You know what I loved this video. But all the fucking negative comments need to stop. I did not realize we had so many master Harley mechanics on KZread. A person could post a video on putting air in tires and some of you people would still find away to bitch.

Everyone talking crap about HD. It's confusing to me. Each person likes something different why be judgmental cause someone likes a Ducati and someone likes a Harley? It's like those guys that ride down the road and won't wave to a person riding a sport bike or vice versa. I don't care, I wave to everyone even the guy riding the moped. I like my HD because I like upgrading, modifying, changing things around. My bike has undergone 3 cosmetic changes in the past two years, and I'm beginning to consider another one. I wouldn't buy another brand just because it would take my hobby away. My bike has 40k miles on it and counting and runs like a dream. In two years I'll sell it and start the same process all over again.

i have the exact same bike with 24K miles and as a retired mechanic i wondered why it clicked. mine quits when it's good and warm. this thing is smooth as velvet compared to the old iron head engines. good video though and thanks.

I like the quick disconnects on the fuel lines. Might have to look into getting some of those myself. My 98 Heritage has the crimped clamps on it still. Mine also has started ticking intermittently as well but my heads are a little harder to remove in the frame than yours was. Less space...

Excellent video on a cheap, but labor intensive fix. I've had the same sound on my 2014 Dyna Super Glide Custom the last year. It has 32,000 miles on the engine. It goes away when the engine oil has warmed up. However, it is absent when I do an oil change. I just did the 3 hole oil change a couple days ago and it disappeared on start up. I usually change the oil every 3-5000 mile with 20-50 synthetic. I might start using the sound to indicate time for an oil change. When it starts to be a permanent sound, I'll definitely use your fix. At least on a Dyna, there is less work to do with parts removal. Thanks for the info.

Put a half quart of Lucas oil additive in each case...Premix it with the oils, before putting it in, so it will not be to thick for the oil pump to pick it up, I've done this since mine was new, and doesn't tick at all, plus I get 6-7 on an oil change...plus you can actually see it on the oil stick when its freshly new, when checking it, and I always have great oil pressure, during the interior time of each change...I have 45 thousand on mine and it performs great, with no ticking , even at the hottest or coldest times...plus I use Shell Rotella 50w oil...yes its diesel oil,,but it has great viscosity and last for much longer duration...I always buy my products from Walmart, it's the cheapest prices I can find

That ticking sound is just the heart beat of a Harley.

It's always a good idea to say something to the effect of "this fix *might* quiet your engine" instead of "will" make the tick go away. I've installed these things and sometimes they help a bit, other times they do nothing as there are many other reasons Harley motors can tick. Loose tappet to bore fit, worn or dirty tappets, aggressive aftermarket cam lobe profiles, loose valve guides, low oil pressure, etc.....it's a long list. The other thing is the rocker support plates are cast & not all exactly the same size where the Lockers get pressed in. I've had a few that I could not get the Lockers in no matter how I tried. So tight, they would fold before going all the way in.

Always appreciate people taking the time to do these diy videos. I would however invest in a good torque wrench. Cheers

My pipes are so loud that I don't hear any ticking. Also any ticking that you do hear should go away after your bike warms up. But let's be honest, the ticking is a Harley thing and I have never found it to bother me much. Kind of surprised that you didn't use a torque wrench to meet torque specs or lock tight bolts before putting em back in.

Great Video, I ve also noticed that, but 10 meters before coming to a stop you Rev it mid way smooth and then first gear and it comes out smooth👍

Hook your strap to the platform so it will go up/down with the jack. Won't loosen/tighten if you move it

Any time i get annoyed with something on my street glide, or my sportster 1200V... i go fire up my old ironhead. Annoyance forgotten.

Whilst 'Rocker lockers' are a fine idea - I use them - another sorce of the ticking noise is the rocker shafts themselves being a loose fit it the rocker carriers and/or the rockers being a loose fit on the shafts. If you go to the trouble of fitting rocker lockers, you might as well do the job properly and check everything.Rocker shafts/carriers and the bushes in the rocker arm all wear out especially with higher lift cams/heavier valve springs.

I agree for the amount of labor involved might as well spend $250 and replace rocker shafts and bolts. Specially for engines running higher lift camshafts and heavier valvespring pressures.

Good job, pull the plugs out last put them back first and use locktite and a torque wrench.

I like that your video shows just how easy it is to install the rocker lockers. Hopefully none of that dirt fell into the top of your engine while you had the valve covers off. (have you ever seen how tiny the oil passage is in a oil jet?) Rags are cheap man! A torque wrench and a service manual are your best friends when shadetree wrenching on your bike! Failure to properly and evenly torque rockers and valve covers can lead to a plethora of other mechanical problems and oil leaks. Knuckle value torque is NEVER "good enough" on dynamic components, nor on gasket sealed covers. Just sayin'

Shut up. Just stop it. I've been professionally trained by both tech school and two different manufacturers in my career. I use my elbow torque wrench daily. I use an impact to install valve covers. And I don't have come backs. I have customers that have followed me for years and 0 come backs. Eat me

Every twin cam I pull apart gets a set of them.

I did this fix when I had my Harley. Helped with the noise but still a lot there. I replaced the lifters next with some qualty after market lifters. That helped a lot. The rest of the engine still made a helluva racket. Many comments as to where is the torque wrench? I used one but in my opinion the factory specs are too high. I was afraid of stripping the bolts so I used my common sense as to the correct amount of torque.

