R3 Performance Upgrade - HOW TO Install a Yoyodyne Clutch

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video, I am documenting the process of replacing the clutch on my 2018 Yamaha R3 with a Yoyodyne slipper clutch. I am also installing a new detent spring from Spears Racing.
YOYODYNE SLIPPER CLUTCH
The slipper clutch will reduce engine braking and consequently reduce over engine revving causing rear wheel bouncing. The slipper clutch allows you to focus on your riding instead of trying to control the bike.
DETENT SPRING
A stiffer and more robust detent spring is needed to improve shifting on the R3. It's no secret that false neutrals are a common occurrence on the R3. A stiffer detent spring is one easy way to help with this challenge.
The video documents all the steps and tools required to complete this project.

Great tutorial. I am installing a Suter Slipper clutch, but this really helped to understand some of the nuances involved with installing a slipper clutch.

Hey John, thank you so much for your comment. I am glad the video was helpful. I just got another R3 a few months ago and was debating between a Sutter vs. Yoyodyne and decided to go with Yoyodyne again. Let me know how you find the Sutter clutch. Curious to hear your feedback. Thanks again for watching and taking the time to share your feedback. 🙏 /Marco

good production. Question: why didn't you just disconnect the clutch cable? Would have save a zip-tie and easier to mount the cover.

I have to change my clutch bearings. My bike is purely for street. Do you think its worthwhile to upgrade to a slipper clutch at the same time?

Salut Jean-Philippe, There isn’t a huge advantage for the road, especially on small bikes like the R3. Having said that, if you are a “spirited” driver and quite often have to downshift a few gears in anticipation of a curve or obstacles on the road, a slipper clutch could be of great benefit. The slipper clutch also help a little bit by reducing the wear and tear, so you should factor this into your overall decision. I am a big fan of slipper clutches so my opinion might be slightly biased. 😎

@17:32 & @18:25 isn't that washer suppose to be at the rear of clutch boss? i mean I can't believe you missed out on even describing such a huge difference in change of position of the Washer- which makes it appears that it was some sort of boo boo . . edit: i understand that the washer @18:25 is the new one provided by Yoyodyne but still, when did you put the rear washer at the rear of clutch boss i still wonder.. Thanks for your contribution in providing some valuable upgrade update available for beloved YZF-R3 💛

Hey Sanju! Thank you for watching and for your very valuable feedback. You are totally right, I should have been clearer in my explanation and showed that I kept the original washer behind the boss before re-installing the Yoyodyne unit. That was my first video and I was trying to keep it relatively short and should not have edited this part out. Sorry if it caused any confusion. Yes, the washer @18:25 is the new one supplied by Yoyodyne. Let me know if you have more feedback or questions. Cheers, /Marco

@@landry555 Hi Marco . . thanks for describing the process further as the washer at the rear of the clutch Boss stays at the rear & probably it means that we would also need to use the new washer provided by Yoyodyne, the way it arrived within the clutch Boss.. hmm Two washers, please do correct me if i may need some rectification. Thanks again Budd . . Sanju . .

yup, you keep the large washer behind the boss in place, then the yoyodyne boss, then the cone shape washer that came with (inside) the Yoyodyne boss. Makes sense?
