The Important Things to Know About This Charming Coastal Town 🇵🇹

For those who are interested in living in Portugal but don't want the big city life, could this smaller city work for you? Póvoa de Varzim might be known as a beach town or city in the north of Portugal but is there more than just the beach or are there so many tourists in the summer that it's not pleasant? With their small downtown and car culture, you might find this city gives you what you're looking for. It's connected to Porto by the metro but is a city of its own. Josh and Kalie from ExpatsEverywhere talk about cost of living, the people, food, and more. Could you live in Póvoa de Varzim?
We create city guides for all around Portugal so be sure to check our channel for more! Here's an example of a playlist to get you started: • Great Cities to Explor...

LOL as I watched you strolling near the beach, I thought "Hmmmm....I wonder how they'd compare it to Matosinhos?" We only spent an afternoon walking around after we finished the tour of the Pinhais cannery, but with those newer/taller buildings near the beach and waterfront restaurants, with older neighborhoods not that far away, it seemed perhaps that Póvoa de Varzim would be an alternative that is cheaper, if the downtown Porto nightlife isn't important. Google Maps shows 28 minutes on the Metro from Bolhão to Matosinhos Sul versus 56 minutes from Bolhão to the end of the red line in Póvoa de Varzim. We live in metro Chicago, and even if we lived next door to a train station, it would take an hour or more to get downtown, and we're definitely still in the thick of suburbia. So an hour on the metro wouldn't bother me at all!

Please Kaylee and Josh, please take note of accents on the words. , especially if you do a while vídeo on Póvoa de Varzim. The accent is on the first ó in Póvoa - so it is pronounced the same as "po" in "pot" in English.

Please please please may I ask a question? We're hoping to move to Portugal (possibly Madeira or somewhere near Porto), but we have two cats! My husband says it will be absolutely impossible to find a rental property that allows pets, unless it's mega expensive or charge a lot on top for the pets. What is your experience if you have any or noticed anything? I'm desperately wanting to keep my cats 😭 (both have passports, vaccinations, were from EU). Thank you ❤

I came over with 2 dogs and a cat. It was no problem for us. It'll depend on each landlord. It might take a little longer to find a rental but it's definitely possible. In my experience, landlords have a greater aversion to dogs than cats. Also, our rental agent told us that legally landlords cannot reject pets in Portugal, but of course they can choose other tenants over you. Even still, I think you'll find something with a little patience. We didn't have to pay any extra fees. Good luck!

@@ExpatsEverywhere Thanks. I don't use autoplay (I think that's what it's called) which allows KZread to decide what plays next, if that's what you're referring to. But I notice some KZreadrs point to an empty spot on the screen toward the end of their videos saying "click here next for such and such video" but there is no link there. I can't remember what happened when I wrote that comment now, but that may have been it, and then I do recall trying to searc your content with the city you had mentioned as a keyword and nothing came up. @@lacha608 Hi, so yes, unless there a glitch in KZread, which there could be, what should happen when I pointed up is that a rectangle with the thumbnail of the Matosinhos video comes up for people to click on before the video ends. After a video ends, if you have autoplay turned on, it will roll into the next video that KZread recommends for you. 🙂 Here's the link to the Matosinhos video for you to check out again. ;-) kzread.info/dash/bejne/h2SixK59odvek8Y.html - Josh

Povoa has a very northern portuguese almost working class vibe. It's also quite an ugly town aside from the beach. Not much going on also. For these reasons, povoa would never be a fit for most americans and other expats, they're too fancy pants and willing to pay dumb money to live in bonfim, foz etc
