If Portugal Was a State in the U.S., It’s This One

Americans often times try to compare Portugal to a US state to try to figure out something familiar. Topics like weather, topography, food, history, economy, population, and more are always top of the list.
Josh from ExpatsEverywhere researched it and found a state that compares most. The answer might surprise you but South Carolina has a lot of similarities. Watch him break it down as to why.

As a San Diego girl, I’m going to say that Portugal is most like CA because weather matters the most. It’s the reason we bought a house in Cascais. Not interested in the terrible weather in the Southern US 🥵

Having grown up in Georgia, and living in Lisbon now, I never would have thought to compare SC to PT! I know Charleston is very charming, and so is Lisbon. One thing for sure, though. The hot humid 92 degrees in SC will feel much hotter than 98 degrees and dry with a breeze we had for just a few days this summer in Lisbon. I think Portugal feels more international than SC, and also seems very different politically and with religion. I love living in Portugal, but would never live in SC! But I love southern food and sweet iced tea!

Interesting point about the weather comparing SC to Lisbon. Braga and Alentejo have wildly different micro climates that make 100 degree weather happen and one is humid and the other is dry. There’s a decent amount of variety in Portugal alone. - Josh & Kalie

Curiously enough, SC was the State I felt most at home when I did my travels across the US, and now I know why! Charlotte and Mount Pleasant are, IMO, two of the must-sees for those whose idea of the US is skyscrapers and urban ghettos!

This video serves to inform anyone looking to migrate from the US to Portugal and vice-versa. It's an in-depth breakdown of infrastructure, history, cuisine, landscape, etc. So, if one wanted to move to an area of similar comforts, this video would be IDEAL! Wish I had this before I moved.
