push the slack out of the chain towards the arm and hold it. The slider will never move off 0. 5. Pull the chain down until the slack is out and that is your measurement.

Should slack be measured on or off the bike stand?

  • @adjbob56

You don't want the swingarm hanging down (like on center stand). so a side stand would be appropriate. Basically you want the swingarm as level as possible. If you set slack when it isn't level, then it tightens up when moves and could be too tight

It depends on what your manual says. For some bikes it should be measured on the central stand, for others it should be measured on the side stand.

What @@nestserau said is correct. Different bikes the manufacture suggest different methods. Check your owners manual. If you don't have it google for your original manual online.

Well considering you don't ride your bike in neutral, put it in gear but I am not positive it makes a difference

Yes, you should have the bike in Neutral. If the bike is in gear, it can create tight spots on the top or bottom of the chain (depending on side you measure) and result in an inaccurate measurement.~Chase

As Bob Harvey mentions below this demonstration doesn't show the full functionality of the tool. Bob recommends the vid by SportBike Track Gear, and that's better but the camera position is useless. Then I looked at two other videos, and it seems every single video covering this tool sucks in some way or other. Bottom line: watch multiple videos to see how this tool is used.

There are 2 scales for measuring chain slack and chain to swingarm clearance.
