I love tinkering and you can follow me on my journey to make perfect smart home on KZread BeardedTinker channel!
To start - I must stress out that I am NOT a tech guy, I just love to tinker in my spare time with minimal investment and maximum fun.
Oh, yeah, I have no shed, basement, lab or even small corner where I can tinker, so this make's it even more fun but a bit challenging too.
Smart Home, Home automation, DIY sensors, 3D printing, ...You can find all this here!

Useful for me - I have a cheap eBay-sourced desk fan with a manual rocker switch, so it will come on when power is applied if the switch is in the correct state. I suspect the cheaper the gadget, the less likely it is to have a software switch, and the more useful this might be.
YES FINALLY. Have been looking for this for a few years now. people with a wall-panel will love this. since it helps those with shallow socket-boxes, make their dashboard/wallpanel more smart
That's great use case...
great vid, really liked how you analysed the use cases.
Glad you liked it! Thank you!!!
do they have 16mm version ?
I haven't see it yet.
Fake. SwitchBot under no load as there’s no lock turning.
Thank you sir.
So nice of you Ron, thank you!!
Hero! That was well explained. Made it so easy for me.
Glad it was useful! Thank you for the comment!!!
I use a wifi one to add on off control to a monitor light powered viua the USB ports on the back of my monitor and its great...I might buy a zigbee one next time if I need one as its local whereareas thwe wifi needs to be 'made' local using TuyaLocal
Yes, that's why I always prefer Zigbee over WiFi - no need to mess with firmware or Tuya local for support in HA.
@@BeardedTinker problem is like many of us, if zugbee is behing handled by HASS itself via its associated hub, when HA goes down (on the rare occasion,) then you have no control at all..as leaast with wifi there is a fallback
Hi! Are these European?? I saw the website with inches?
They do sell in EU, for example there is Amazon.de store from them. Also while Yoolax web site has inches, again, they deliver to EU.
I have a few of these, but it's the WiFi version. and all I did was add to the HA Sonoff Integration.. Good for on/off's
eWeLink AddOn?
👍🏻
I followed your guide and all is starting very well. BUT - now i have under MQTT instead 92 devices only the five devices from the new instance...I've two seperate config folders, all is as describe... What is the problem? (Normal installation via HA, without Docker). When i uninstall the second instance my other devices comes back....
Is the antenna for wifi or zigbee? Therefore, if I have it setup in LAN mode, do I need to have the antenna fitted?
That's an antenna for ZigBee and it's needed for it.
Do you have recomendation for motors for EU window inbuilt PVC roletes (shades)? Those are heavier, is same motor strong enough?
I am still struggling to get this to work. The only difference between my config and yours, that I can see is that your server line reads - server: mqtt://192.168.1.35:1883 but mine reads - server: mqtt://core-mosquitto:1883 Where did you get the IP address for your mqtt server from?
Thanks a lot for the tutorial and i successfully integrated switch bot curtain in HA.
Interesting video! I think I would buy the SMlight router. But I would love to see a video about if and how it is possible to migrate an existing zigbee2mqtt network based on Sonoff Zigbee dongle-P to the SLZB-06.
Can I buy it in Europe?
Thery are not known too make the best quality stuff 😂
On those humidifiers, just add a Switchbot and you can turn it on and off :) I initilly struggled finding a use case for these Micro USB Adaptor, but now I am thinking for charging control, for small USB devices and the like it could be quite handy and cheaper than purchasing smart sockets for all of those sort of devices. Also could be useful for devices that run off external battery packs.
A traditional zigbee plug switch does already cut off internal cameras when I am home and is obviously a zigbee router... I don't really see the purpose for this device but some could so...
Just what I was thinking. It would be useful in multi-charging devices, but it just don't fit...
Yes, was really struggling to see purpose. Dumb LED Aquarium or similar light, maybe. I only have one possible case for it - if anyone is using Elgato Mini light that's battery powered. To turn on recharging when battery is let's say 20% and disconnect when 100%.
Yeah, It covered for me 2 USB C ports on multicharger + one where is was plugged...
One advantage of this device is that it draws less power than bigger zigbee power plugs that have larger relays (they can switch much more than just 36w)
You know what is cool. A zigbee device that can turn on and off a POE for cameras. So I can physically cut off a camera if I don’t want it to record.
