Josh - Great video!! We are thrilled that you are bringing up this subject, and proud of you for taking on a topic that is very important to many of us. The question of our options down the road is of great concern and certainly on our minds . We understand there is not a clear solution at this time, but it sure helps to start the conversation. Thank you!!!

Bobby, thanks so much! We heard our audience wanted it and didn't know how to tackle it but got some visual inspiration from a big creator in the US and gave it a go for a different style. We'd love it if you'd consider sharing this one with whatever communities you're a part of that you think would find it valuable. This is going to be a difficult video topic to get traction so we need help getting this one out to those that might need it. - Josh

As a UK nurse I have not found problems where I live in South Portugal. There are people in their 90's living in my street and Apoi Domicilario visit frequently and also nusing care at home is provided for people leaving hospital, all in the free public health system. The culture here is different, family and neighbours help to keep people in their own homes. There are clubs for aging people to prevent lonliness. I think it is more about finding out what is available in your area primarily from the Camera or Junta da fregersia.

Thank you SO so much for covering a topic I’ve been wanting to hear more about which is LTC options in PT. My story: I was visiting/working remotely in Lisbon in 2022 for what was supposed to be 3 months but 3 weeks in my mom had a major stroke. I returned to the US overnight and moved near her and have moved her out of her nursing home (a pretty horrid one) as of last fall. At first I thought I’d never travel again being a caregiver now as she is wheelchair bound. After deciding not to give up completely on travel, I actually brought her with me to Lisbon for a month stay in December 2023. I needed to see what it was like navigating certain things there for both myself and for her. I owe Serenity a huge thanks (I also consulted with the CEO in this vid) before making that trip, and Serenity pieced so many things together for me that I wouldnt have been able to do on my own. We had accessible transportation arranged at the airport, I had my mom continue physical therapy while we were there, and had the most amazing caregiver arranged that helped my mom get ready most days that we still keep in touch with to this day. As you stated, planning for LTC is key. In PT (in the US as well), I think I would rather have in home care as long as possible than go into any facility. After seeing what happened to my mom at the age of 62 I am now thinking through both her and my options so additional trips to PT and/or other countries where a plan for LTC might be more feasible for either or both of us are important for me to assess now. I cried returning to the US because the experience there for us was just so…different. And in a good way. Anywho, if you ever want to chat or if you happen to ever consider pooling people together to invest in say agency care (placement of caregivers in the home) or facility care (establishing assisted living or a nursing home) do keep me in mind as I am interested in investing in this industry in PT. Much love from the US and wish me and my mom to return again to PT soon! ~Ciao 😊

It helps to have money, I know people in Portugal who are staying in places very clean, they are very well looked after, not cheap, but still quite cheaper than in North America, in some provinces in Canada people were paying thousands of dollars a month, they were neglected, was shocking when was found out. What happened in Portugal was also choking.

Wow! All the same problems as the US, but way cheaper. My Dad’s assisted living, where he is only rated a low 2 (out of 6) for the care level he needs, living in a studio room (think small dorm room with a bathroom) is $7200/month here in the US. The other assisted living places near us wanted $8200-11,500/month. Mind you, this is over an hour away from the nearest major city (in a far suburban-rural area). Portugal sounds like a real bargain. Oh yeah, fyi, many US states essentially do nothing for LTC for people (yes, you’ll be homeless without family) or have years-long waiting lists for subsidized LTC facilities (and your income level has to be low enough to qualify for those, or again, welcome to homelessness). And those facilities are not lovely places either.

My partner and I were able to get long term care insurance in the USA which covers living overseas. The drawback is you need to get this when your younger and in good physical and financial health first.

While in your 30s, 40s, 50s - one thing a lot cheaper than health insurance and latter years care is: whole food diet and exercise. It’s simple, eat healthy foods, low alcohol, low processed foods, and get some resistance bands and weights.

I already expect, I won’t live in Portugal as a very elderly single person. It’s not practical. I don’t have kids, and my 2 adult nephews already want me to move to France, where they were born and raised. Who knows where they’ll end up, but my becoming a European resident (I’m American), will probably make things easier. 4 of my nephews are American, but they’re children. If I could, I’d probably want to have a permanent base in Portugal, until the end. We’ll see if some sort of alternative community gets established.
