5 things YOU need to tighten on your HARLEY

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

5 things you need to tighten on your Harley Davidson motorcycle! I see the same things loose all the time. I find loose bolts on Sportsters. Softail models seem to always have the same stuff loose. Those touring models seems to always want to have a shift lever fall right off. Even our beloved (RIP) Dyna model needs some extra love! I'll give you some info on every harley model in this video! Thanks for watching.

I just had the negative battery terminal bolt fall out on my softail 2 days ago. Drove me nuts figuring out what the problem was. I got this video as a suggestion just now and I'm laughing my butt off when you got to the part about battery terminals. Definitely going to go check my spokes, you sir have earned another subscriber. Great video and I like your laid back/chill attitude, cheers!

Good video....Over the years (roughly 45) of riding I had a simple approach to loose bolts/nut. #1 Remove bolt. #2 Clean both threads, not just with a rag but with a solvent like brake clean. #3 Apply Loctite. #4 Torque to proper spec if known. I have found that if you do this every time eventually nothing comes loose.

Great tip about checking the battery terminal bolts every 5k miles. My bike went totally dead on me in the middle of nowhere 4 years ago. Luckily, another Harley rider who had the same experience stopped. Sure enough, the negative terminal bolt was loose. I tightened it up and was on my way. Now I check em, and put blue threadlocker on the bolts if they come loose.

Thumbs up on the battery terminal tightening !!! I almost got caught on a road trip when my bike wouldn't start. Jumped it but when I turned it off it would not start again until I jumped it again. Thought I needed and new battery. After some trouble shooting I finally went to the simplest cause and found my terminals were loose. Now every month I recheck/tighten the terminals.

Hey John. Just wanted to stop by and say thanks. Your tip on the battery terminals just helped me. Had the battery out on a tender over the winter. I didn't tighten down the positive terminal enough and she loosened up on me. Intermittent contact, so the engine would die for less than a second, then come back. All based on vibrations from specific RPMs. Was driving me crazy and I thought I had a major issue. Thanks, man. All your videos have been a huge help and very entertaining, too.

Thanks for the tips, after watching this video I went out to the garage and checked my shifter linkage, felt tight. I had the sprocket bolts back out and get sheared off on the highway, it sounded like I was dropping parts all over the road. Safely got over to the shoulder of the road but tore a rotator cuff loading the bike on a trailer in the pouring rain. That bike seemed snake bit. Traded it in a couple of years later. Thanks for the great entertainment and insider info that helps me keep my ride safe and fun! As a suggestion for a future video I would like to see a segment devoted to fasteners. Thread pitch, nuts , ,bolts, washers, cartikeys, etc. Electrolysis, dis-similar metals, how and when to lubricate or seal. It's a world onto its own. Torque matters. Why some fasteners are replaced everytime they are taken apart? I'm guessing when a steel bolt is installed in an aluminum part the interface is a function of torque. Over torque could distort the aluminum threads rendering the part to galling. The shifter lever as an example. installed with the correct torque and the proper lock tight it would not come loose. As a side the lock tight will keep the moisture from deteriorating the steel to aluminum dissimilar metal. In the marine industry this is a major problem. Fasteners of different materials make moisture as the air heats and cools. Then the rust or as the case with aluminum it oxidized. When you go to take them apart the aluminum threads take some abuse. A new bolt isn't going to do much good. But if a barrier sealer like lock tight is used the too metals don't bond and if cleaned with a thread tap and a bronze brush after disassembly can be used again and again. Just a suggestion

Quit paying more money for a bike that's constantly trying to shake itself apart. Harley is all image. I just 'stumbled' on to your channel after watching a video about replacing cams and lifters on JP Cycles. I just bought a 2004 Sportster XL1200R, in January 2022, haven't rode it yet and put it in the Harley shop for a 5,000 mi. service with two new Michelins. I enjoyed your show so I did just what you asked, Subbed, left a thumbs up, and a tap on the bell. I hope to learn about Harleys, I haven't owned one since my first one in 1964, it was a 1941 Military bike, complete with a hand shift, suicide clutch, and a spark advance, lol, wish I would have kept it now. Thanks for sharing, my friend.

