E3 First week on the boat... Alone and Clueless Part 2

So, we're picking up where we left off. It's my second morning waking up on my 1981 70' Hatteras, aka the Mean Girl! She really came out swinging over the weekend and almost KO'd me!
Power is out on half the boat, and even after I get power back on, I have no running water and the toilets stop flushing. Then AC goes out again... Lemony Snicket, eat your heart out!!!!
And, I'm here alone because it's Father's Day weekend and everyone that said they'd be around to help me figure things is no where to be found. It was hell, but I was very determined. To be honest, I really wanted to skip this video. I am so embarrassed at how clueless I was, but it's also pretty funny and it made me realize just how much I've learned. Now I know how the systems work and how to handle things in the future. But, it was a hell of a rough way to learn!!!
For those with experience in yacht systems and boating, you're going to facepalm and laugh a lot!!! I hope the inexperienced boaters will learn something and more importantly, see that it's nothing to be afraid of. It is getting better as I learn all the systems, too. =-)
I know I'm going to get some comments on this one, so please keep them nice. I know how bad it looks =-) At least I didn't quit, although, in all honesty, due to some paperwork issues, we hadn't actually closed yet; and I confess, I did ask my broker how much trouble I'd be in if I backed out of the deal. =-) He laughed and said "welcome to boating!" It took all my self control not to punch him!
However, I'm not a quitter and if I did back out, it meant the end of the dream and going back to my old life, so I kept my eyes on the prize and kept going.

    This will be a battle Royal for the next year or more. Until you either figure out you like to learn it all and play with it. Or it will consume you alive. You can be timid or nervous about it. Jump in with your eyes closed and hope for the best with any problem you meet. Try to fix it never give up until you are sure you broke something. Read all you can about the monster you live in. Follow every pipe, wire, to see where it goes and figure out why. Then the solutions will come easier when you have an ideer of how it all connects. Good luck.

    You’re doing good!! The 2 worst things that happen on a boat are Fire and Water. For the fire part make sure all your extinguishers are up to date and you know where they are. A water leak on any boat can obviously sink it. Never leave the water hose connected to your boat when you’re away and turned off at night when you’re on board. Hopefully you have at least 2 working bilge pumps as well. Thanks for sharing.

    Pro tip - Learn what noises every piece of equipment makes when it is operating correctly. Learn what the engines sound like, the water pump, fans, everything. What do the engines sound like with the windows open? Closed? From the fly bridge? The thing about boats is that you are always fixing something.

  • @ShaylaVie

    @ShaylaVie

    That's good advice! I try to do that. I am good at hearing water running/sloshing and I do know when an engine is running well, but not so much on pumps, etc. I'll pay more attention!!! Thanks!

    @@ShaylaVie - You are most welcome. When a car goes past me I can tell a lot just by listening. There is a certain squeak that bad A-arm bushing make for example. Rotten wood has a different thump sound than good wood. Delaminated fiberglass sounds different than stable glass. I know it is risky, but ask the guys at the boat yard what they are working on and ask them to show you. Good luck and happy trails.

    That owners manual will become your best resource, When we first got our boat I had some problems as she had sat awhile. Everything original to your boat is listed in that book if it is complete, Please be careful with shore water pressure going into your boat they can and will sink a boat if your blidge pump quits when needed. lots of old lines and connection that could fail. I m sure you got you boat pump going by now but if you didn't, on the pump is the pressure switch and if it lost pressure due to power or lack of water in the tank then there is a little lever on the side of the switch that you have to hold up until it reaches a certain psi then it will run by itself,, your doing great you have a lovely boat for sure. Keep the videos coming. Jim
