Amazing video, guys! really! As a Brazilian-Portuguese who has lived in both countries, I agree with everything you said. At the end of the day, I decided to live in Portugal and as a realtor I genuinely help those who want to make the same decision and get their houses or businesses here. Interestingly, I also lived in Brazil and in the US - for a short period of time - and weighing it all I still choose Portugal, according to my life priorities such as safety, quality of life, cuisine, some infrastructure and decent and affordable health care. Anyway, sending my greetings from Ericeira/Lisbon, you guys are great! Helena Badr
I love to hate Spain! But only in brotherly rivalry, I wouldn't wish to be neighbour to any other country, after our own nationalities we're Iberians first.
She's having the time of her life, living in a safe, cohesive, and stable country, with fresh and varied food, where people are real and down to earth. The only thing she might be struggling with is perhaps not hearing about school shootings almost every year, not hearing about a failed coup by rednecks, polarised politics and a lot of vitriolic, getting bankrupted if someone has a serious disease...gosh, she must be struggling a lot 😆
I love the Medical rankings as that should be critical for anyone looking at retiring in Portugal
Thanks for the love. - Josh & Kalie
Great Talk! Glad to see so many expats enjoying our Country and adding to its multiculturalism!
Thank you. Thanks for the welcome. - Josh & Kalie
I am having a hard time of deciding between Spain, Portugal, and Italy
All fun choices and difference. All the best! - Josh & Kalie
I Like spain ,great cities, but the food Portugal by far ...BUT SO FAR. That is not even fair....i have 17 countries in my life...in europe portugal is the best ...
Thanks for sharing, Ana. - Josh & Kalie
Ruined by the chinese :) just like Canada and Australia. They all sold themselves out to communists :) congrats 👍🏻 should have been smarter
Thank you for thisss❤
You're welcome 😊
Trader Joe's is a German supermarket, in Europe, it's known as Aldi's.
Trader Joe's is an American supermarket that was sold to Aldi in the 70s. The Aldi in North American is really different than to Trader Joe's. Aldi in Europe does have some of the products that Trader Joe's has as the companies have a connect. Thanks for writing. - Josh & Kalie
@@ExpatsEverywhere Trader Joe's has been Aldi for the last 45 years so it's stocked with pretty much the same merchandise (with perhaps a few local exceptions) as Aldi's in Germany, I doubt if there is anything from the "Trader Joe's" era left now. I have been to Aldi's in Germany and the UK and they are virtually the same store, like McDonalds, if you have been to one you have been to them all.
Catching up with videos, finally. I need to get serious about this. Will look for the financial discussion video. Thanks for this.
Thanks for catching up. That video should have been at the end of this one. Also, John is back on the channel this weekend discussing Portugal v Spain from a financial perspective. - Josh & Kalie
hey guys, did you move to Braga? I see quite a lot of content from there when you talk about Portugal in this video
If you want a real comparison you should live some years in north, Levante coast and Andalucia at least for to have minimun knowledge about Spain. You can't only living in Madrid. Also Canary and Balear Islands.
8:30 That's what I tell people! I've travelled enough to have been in countries where it snows. I have toured cities during blizzards. The only foreigners that I've met that aren't surprised by the COLD weather are the Brits. Winters in Portugal are cold and wet. Stop saying Portugal can't be that cold because it rarely snows.
I am Portuguese and i know Spain well. I agree completely with everything u said, and that was some how a surprise cause i though my evalution would be biased. As for me, despite the problems with our politicians (thou this goes for most of the world), i wouldnt change Portugal for Spain, i am greatful to be Portuguese.
Disappointed. Whhat a change in the last couple years. Doesn't seem worth it. Sad
Well done! This is very helpful for someone new to Lisbon.
An American soldier deserted to Russia via South Korea, China and Vladivostok. Even soldiers have the same dream. :)
*North Korea
yeah i think you should move to Spain, thank god, please go, you can always come here for brief visit as a tourist :)
brazil = 3rd world country, the mentioning of 'not as safe' is laughable when moving to another country you should make at least an effort to learn their language, they dont have to adapt to you nor speak english to you, you are the one who have to adapt to their country.
Re: The "Former Spanish Colony Clause"... What's the policy with respect to individuals who are direct descendants of Puerto Ricans? As you may be aware, Spain ceded the colony of Puerto Rico to The United States in 1898. Nineteen years later, in 1917, Puerto Ricans were finally "granted" U.S. Citizenship. With a name like Pedro Aguayo, obviously my paternal roots originate in Spain. However, my more immediate ancestors (from both parents to several generations prior to) were born and raised in Puerto Rico. Ironically, I'm almost certain that all eight of my great-grandparents were born in Puerto Rico in the 19th Century as Spanish subjects. Here I am in the 21st Century trying to re-capture it. Thank you for the very informative video and if anyone can provide some info regarding Puerto Rican descendants (with respect to the 2-year "Short Cut"), it would be greatly appreciated.
We chose Spain because of language, the Mediterranean climate, better infrastructure, and ease of travel to the rest of Europe.
GL trying to find a place to live in portugal as a single.... 90% of your paycheck go to home rent only loool... fk portugal and im portuguese. most of young adults need to live with their parents or in their cars if they have 1.
Don't invest in real state in spaim
I have a really nice, just getting renovated 2 bedroom flat to rent. Good points: Safe area in a friendly neighbourhood Reliable public transportation Loads of shops, cafes, supermarkets and banks within walking distance. Bad points Limited parking Town Pinhal Novo, just by the fire brigade station £850pcm
Don’t go to Evora if you want to relax.. It is a sleepy town, bordering boring. I regret spending more than 1 day there.