Best way to remove 50 to 70 pounds from a Harley when your riding is stop drinking 12 beers a day to wash down half a 16” fully loaded pizza! Lose the beer belly….your bike will go faster and you’ll live longer to enjoy it!

I'd ALMOST rather ride without a helmet than without gloves. I've bit pavement without gloves twice and regrowing skin on my palms for 6 weeks was super painful. Once in college, and once about 20 years later. And those were on bicycles (though in both cases at > 20 MPH).

Hi John, I have a 2015 heritage, just like the one you showed in this video. the question that I have is in regards of changing the regular lights to LED's, running lights center and all front ones. Front ones no problems at all ! all connected and works perfectly... even the turn lights changing from white to amber (yellow) so far all great. Now replaced the center no problems there as well, brake and running light awesome.. NOW! when I go to the turn signal founded that there is NOT an 1157 socket... it is only one filament light! that means only the turn light. so I jumped a wire for running light and also ran a ground wire all the way so now having 3 wires in each light holder. I double check without connecting the LED's and all looked perfect. Making the LED outer ring for running lights and the inner core (red as well) for the turn signal, but it doesn't work, don't know what it is but When I turn the bike the running lights all leds! I have already changed the LEDs twice and it is the same problem. Any ideas?

Hey, Schroeder...Asians and Europeans don’t ride Harleys...neither do they know how to work on them OR their own “metric” bike. How would they go about even MAKING a video on bike repairs? Tell ya what...I’ll ride my Harley in my lane, you and the metrics can have the other(s). Deal? The far right one’s not for ridin in, you do know this, right? That one is fer cigarette butts, empties like beer cans, plastic water bottles and Starbucks cups, silt etc. Oh yeah, the white lines, whether solid OR dotted, are not lanes either. I realize this is a gray area for some of you guys or maybe you’re just confused or, well I was gonna say STUPID, but my six year old niece just told me it’s not a nice word and I shouldn’t use it in this context. Always ride, AND read, BETWEEN the lines! Remember...safety first. I swear...I still think stupidity’s in there somewhere??? Hear how it rolls right off the tongue. And/or the road when you’re not clear on this stuff. Maybe THAT could be the first video the metrics can produce. Whaddaya think?

Uncle Timmy funny I can tear my bike down and split cases and get it back together right (metric) but I don't have to. I don't have to worry about 5 things (more like the whole bike) to tighten. Also metric bikes don't spend all their time in the shop on the back of a trailer or broke down yet again under the overpass. Just because you dress like a gay pirate and ride a pile of garbage don't hate on a better and more reasonably priced bike. If you want to turn gas into noise without the pesky side effect of horsepower get ya a harley

I found it funny that you mentioned the battery terminals. I just spent about 3 hours total time trying to figure out why my 03 indian wouldn't turn over one day when it was fine the day before. I even tried jumping with my car like you had showed when that didn't work I got pissed and jerked the battery around a little. All of a sudden I had power to the bike. When I pressed the starter I noticed the positive battery bolt glowing red. Then it dawned on me that I probably had loose cables. I tightened them up and sure enough that was the issue. Thanks for tips and keep posting. Even though I don't ride a harley they are very entertaining.

Great informative video. Thanks from a new subscriber. Just one thing about the transmission shift lever on the touring models. I own a 2012 Road King and I had the lever fall off on a road trip cross country. I live in Maine and the lever fell off in Beatty, Nevada. I actually was able to put it back on while on the side of the road. With out the proper tools though I didn't get it tight enough and It fell off again outside Jamestown, Ca. The Harley dealer in Jamestown fixed it for me. Again without pulling the primary. This time though the mechanic changed out the pinch bolt. It seems that Harley Davidson uses a completely threaded bolt and the threads get buggered up just enough to let the lever become loose and it can slip off the shaft. The answer is to use a long shouldered replacement bolt. I finished my trip back across country and the lever is still tight. That was two years ago and a lot of miles. BUT, I check it regularly now.
