2nd Time Driving my 70' Yacht! Part 2
This is the second half of my second driving lesson. We pick up at the Hillsborough Inlet bridge and come back down the ICW to the New River. Then back through downtown Fort Lauderdale and them darn Wiggles and back to the dock! Not sure why, but the inbound portion was uneventful and a huge improvement in both skill and comfort level than the outbound portion.
I am learning to drive my 1981 70' Hatteras in one of the worst places do drive a boat!!! The New River in Fort Lauderdale is one of the hardest waterways to navigate. In fact, it's so difficult that the insurance companies require anything over 100' be towed in. Also, it was the day after the crane fell on the 3rd Ave bridge, so it was touch and go if we'd even be able to have the lesson. The bridge was still closed at 1am when I finally gave up and went to sleep. Luckily, it reopened the next morning just in time. The journey out was a bit rough, (you can see it here • 2nd Time Driving my 70... ) but the inbound was cake. =-)
Captain Jim Hensen is here to teach me to drive the boat! Sven, another proud Hatteras owner, came along too! He's been a little gun shy about driving his 65' Hatteras, so he wanted to see first hand what it was like to drive down the river as a noob!
Shout out to Chris Gooseman, aka the Goose! He cleaned up the audio on the flybridge so you could hear the captain giving direction. www.baselineaudio.com

So here's the second half. Yes, my windshield is cracked... it's on the list!!! So is the blistered curved windshield. =-) I did my best to shorten a 7 hour day, and I was able to play with the camera a bit and get some different shots coming back in. It was a lot less stressful than the outbound portion.
I don"t think I've ever been more proud of anyone than you.Living The Dream!. All the work to get to this point, you should be so proud.

@@ShaylaVie It is like watching 2 different persons. 1 deck hand on her way out. And a Captain coming back. The only thing that could keep you back is those bridges and call names. I would make a list for every route you can go there. And before you set of. Have the list ready. That would take a lot of your stress of. Because your radio skills are top notch and skippering likewise.
@ShaylaVie

Wow... that is high praise indeed! I am making a list and there are actually lists out there on the internet of all the bridges and security calls. I've got most of them down for the New River now, but I need to work on the ICW ones. =-)
That dog reminds me of one my sister used to have. She'd "lay in wait" in the back seat of the car with the window open until some poor unsuspecting person passed by on the sidewalk, then she'd pop up with a single deep 'WOOF' that'd give just about anyone on the block a heart attack. Was absolutely hilarious for anyone but the poor person carrying groceries 3 steps away. =)

Well, he's come a long way from the uncouth heathen I brought home from the pound lol He was so quiet and sweet there but oh boy, talk about bait and switch!!! He turned into an aggressive, destructive creature. I wasn't sure if I'd be able to keep him lol but he was just under a year old and spent most of his life in the pound, got abused when he did get adopted, and then brought back. After months of training and love, he turned into a pretty good dog. He doesn't steal food, get in the garbage or chew on anything but his toys, he follows my commands and he'd give his life to protect me. =-)
Every time you take the boat out you will learn something new. Gaining experience with every trip will give you more and more confidence.

Yes, you're 100% right about that. The third time was much smoother (really helped that I watched the second lesson 1000 times editing it lol).
Great job Captain! You stayed very calm in all the traffic! Keep up the good work.

I felt like one! I think I'll actually be able to do this!!!
In the"for what it is worth" department, I have the inflatable fenders for my boat (Hatteras 65ft M/Y) and like 'em. I thought they would be a bit fragile and pop given the abuse I have given them gut they hold up very well. Shop the sales and you can sometimes pick up some deals for them. Good vid.

You go girl! Love the increase in confidence!! I've been checking out your videos since last fall. The husbeast and I are currently boat shopping. This may be a personal question, but how did you negotiate insurance with minimal experience?
@ShaylaVie

That's awesome that you are buying a boat. That's the worst part of the experience lol I liken boat buying to online dating... old pictures, bait and switch, lol On the insurance, there are not many around that will write first timers. Talk to Tammy and tell her I sent you. I have a rider that I have to train with a captain for at least 50 hours and he has to sign off on my ability, thus the driving lessons. =-) Tammy Kraushaar Maritime Insurance International 843.606.5270 Thanks for the vote of confidence and watching! I hope it's been helpful!

Ma'am, may I please offer a small suggestion? I'm really interested in following your channel because I'm really drawn to the Hatteras boats. But, respectfully, may I suggest that while you're filming to try and make a conscious effort to really slow down the panning of your camera while you're filming? The content is enjoyable, but it's a little tough to watch sometimes. Wishing you all the best.