My 103 twincam doesn't tick..I used Castrol 50w with a half quart of Lucas oil additive...I put half quart of Lucas in my engine, trans and primary...I always premix it with the oils, before adding it to the cases...I always have no less than 15lbs of oil pressure, even at its hottest moments at 100 degrees in heavy red light traffic

I have a garage full of pans, shovels and ironheads. All of them are ol skool choppers as well. If you didnt build it and dont wrench it your not a biker. Most of these newbies have no clue how to retard the ignition [magneto] and kickstart a real bike.

WOW! Tightening bolts into head without torque specs or wrench? It still "ticks" like a Harley. It probably always will.

I thought the same thing. I always use a reliable torque wrench. Over tighten one of those bolts, and you've got all kinds of trouble. Buy a torque wrench or borrow one, for a job like that. The same for the valve cover bolts.

Alot of times the tick comes from loose rockers on the shafts. This was very noticeable on Shovelheads. The fix was to use cam shims on the rockers, between the rocker n the rocker cover on the rocker shafts.

Nice job! Watched plenty of vids with them doing it on a bench but mine would be on the bike itself like this. Mine isn't terrible but at high RPM I hear plenty of noise which I thought was pinging but it could just be this. May hafta try them out.

When dealing with aluminum, you should REALLY use torque specs and not the spec known as FT lol. Too tight, you pull the threads out. Too loose, the whole top end will grenade. I hope you torqued them properly for your sake.

There is a pattern for torqueing down that too end and if not done there a good chance of working the heads

Maybe its by design that the tolerence is loose so that it doesnt wear that pin or rocker arm?....The bolt wearing is alot cheaper than those other hard parts... Just a thought...

That's why they design an item called shims, shimmed properly, it won't make a lot of noise. But u need basic mechanical skills and experience, this guy has neither.

Rocker Lockers did not do shit for my 2003 RK Top end noise. It is nothing more than valves clacking shut. The onl good thing the rl may do is help align the rocker assembly

I have the same bike, same issue. I know the ticking is normal and dont mess with it.

If you install these make sure to loosen all 4 rocker plate bolts and tighten them evenly! The shims also center the rocker plate!

Probably should have used a torque wrench on those rocker bolts.

I seriously need to do this on my 03 Duece. NOT a bike mechanic by any means though

Why doesn't Harley Davidson do these things at the factory! God knows we pay enough for their bikes! My 44k 2018 CVO is known for the oil scavenging problems. Again, why? I am planning on an aftermarket oil pump and cam plate replacement this year.

Do the valves make noise when they close, does that sound change with a change of the cams, it is after all, not a cast iron motor with water jackets, behind an insulated firewall, that motor is never going to be without mechanical noise.

wow...hit the nail on the head. just rebuilt my 2005 15 anniv fatboy, from the bottom end up...,S&S brand new crank, andrews 37g cams,, adjut pushrods, 8007 bullet aluminum fueling cam plate, hp fueling oil pump,brand new clutch assembly,new hp 1.4kw starter motor,and new jackshaft, indy just up graded double row IPB bearing kit, all new jims gaskets, and seals, whole bike. i get it back, loud chattering tick/chatter from primary, worse than before all the work. was going to my garage and look for my gun... no joke, this 2005 twin cam , has to be the loudest, damn bike i owned!!! driving me really nuts....! Bike sounded like a diesel cummings, warmed up right after the cam install. then it was sumping(dry, bike off on stand) the new hp fueling pump/camplate, sucks oil down with gravity, in a WEEK?? NORMAL?? but oil does returns full to the tank at start up, giving in a few mins, i checked my oil and its down to the TIP OF OIL STICK, ALL SUMPED TO BOTTOM CRANK CASE in a week!. nothing can be done, thats just the set up fueling has much larger passage holes in plate and pump. My indy, took camplate/oilpump all apart to check, for pinched orings, gaskets or seals, preventing oil to gravitate to the bottom crank in a week. all was good, as before he said. so im about done, with bike, now i just ride the balls off it, ignore all the noise!!!!! sorry so long, but good right!!! ty, peace!

Amazon is only place I found. Just search Rocker Lockers and you'll find em. About $15 if I remember correctly. I installed a set in my 2012 103 while I had it apart for a lower rocker box gasket leak.(put a set of reaper cams in as well). They do what they say they do. My motor (with loud pipes) has almost no top end noise at all and it just gives it an overall smoother feel. Would I do all that work just for the rocker lockers? No hell no But it you are taking the top end apart its just dumb to not install a set imo

I raise the volume on the stereo and the tick goes away.

I'd leave the plugs in till all parts are removed, you don't want some trapped road grit falling off in the hole

These are for a twin cam and evo motors. M8's are different.

Weird design when the rocker arms can touch (hit) the bolts. I would rather prevent the rocker arms from moving back and forth at the ends on the rocker tubes. And perhaps put roller bearings in the ends of the rocker tubes if it’s not overkill to the design/function!?.

Not sure would trust a ten dollar part on an expensive bike, why does the bike come with the tick, does it have something to due with heat expansion, good video.

So do you only need to replace two of those per cylinder???

Hell with that too much work I don't mind the noise can't really hear it anyways with loud pipes I like riding instead

2001 Road king 107.000 mi on the engine. Got it with24.000 do my own work never had the engine apart..If its not broke do not fit...

Suggestion: Crisscross the tiedowns.

If it wasn't designed this way, it wouldn't sound like a Harley, that's what we like.

Normally I ride it everyday and the bike does not sit more than a day or 2 but you are correct save the battery life

No, No, No, I do have some experience with this ( Al's Motorcycle Shop ) the rocker shaft do not move when engine is running, and those locks are a pain in the ass to remove. do not use them

One would wonder, why factory does not install them?
