Thank you for you free video I am new to charcoal drawing after doing watercolour. At the moment I can’t afford the paper that is needed for watercolour so I thought I would try charcoal drawing after a friend introduced me to it. I love your waves and it has made me want to give it ago.

With pastels there's no better blending tool than your finger. However that sometimes won't do so you'll have to use brushes, blending stumps and soft tools.

This is awesome! Thank you. I tried charcoal about 5 years ago and I didn't like it because it was so messy, but I think I'm going to try it again because I love the look of it. I use graphite now and I find it to be very slow and it's hard to get as dark as charcoal without getting that shine. (I bought some matte pencils recently, which aren't bad). I like how charcoal is so flexible where you can keep going back and forth between adding value and highlights..

A wonderful tutorial. I was happy for the repetition of the same basic process over and over, just for the practice in something closer to real time. I got better results than I expected. I have a question, if it's not too simple or obvious to trouble answering. (I'm a real beginner.). You mentioned that you could go back some day and work this tree study up into a full piece. I am looking at the small-scale and detailed work in the interior of the tree around the branches, and wondering how you would do the sky inside there without troubling the details already done. I would be afraid to use solvent around all that fine branch work, for example. Would that not already be laid down in a full picture, before the tree? Thanks. I love watching and listening to you working.

Beautiful, and beyond just an accurate picture of the animal. The rabbit's expression is real and alive, and the lighting is so delicate and adds everything to the alert animal face and how he seems to be thinking. Does it happen with this medium that it just gets too messy to control? You work so cleanly with charcoal; I admire this, but I don't think I could do it.

sorry I am late to the show just wanted to congratulate you for uploading another amazing video I was following along thinking you were nuts but afterwards after finishing it turned out amazing. The only idea for future videos is maybe a series on trumpet vines or flowers that are not commonly drawn I do draw a lot of unusual flower drawings that quite a few artists shy away from because maybe the difficulty level or the fear factor which is what I felt the first time drawing a hydrangea in bloom.

I am more a pencil man myself because of my inability to safely store the charcoal drawings where the charcoal doesn't get smudged or lifted by page protectors do you have any suggestions on the storing or displaying without the use of framing each one?