Really amazing videos to watch, very thorough and enjoyable too,,, variety is one area you guys are good at,, enjoy ✌️🇰🇪❤️🙏
Thanks 👍
A great South African. Didn't dis SA at all! Nice bud!
Poor girl. I almost cried with those horrific experiences. Hope you know the tickep back is cheap. Surviving Portugal 😂😂😂. Take a walk in New Orleans.
Well, I lived 6 years in the US with a perspective of being my permanent home and I can also tell it wasn't easy. Weather was way different - too cold during Winter, too hot during Summer; celebrations and holidays were different, scale was different - even in food; there were a few foods I was familiar with, but tasted different in the US (sugar is substituted by corn fructose); beer was way more expensive; cars had automatic shift; people only spoke English; social interactions were way different, etc... Still, there's good people everywhere and despite the differences I made a lot of friends, who I had to leave behind when I got back... but they still live inside me and thankfully to modern technologies we keep connected as best as possible.
I agree with the cold. Homes in the US are better prepared for the cold winters than ours. But we never have extreme cold as in some States in the US. Anyway, I have to agree with this one. There are good things and bad things everywhere. I always felt safe in the US, but I had some edge situations where I felt I would be in trouble and life threatening. Something I never felt in Portugal. Anyway, the thing is if you have the will to integrate and learn about the culture and meet the local people, you get used to. Portuguese are friendly in general and even not speaking the language they try to help you. I felt the same in the US, but maybe I was lucky with the people I met. Depending where you are from in the US, there's some areas where you have a melting pot of different languages, so you have to expect some broken English and will to communicate with you. It's all good in the end. Home is where your heart is.
Thanks for sharing your experiences the other way around. It sounds like you're making it! - Josh & Kalie
I want to make aliyah so bad!
We pay $0 income tax in the US. In Portugal we pay 3160. In 6 years we'll pay double that. Houses are as much in the US, and gasoline is 4 times more here. Tolls are high. The US has few tolls. The private health insurance is 323 a month. In the US it's 348. So it's close.
Thanks for sharing. - Josh & Kalie
Why not get the metro into Porto from the airport?
Speed, convenience and cost. - Josh & Kalie
08:45 She really gets it... when people say cold is cold usually they don't experience much more than their city... There are different types... humidity has a lot to do with it.
The Ocupas are a big downside in Spain 🥹 Thanks for the Video! 🧡
You're welcome. Thanks for watching. - Josh & Kalie
Thank you for loving and living here 🇵🇹
Thank you too! We appreciate the welcome. - Josh & Kalie
Always super crowded what's actually called a tram. Worst underground experience
Huh?
Helpful video! I would love to create a chart showing the benefits of a Golden Visa vs establishing residency (via passive income or digital nomad visas). Seems like the biggest differences are time required in country and ability the to work (in the country of residence)?
Certainly the time in country is a thing, Kathy. It seems like the people we know that have done it have all been motivated by being able to do it now while they can't make the move permanently yet and still have their years counted vs taking early retirement and moving straightaway. So these people are planning to retire in 3-10 years and they're just going ahead and banking the necessary years (at least in Portugal's case). - Josh
You forgot Puerto Rico 🇵🇷. They are also part of the list for the eligible for 2 years to citizenship.
Yes, you're right! It wasn't on the list we pulled and we're not sure why but it's certainly on other lists and we missed it. - Josh & Kalie
this is my first time watching a video on living somewhere other than the u.s...i'm looking for a video that interviews people who are NOT rich to begin with. does this exist? yes, i am interested in the property buying portion--eventually i guess, but i really did get the impression that this lady is out of my league.
We have a ton of videos of people from all economic walks of life that are pepped across our channel most of them come from English speaking countries because our core audience is English speak. - Josh & Kalie
@@ExpatsEverywhere okie dokie
Thank you for this extremely helpful clarity on Pvt and Public health care system, well done sir.!
Thank you, Ana. - Josh & Kalie
What is "culture shock"? !!! For this lady? We are not amercicans for sure, but...
Interesting how every instruction on how to use the Metro says it's simple when it's a convoluted mess. Also, Whyareyoutalkingsofast??
The convoluted mess certainly is centered around the zones. It's so different than most places with metros. We don't like it but it'll likely not be fixed for a long time. The main thing is that for trips around the city center a z2 should be fine. z3 if you're trying to go from Porto city center to Matosinhos and z6 if you're going to the airport. - Josh & Kalie
15 months processing for Portugal GV. Definitely not. 30 months if you are lucky. December 2021 applicants are still being processed.
Portugal doesn't need to provide Golden visa anymore. Is a country full of foreigners that decided to call Portugal their new home. Reasons are obvious comparing to Spain. Saying that Spain's golden vide will crush Portugal is a joke. Go to Spain please! Loads of foreigners are negatively impacting locals lives. Leave Portugal and its wonders alone.
Great info, Josh!
Glad you think so! - Josh
Love to see a video like this based on retirement programs
Same
Good idea, we'll try to sort that out. We've been talking to John from Green Ocean Global about it from a financial planning perspective as he's doing his homework on the topic. - Josh
@@ExpatsEverywhere brilliant thank you . Looking to retire to portugal hopefully , if my pension won’t cover it then it may have to be Belize due to the lack of financial restrictions
lol, that's their dream for the past 881 years old...and they haven't managed yet....they are persistent but they still have to drink a lot of milk
for any foreigner, you can start acclimatizing either in Lisbon or Porto, but then move to a smaller place, they are much better