Great video and excellent explanations. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks B.T.
Any time Ron, thanks for watching!!!
They look good. A little noisy in operation I thought. I think if you were trying to do a gentle wakeup by slowly opening them in the morning, you might get woken up by the noise quicker than the change in light?
Yes, they are a bit noisy. Not that bad, but if it's completely silent, you hear them. BUT - on thing I haven't played with it speed. There is option to change speed on them. And making them go slower would produce less noise.
its possible to use the smlight slzb-06m for both zigbee and matter over threads with home assistant?
Multiprotocol support? Hmm - I wouldn't recommend it. That is being deprecated due to various issues of running both standards on same device and radio is splitting air time for each of the protocols.
@@BeardedTinker Thanks!! i will use the 06m just for zigbee for the moment.
This appeared to work for me. Each of my two instances of Z2M were able to pair with devices but when I go to Settings-Devices & Services - MQTT all I see is the two zigbee2mqtt bridges (one for each coordinator). I have spent all weekend trying to solve it and even wiped my entire homeassistant set up and started fresh but get the same problem. I am using SMLight SLZB-06M coordinators. Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?
Did you create also separate path or you only have one zigbee2mqtt folder? You can check written guide for SLZB06M for multiple instances here: smlight.tech/manual/slzb-06/guide/multiple-adapters-setup/
@@BeardedTinker I created separate paths. I will check the written guide. Thanks
@@BeardedTinker As far as I can tell, I have set up everything right. I can see the connected devices in z2m but mqtt is just not getting the information. So frustrating
Nothing pops on my mind currently.
Just in case it is helpful for others who watch this video. I have now been able to get two instances of z2m working by attaching my old Sonoff USB coordinator instead of one of the ZLSB-06M's. I now notice that you have one USB coordinator and one Ethernet coordinator in your video so maybe the problem is that z2m cannot handle multiple ethernet coordinators?
Hey Andrej! Did you update the firmware on your Zigbee coordinator for multipan (Zigbee and Thread) Matter support or did you set up a separate coordinator solely for Thread (no Zigbee)? I ordered the SMLight SLZB-06 and was planning to repurpose (reflash) a Sonoff Dongle E as a Thread border router for Home Assistant. Once I receive the SLZB-06, I plan to set it up in Zigbee2mqtt while leaving my Skyconnect connected to ZHA, temporarily running both simultaneously to migrate everything slowly from ZHA over to Z2M. Do you think this migration plan running ZHA and Z2M simultaneously is a good idea? I've got 57 devices to migrate.
It's separate one. Multithread is being deprecated so decided to use SLZB-06 for future Thread support. Still not sure what I'll do for main one in future, but that's problem for another day. You should be OK with the plan. They should be able to coexist without an issue. You could also convert Skyconnect for Thread support, that's also an option.
Hi, I just make my first experience with a Raspberry Pi and home assistant core. Ion one week I destroyed my os already 2 time. In the meantime, I work with sc card images. But of course, a full backup and restore here takes to long. Unfortunately nothing has changed in two years. There is no automated way to restore a backup in HA Core! So my question is how to restore the HA core settings from a Backup I have made. You said you can import them. But how? Do I just have to cope and paste the backup folder e.g. via Windwos Samba access ? What is the exact target folder on PI? Thanks George
That's correct! Due to how core works and what Supervisor does, there is no way to do restore on core. In HA OS, Supervisor takes that process over and since Core doesn't have supervisor it's impossible to implement this. Yes. You unpack the file inside configuration folder and that is it (where YAML files are located).
Hello, I think my board is stuck in the boot sequence, all I'm getting is this on loop: rst:0x10 (RTCWDT_RTC_RESET),boot:0x13 (SPI_FAST_FLASH_BOOT) configsip: 0, SPIWP:0xee clk_drv:0x00,q_drv:0x00,d_drv:0x00,cs0_drv:0x00,hd_drv:0x00,wp_drv:0x00 mode:DIO, clock div:2 load:0x3fff0030,len:1184 load:0x40078000,len:13232 load:0x40080400,len:3028 entry 0x400805e4 ets Jul 29 2019 12:21:46 And not the actual values, just this on repeat when I monitor it. Any ideas why ?
Is it over USB cable? If yes, this looks like boot-loop. One of the reasons could be power-supply issue. I'm currently in process of deprecating HiGrow boards and searching for more out of box experience.
