The USA G7 decision to use income from frozen Russian assets to assist Ukraine may not only be a theft and abuse of power and illegal/immoral. More importantly it may give the message to countries which have their Sovereign Reserves Funds including their citizens in the USA and G7 countries may now should take note that their assets and wealth in USA and G7 countries maybe at risk if the countries were to go against USA interests or refuse to comply with USA directed sanctions. Saudi Arabia has given a warning but is equally important for other countries with Investments and savings in the USA and G7 countries to voice their concerns. India has started requiring it's gold reserves to be returned to India. Other countries may need to take appropriate measures to safeguard their wealth and reserves in USA and G7 countries. Bless all

Because of our loss of manufacturing, the US will be unable to be on a warfooting when a major war breaks out. This is a national security issue neglected by our leadership. All of our munitions stockpiles and national petroleum reserves are depleted.

Really well said and it applies to all Western countries not just America. Unfortunately the ideology of our governments is such that they don’t really care. Our governing elites aren’t impacted financially by the policies that created this debacle as they move in another world where donations from wealthy elites and corporations are essential for reelection. Eventually it will reach a point where revolution will be the tool that implodes this farce but at great cost unfortunately.

the international companies who dominated US manufacturing built facilities off shore prior to the passing of NAFTA and PAFTA. Sara Lee corporation had 2 off shore facilities; prior to those trade agreements passing, they built 7 in Mexico, one in almost every central American country, Haiti and the DR. 14 in total as soon as the treaties were signed. They had 100 trucks at the Mexican border of cut parts to be assembled in Mexico. Soon after, Mexico being Mexico, the Mexican government basically blackmailed Sara Lee for concessions that were not originally agreed upon. Rinse and repeat across the spectrum of countries that involved these treaties. Those international companies had agreements with those countries for cheap labor. Those companies incentives went overseas with the jobs; if the government had not screwed the American workers for their profits, with the total backing and assistance of our government and elected officials.

Basically, it was the small textile and footwear importers that began importing from China followed by US manufacturers importing components and parts assembled in U.S and Mexico. Afterwards it became clear that everyone had to play the import game to bolster profits. Obviously Big Biz then used lobbyists to further liberalize trade quotas, tarrifs and a host of regulations to their advantage. On the export side from the US there was no such stimulus except for exporting military items., and high tech. Nevertheless, Imports skyrocketed with abandon believing the strong US Dollar trade in energy would save the day---it has not because other Nations in Middle East and Russia are huge energy producers now with military capabilities protecting their interests.. Arab Spring , for instance, has not been a success. Europe is a microcosim of this new trade/energy dynamic resulting in inflation for them, sabotage, and conflict at their doorstep. NATO expansion threats towards resource rich Russia via Civil war in Ukraine further strains allegencies according to culture, language and how individual Bread is Buttered in the East and West Ukraine leading to tragic war torn losses in treasure and lives .. I have seen this transition first hand of America being a Free Trade advocate to now reversing course towards Protectionism. Question is how will America redine itself with a positive role to World Cooperation ? The military might approach is not working, nor will the Deficits forever either. Eugene Milosh, former President for 20 years of American Association of Exportes and Importers{retired).

Americans have never been interested in "their own people" as an economic group: the individual takes precedence over the collective ( economically if not religious/culturally ). Maybe it aint fair, but it works for americans...

It will be good to ask 3 levels of “why” to really understand the situation - how we got here, what choices we had, what mistakes were made? looking back, what should we have done differently along the way. Otherwise, it’s just propaganda of opposing viewpoint

I agree with you that those thinking that it will be easy to establish manufacturing in the US are naive. The first time the US did, it was like taking a penalty without a goalie. Now, there are experienced goalies, and, worse, the spectators know that the exploitative rules based order is all you get from the US. I see a lot of shots going off target

These are brilliant prescriptions for economic renewal but you have stopped short of answering HOW this can be achieved. You are not alone in this; most people engaged in economic and political analysis face the same criticism. But e know WHAT needs to be done. It is time to focus on HOW it will be done and WHO will do it, or there will be no way to say WHEN it will happen.

The US didn't learn anything from its engagement with Japan. It's manufacturing was already found wanting and they didn't bother to improve. They blamed Japan as well then. Now they blame China.

Yes, financial capitalism has killed US-manufacturing and demoralized the US-population. Yet, within modern societies manufacturing will be automated and robotized, shifting many workers towards the service industry. THE SOCIAL STATE HAS TO GARANTEE BY COMPUTERS LOW PRICES FOR IMPORTANT SOCIAL SERVICES (MOBILE PHONES/ INTERNET ETC) AND DECENT WAGES FOR WORKERS. EMPLOYERS/ CAPITALIST/ UNIONS MUST ALL BE STRIPPED OF THEIR POWERS WITHIN THE MARKETS.

Thank you for your always excellent explanation with honesty . Each country if it needs to protect its people it invest in them to make them better and to compete better, by protecting the people through tariff others can do that as well, and it will never stop and it will all create a weak society built on protection rather than production. In my opinion, to build an offshore manufacturing is not only to increase profit, but generally for multiple reason, one of them the efficiency of specially the far east workers as much higher than in the western world , even though they lack the exact quality, but they are catching up, once they catch up with the quality with higher efficiency, less pay and lack of incentive, would lead anybody even individual would base their purchase on such reasons, even if we have to choose simply between a specific grocery shop to another . So in my opinion, what you mentioning about offshore manufacturing America itself are doing it, as America was built on other country, losing their intellectual and engineer to America, Elon Musk for example, is originally from South Africa, Jeff from Amazon is originally from cube, it did get the biggest shirt in the world in the past from the offshore idea, but gradually they’re losing it because of the laws and the complication, taxation, multiple things, foreign intellectual and investors now are looking to other places beside America and Europe .

We have encouraged oligopolies rather than small business. We have encouraged outsourcing rather than strengthening businesses rooted in communities 😢. We have discouraged trades and craftsmanship. We have promoted quantity rather than quality. We have incentivized disposable products rather than the 4 R’s. We have ruthlessly eroded and poisoned the soil for short term gain. We have polluted our streams, rivers and aquifers. All this diminishes our long term capacity for sustainable community businesses and farms. These policies have hollowed out not only our manufacturing but our communities and our very spirit. Wall Street greed rather than Main Street has been prioritized. Hence our descent to “hell in a handbasket” These policies can be reversed and to do so would clearly benefit the national interest on many levels, but no one with influence over the levers of political and economic power will even discuss it, let alone commence the work to change direction.
