Shay la Vie!

Shay la Vie!

I'm a first time boat owner and a single female, so it was a bit crazy to buy a 1981 70' cockpit motoryacht, much less one that is a total project boat! I knew nothing about boats when I started, but I'm learning fast & enjoying the restoration of this old classic motor yacht!

My plans are to bring her systems back to fully functional and learn them inside and out. She needs a lot of work, but this is not a DIY. I'm hiring professionals, but I'll be down in the bilges working with them. We're replacing hoses, repairing/replacing wood and just anything we find as I work my way from hatch to hatch. I've found some things better than expected and others much worse!

Once I get her back in shape, then the real fun starts! I have to learn to drive her! Then, I plan on cruising to the Keys, the Bahamas and beyond!

Join me on this crazy journey! It should be good for a laugh, inspirational and instructional!!!

It's much easier to navigate my videos using the playlists!

    My suggestion would be to replace the panels and have screens where you want them but have an inside panel that can open and close as needed. I have a friend that used the “rain gutters” and he had very little success with them. During light rains they performed ok but the heavy rains you get there they were useless

    @@ShaylaVie There are other types of clear. Find yourself a top MARINE canvas shop and ask them about the one that's as clear as glass but does not roll up. Instead it "hinges" up as it is BUT you need the ceiling room for that which is why I've never opted for it. Last new enclosure on my Sport Fish was $6,000. They typically only last about 8 years as the sun turns them cloudy and after that a horrible yellow. I know your on a low budget but a solution for the heat is add another AC unit. If your lucky it could run off an existing circulating pump but if not will have to add another one.

  • @merc9193
    @merc9193Ай бұрын

    New isinglass would be a good option all the way around, you can have screens in your isinglass too. You just zip close the isinglass window when it rains. The zippers can be made longer so the rain doesn't come in as much there. It will still be hot though. You could have them made so the isinglass is rolled at the bottom instead of the top when open so you could leave a window open a few inches at the top to let the heat out and would still be covered by the ceiling overhang.

    Any one of the RV gutters will work well. As for the corners, there shouldn't be a problem wrapping them around, but I'd highly recommend getting gutter spouts. They help direct water out and away from the vehicle so that it's not running down the sides. I had some on each corner of my RV (that I lived in for 14 years), and they worked great. The only downside to the gutters is that, just like house gutters, they need to be cleaned out at least once a month. And that's basically to prevent gunk from building up in them. That said, I think, again, that the RV gutters with rain spouts would work really well. They shouldn't have a problem wrapping around either, and yes, you can gave the spouts cross each other, or position one under the other. As for your new do, it looks great!

    I have used the RV “J” channel on my motorhome. It worked great. Just remember to slope the J channel. I did high in the middle sloping down toward each end to keep the water flowing. I would also suggest looking into A/C duct to that aft deck. Having the climate controlled area with the option of the glass gives you great flexibility.

  • @SirAdamMeek
    @SirAdamMeekАй бұрын

    I second this option. I'm assuming the J tack would go across the top, which would help alleviate the rain tracking down the zipper, but won't completely mitigate the issue, as water down follow gravity (and the path of least resistance)

    If everyone only ever did things they knew how to do, then no one would do anything new! I had no real experience other than being on other boats when I was young. I wasn't even sure I'd like this lifestyle. I did a lot of research on boats, figured out what I really wanted from this and then bought the boat I thought might give me that experience. I planned 1 year at the dock to get systems up to date, learn the boat inside and out, how to drive it and then take off. I wasn't 100% sure I could do this, and I'm pretty sure a lot of folks had a betting pool on if I'd stick it out (especially after that first couple of weeks!!!) But if you let fear of the unknown keep you from doing something you think you'd love to do, then you're failing yourself. Most people are far more capable than they think they are, but they never find out because they are too afraid to push their boundaries.

    Shay, sorry we missed your live stream, we chatted a while back we are the people from the Pacific Northwest and have a 70’ Hatteras. Just a few things: first you are doing great with your learning curve so good on ya. Next get a different captain, this guy is not a teacher, I was wondering why at slower speeds he has you using your steering wheel, nay, nay, always use your engines, one in forward and one in reverse to manoeuvre in tight spots. What over using the wheel does is when you go to use your engines for a quick manoeuvre you may have forgotten that you had the wheel hard over and the boat won’t respond the way you expect it to when you need it the most and quickly. K, back to boating, on our boat we did 3 months in the Mediterranean, 3 months in the Caribbean, through the Panama Canal and 3 months up the west coast to Vancouver Island. It was a great 9 month journey, so very doable easy Peasy. Would love to spend some of our winter down in Florida cruising with you, soooo you never know. 🤔 Keep up the good work kiddo. Talk soon.

    What you are trying to achieve takes time, Considering this is your first boat, you took on quite a task. Keep moving forward and don't let it drag you down. I am currently on the loop. I left the marina where Ed and Lynn keep their boat on March 12, 2024. I was making good time and distance until I arrive in the Solomon's MD area. When I arrived, I planned to stay two nights. Currently I am at least 5 weeks here. Boating will always present challenges that we don't foresee. Whether it is finding a teaching captain, boat issues or weather. Keep on plugging along and if you would like to colab with an upstart channel, feel free to reach out. Fair wind and following seas. CaseyG aboard M/V TIKA

    Hi Casey! Sure, we can collaborate! Always fun! Why are you stuck in Maryland? I can think of worse places to be stuck lol Hopefully you're in a pretty spot!

    @@ShaylaVie Hi Shay, What keeps me here in Maryland is the backlog of work that the boat yards and mechanics have. The first issue was a leaky prop shaft seal that took 2 1/2 weeks until they could service it. Then due to weather I wasn't able to do the shakedown for a few days. When I did, I found a vibration running between 1400-1800 rpms. Now it has been 2 weeks since I discover it. So just waiting for mechanics is the issue. The place is pretty with some great sunsets, but I would prefer to be catching up and traveling with my looper friends.

    Would love to take the trip bake to the northwest, I do miss blue water and the northwest is one place that one can be at peace (the inland passage up to Alaska is pretty and so many beautiful places to see

    I have not been on the water in PNW in a long time, but hopefully it's still as pristine and amazing. I do have a real desire to make the trip. Maybe I can find a way to make that happen!

    Thanks! Yeah, I can't live (well, work really) without mine either. Cellphones and laptops untied me from a desk!!!
