Your diagnostic method of locating a problem should be one taught in auto classes. You've proven in all of your videos how important it is to know how something works and what should and should not be expected.

I recently was air to a 2001 5.9 Durango, a relative gave me. Worn down and battered. At first, it had a real bad vibration that went away on right hand turns. That was natural to my ears since I know what and how bearings blow out. I bought both sides because that is the way I roll. Then the power steering pump and system started howling. We know what that means. I ordered a new pump and pressure lines. I appreciate men or women that have this in their blood. You, my video friend, are gifted and please believe me. I leave you with gladness in my heart as my new but old dodge / cadilac. Your instruction is clear and to the very point in the matter. I claim victory but not without sharing the credit to a true and honest, without the bullshit. Thank You my friend..

nice comment. your screen name made me remember a summer fishing trip to lake cumberland (TVA reservoir) when i cast a jitterbug over a log laying in the water and got a good sized largemouth bass that jumped several times before throwing the hook. nice to have fishing memories with your dad after he is gone. take care BJB

I too am a shop owner for the past 20 years, mainly diesel repairs and transmission overhauls, and with technology being the way it is, it's nice to be able to see a visual diagnostic. Thanks Eric! I used your "test and not guess" method on my old beater pickup and saved a bunch of money. Instead of throwing parts at it I tested it and paid $10.67 for the broken sensor and passed inspection. A cheap set of back probes is something I would have never bought without your insight. Thanks again!

I can tell the vintage of your videos by checking the condition of the bill on your Jeep cap. Lots of repair jobs have been seen by that cap. Oh and BTW you are not allergic to work. I can tell you love your job by the care you take in your repairs.

The dealership I bought my pickup from told me that I had to replace my transmission so glad I was sceptical and seen your video they was going to charge me for a transmission and make a gigantic profit but thanks to your video I was able to find the sensor and replaced it my truck is fine now thanks again

Hey Eric, thanks for another very useful video. It's very good that you take the time for diagnosis and it's even better that you share it with us! Greetings from Germany!

This is such a great because the expert diagnosis leads to a cheap and simple fix. Without reference to a known 'good' waveform or knowing what the amplitude range should be a low amplitude waveform from a failing sensor can lead you you in the wrong direction.. I've seen cam and crank sensors look good when cold but as the engine heats up the wave form steadily diminishes until the ECM can no longer effectively see it.

Nice quick diagnosis & repair. It'll definitely jerk you around when the speed sensor or line pressure sensors fail. Enjoying the videos!

love the channel was watching Eric the car guy and your channel popped up thanks for the great info just wanted to let you know their is a trick with these trucks that you don't need a scanner to get a code I have a 2001 durango and the set ups are pretty much the same if you have the key in ignition turn the car on but stop before it starts,do this 3 times leave it in the on position and it will give you all codes if you have lights on in the dash,this has been working great for me hope this helps someone with either a durango or Dakota in these years,great job again

Driveability problems with the gas light on, gotta love it!

Most of today's automatic transmission issues are the valve bodies and those solenoids/springs/check balls/valves. Some folks will take their brand new vehicle over to a transmission service center and have a "shift kit" installed to correct the OEM faults that come brand new with vehicles. One brand, TransGo, does the research and offers OEM similar shift patterns yet the valve bodies are getting upgrades so they do not degrade to the point that they damage the other parts of the trans. Even on used cars, a shift kit could be an answer to restore a transmission into a better state so they will last a longer life. This is obviously not the case in the video but could be considered something to do one short time in the future. I'd have to say, most shops or 80% of them, wouldn't have spent the time to put the meter on the sensor. One day, it will get them into trouble and they will have to scratch their heads awhile to get a correct diagnosis after making the wrong call.

i just got a 98 dodge dakota n i don't know shit about cars. my truck is shifting hard into 2nd. supervisor at work said he had the same problem, and it was just a sensor. he said it was the throttle position sensor, but now i'm pretty sure he meant this one. thanks a lot!

Finally, automatic transmission attached. Small but enough to start.

Love easy ones like that! :) I actually got one today believe it or not (usually nothing is easy around here, lol!) - the infamous Ford F-series overdrive wire chafe in the column deal. A '01 F-250. I found bare copper showing about a half inch from the shift lever - wore right through. That explained the complaint of random downshifts on the highway along with the 4k RPM engine speed. I just did some liquid e-tape, then wrapped the entire 3-wire bundle from the shifter to the plug in electrical tape. Fixed! Better than $100 for a whole new lever. Truck only has 55k on it, but it was a plow truck. She's pretty crusty underneath. Body ain't too bad though. Probably a million drive-to-reverse-to-drive shifts on that one. Also shot some 134a in her, and got the A/C working again. My neighbor is happy. :) Now to the REAL crusty '99 Powerstroke F-350 tomorrow. Had a hanging caliper, but pedal went to the floor as soon as it got here. Guaranteed brake line issue on this one. Frozen pins on the caliper I'd bet too. There are no rocker panels left, and the swiss-cheese bed was tossed for a flatbed. Oil pan has already been JB welded, and 2 years later it's seeping again - she's not long for this world, lol. Just one more season of plowing! Too bad too - that engine is fantastic. Just runs and runs.