Brilliant timing. My morning voice announcement always says "time to wake up" and i was wondering if there was a way to get it to randomly say different things instead and now here's your video 😂
Nice - glad I timed it right ;)

Having watched Home Alone as a child, I use randomness in a template to vary the time my house lights come on in the evenings and turn off at night when I'm away on vacation.
There is nice integration for that called Presence Simulation. It uses your actually device history to simulate your presence.
I think Jeff at SlackerLabs has some good random use in his Halloween automations. He sends random spooky sounds to random chromecast devices around the house. I want to use this to make random effects happen as a motion sensor sees kids come to the door then have a random cool-down period so that the same effects aren't triggered until after the group that triggered it has left. The effects can be turning on specific lights to highlight certain scenes, turning on the zombie-in-a-box, turning off lights and turning the valve on an ankle blaster, making creepy sounds.
That's great idea!!! Would love to see finished code!
Just a random chance I found this!! Not really, I'm subscribed. Thanks for the creative solutions.
Thanks for the sub and for watching the video!!!
Do you use Node-RED at all? I am just looking how much easier some things, like random, are there. I have started with HA automation long time ago, then switched to Node-RED. Tried to come back to HA automation but no :D
Deleted it few years back - for me using NR defeats the purpose of HA., but yes, a lot of things can be done differently and/or easier there.

That's awesome! Makes things much more interesting that having one single sentence saying "Time for school"... And Chime is really great integration, adds that little touch to make it better than standard TTS.
@BeardedTinker i have one random announcement for "time to eat," and depending on the hour of the day, it announces either messages for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Also set volume depending on time.
This is my totally random comment.
This is so random...
Hi, nice video but do you know how to solve my issue, I don't find where i can change the update time (scan interval) of my sensors (cpu temp or usage disk or memory usage...) can you help me ?
Previously, when you were able to add them via YAML, you could have used scan_interval. Now, you can use build int option - check this documentation. I haven't tried, but this should work: www.home-assistant.io/common-tasks/general/#defining-a-custom-polling-interval
Awesome!!! Do you think it would be possible to create a button in HK that could launch a specific Apple TV Remote? It would be awesome if you could have a button in every room in HK for the Atv remote for that room. Thank you for your time developing for the community!
Sadly shipping is over $300US.
No local warehouse? 300$ is a "bit" too much!!!! 🤦♂️
@@BeardedTinker I'm New Zealand so it had to come from China.
Ouch... That's so bad...
Thanks for this very good explaination. I'm using docker and multiple SMLIGHT SLZB-06 with Zigbee2MQTT instances : this permit to manage all the floors with only one HA instance !
Nice! That's the way!
regarding the very big size of the printer, i believe this is so that it holds heat much better to save energy, if it was thinner it would lose more heat to its enviroment and use more power to hold the right chamber temp
My thoughts exactly, but it also depends on the material of the case. Though, I think it's still loosing a lot of heat through lid. That's the only reason I see for such big case!
What is the other remote that is on your dashboard in the middle? Was that one also done with Firemote or another remote setup?
That's LG TV remote (LG has excellent HA integration) - done it years ago, probably one of my first integrations in HA. It's using LG webOS integration.
This dongle is also affected by the multipan firmware not being developed anymore right? So it can only do zigbee or matter but not both at the same time
Short answer - yes, unfortunately.
Pre-ordered trough your affialiate link. I can live with the current flaws (which are not for me), but the big plus for replacing my old ender 3 is the heated chamber. My printer is in the basement and it struggle in winter when temps are around 16/17°C even with PLA. Added speed will be a bonus.
Thank you very much! I'm also considering to move it to basement - it's currently outside and printing on outside temps ranging from 0 to 28 was not an issue so far - included heater makes it much easier for those cases. Remembering how I had to make cardboard box around my Ender 3 to print some parts and protect from draught
My camera is much better than yours - I'd speak with QIDI support if I were you.
Will definitely do so! Thanks for feedback!!! BTW how are you happy with it?
Would you recommend a modulating controller to go with this setup?
Yes (if we are talking about one hooked up to boiler/heater?). I have that setup. And BTW (spoiler) - not sure when but looks like they'll be releasing one later this year, probably Q3/Q4.
@@BeardedTinker thank you.
