Good video. I took my 1999 to a Mopar dealer at 117k miles, so presumably everything you said was done, and I bought four Yokohama tires then. Although I see some owners with extreme high miles, I'll probably retire this vehicle before 130k, it's at 121k now. It was my late brother's truck (original owner) and it's manual drive, so that's why I put $$$$ into it. He didn't drive crazy. I like stick shift, which is essentially obsolete.

I just serviced everyone of those things you mentioned in the past couple of months at home, my 1999 Dodge Dakota has way less rust and corrosion on the frame. The only thing that is really badly corroded is the exhaust and muffler, but everything else is really good condition compared to most Dodges in the rust belt, but that’s because my truck came from a state that has lower corrosion because the roads are not salted.

Just a note: There are very distinct mechanical differences between the 1997-2000 and the 2001-2004 Dakota. Differences in the fuel system, air intake, front axles, etc. Would you mind doing another video with a 2001-2004 model so you can show the differences in maintenance requirements.

No Mechanically they are almost identical. Which is why HAYNES manual cover those yrs in one book. Go to rock auto and cross reverence parts. You match v6 to v6, v8 to v8, 2x4 to 2x4, 4x4 to 4x4. 2w ABS to 2w ABS...etc etc...For those yrs. The part numbers are the same. As a matter of fact. 80$ of Durango parts match the dalota as well.

@@pup9et 03-04 is different for front brakes, single vs dual piston, the mounting on the spindle is way different. For those with a 97-02 and want to upgrade to the 03+ dual piston calipers, the rotors are also different thicknesses too compared to the 97-02 single piston calipers. The passenger side upper control arm for 03+ has a different bolt pattern than the 97-02 (including RT) they were perfectly mirrored (order 2 of the same side, rather than R and L) You can't do that to put 03+ spindles/brakes etc on a 97-02. As for the 545 auto, it has a different control module than the 45. They are 90% identical other than for the trim/year RT vs non 318/287 (Magnum 5.2 vs SOHC coil on plug 4.7 magnum) obvious systems etc to run different engines/trans, stuff like that. Most everything is standard Dodge stuff, plugs connectors etc but some wont be able to run heated power mirrors, detail stuff that people wont think about.

Dont forget to check your belt tension...These Dakotas were plagued with belt tensioner / idler pully issues. About 10yrs ago i had an 88 long box V6. 50k original miles. Bought it for a work truck for my painting co. 1 week after i got it belt tensioner crapped out. A month ago. I acquaintance of mine sold me her near mint 98 Dakota sport, 2x4. With a Custom color matched ARE cap. (For $1500 ) When she backed it in my driveway it had 79,995 original. A week after i put it on the road the tensioner started going...lol

With that said: GAS, ELECTRICAL, MECHANICAL are the steps but sounds to me as though it could be 2-3 things: fuel pump, vaccum issue, throttle body control. Just a guess. Try not to use mechanics in a can, they hardly ever work. Capieche?

In my experience, which is looking up worth about 4 hours of youtube videos, and my own expereince with my dak, it could be your Idle Air Control Valve (IAC). Its located on the back side of your throttle body. Clean it or replace it which ever works, I don't think you should have to pay over $50 for one anywhere. Check your crank position sensor, idk where it is but you can look it up. Replace if needed. Clean your throttle body. Worst case is a new ECM or bad ground wire. Check your air box too, as mine was filled to nearly the brim with a rat nest. The truck had been sitting in the elements for about 2 years so I think thats more of a fluke then anything

As I totally agree that 1A needs to be more specific because first off, my 2003 Dakota doesn't have an old style cap and rotor. Also the 4.7 wasn't available in 97; to be specific it first became available was in 99. As for copper plugs vs platinum it is true that platinum has higher resistance. With that said you can use Iridium without any problems; many people have done so with no problems. I suggest you go read people's experiences at Dodge Dakota's message boards.