It drove smooth after repair, but that cable needs to be clamped down. Another Great Video! 91 GM pickups had the magnet in the sensor exposed inside the trans. "There's your problem!" When it failed, it went to 2nd gear limp in mode. The replacement was the upgraded sensor with the magnet covered for both the input and output shaft speed sensors. I changed both. No more problem.

thorough , accurate, nice , never underestimate knowing what your doing....clearly a underestimated trade skill! Just because your comfortable with how stuff sequences does not mean it is not a skill..decade or so in the making ...definitely prevailing wage skills, which means not poor but not rich! Comfortable living and retirement in honor that is the scale for your skill level....

mrwcp63 had a first gen 1997 Dakota V8 4x4 for 15 years. On engine I only did a water pump and ac compressor, fuel pump, and catalytic converter. Other just normal services. Truck was delivered to dealership with a faulty battery and a missing engine oil cap, bought it one week into sales start. Gas mileage finally forced me to move on 8/11 city/hwy was best I could do. Sold in 2013 One issue that was never resolved. Random dying of engine while driving, had to put it in neutral and restart went fine with no further dying for months?

So I got the sensor replaced and it did not fix it, you said it was 95% chance that it was the sensor in the transmission. What could be the other casues?

looking for more video ideas? parts testing, (thermostat i a coffee maker) does it pop, sensor fail verification proper 100-200 k services, silicone window tracks, disinfect a hvac system, all rubber chassis and suspension components i bet after a year or 2 it would be hard for you to think of ideas for new videos. take care guy, thx for all the info, you helped bigtime

Very common on the 90s to 2001 1500s also. We change a ton of them. They have the screw in plastic sensors. The tips always seem to crack on them.

I just got my first truck 2006 Dodge Dakota SLT quad cab the closest thing I guess to what your reporting is when I give it throttle it seems like there is some jumping in the back wheel it's not burning out or nothing but sometimes I'm guessing there's a little shutter in the leaf springs the shocks back there might be worn out then again I could be traveling over the bad parts of the road without even knowing it as in no way does it feel the same as my old beat-up Subaru the issue I've been having is with the temp light for the transmission spent all night working on it pulled the oil pan but I messed up the new seal for the transmission filter just ordered two new sets doing a full fluid swap and filters as I'm thinking my temp light was a circulation issue and maybe a issue with the transmission oil being a little on the older side of course this truck transmission is a lot more complicated than my old little Subaru

I live in central MA, right near one of Ben Franklin's Post Road mile markers. Lots of homes built in the 1700's around here. Mine was built in 1850. My ol' man has a metal detector, and has found many lead minie balls, all white with oxidization, in parks and fields around central MA. Can't use the detector on state property without permission anymore - this was in the late 80's. Glad we went when we did. Lots of history around here that will probably never be found now. Too bad our state government has taken this state in 180° the opposite direction that our Founders did. :(

Wow, yeah must be a ton of stuff in the ground there. I've heard of guys finding minie balls with bite marks in them from field surgery (or amputations) after battle injuries. Amazing.

Sounds like you have a future 4.7 exhaust manifold/Y pipe job to do.. ;)

I think in 2000 they didn't use the 4.7 yet, they were still using the 318 (5.2) as the small V8 option, which I might add is probably one of the best motors dodge ever made and my conspiracy theory is they discontinued it because people could drive them until the frame rotted away, meaning they couldn't sell as many trucks. My only complaint about them was the 45RE transmission was prone to premature catastrophic failure... usually when you were 1,000 miles from home on a long weekend and had to be back for work in 24 hours (personal beef). But I loved that little Dak so much I bought the next gen 4.7L version, which ended its life by shattering the #8 wrist pin and putting a dent in the oil pan at 60,000 miles due to sludge plugging the ports in the back and starving it of oil, would have gladly just rebuilt that 45RE 3 or 4 times, just so I could have the much more reliable 318 back... I digress.

Do you sill get the code PO715 with the speed out sensor or what code would you see thanks. Jeff

I thought it was a truck at first,then after a couple seconds i thought it was maybe the heater blower motor (I had one making that sort of sound recently.)

The Caravan always had wonky sensors. Were prone to stick in low gear.

Hey, Mr. O. In your experience, do these sensors every slowly stop working? I have a Dakota, that often times has a harsh shift, but not always. No check engine lights, or codes though. So was wondering if maybe the sensor is "going" out. Or is it more typical that the sensor either works, or doesn't work at all?

I just had a rebuilt transmission put in my 06 Dodge Dakota slt 4x4 and when u come to a stop at the light and start to go the 1st time it shift hard do u think this could be whats causing it to shift hard?

I went and looked at a '95 Ram 1500 for sale, 120k, no rust, excellent shape. I scanned it and it showed a pending P0740. the owner was upfront on the phone, said he already had the trans dropped by the local shop and had the solenoid replaced the truck drove excellent at highway and city speed, no bucking or hard shifts do you think they just forgot to clear the code?
