  In what way is it a gimmick? Please elaborate. If you take away the frame you're left with stones, ceramic rod, and a leather strop, all things that millions of people have sharpened their knives with for 10s of thousands of years. (if it wasnt diamond it was stone or ceramic). There's literally no logic that you can use to say this is a gimmick. You're getting a 5 stage sharpening system that has taken thousands of knives from dull to shaving for $40. You're either a troll or you're ignorant and too stupid to realize that you need to research before opening your cockholster.

  Greetings from the Coast Range! What part of the coast were you at? Nice review. I've seen others comment that they remove the ceramic rod prior to sharpening with the diamond plates. With the rod out of the way, they say you can sharpen your blade closer to the hilt.

  Great comparison video! I think a convex edge would be superior to a concave as well. The concave would get deeper bite with less effort, but would get a ton more friction and deceleration when you enter the wood. A convex head shape would initiate with more force than penetration, but would maintain its friction level better and wouldn't get stuck as easily or lose velocity in the work. Plus, the way it feels when you really give er the beans on a nice dry round, you are trying to shock the wood apart, then follow through with it. I dont split every day, but ive corded up a few trees in my time. Worst is semi rotten wood. For that you want an axe thats convex as well. Ittl get buried into the log. We had some monster rounds 32in+ that had gone soft and decided to split em anyways. They sunk in good you had to hammer the heck out them to shock them apart.

  I use a set of Shar-pal credit card sized diamond plates wrapped in a leather strap coated with diamond stropping compound to use as a strop. The cards are 325,600 & 1000 grits, can be used without water or lubrication, are attached to a sturdy plastic card with a finger ring to help you hold them more easily and safely and they have a highly polished metal signal mirror under the folding finger ring. I keep the 325 grit one in with either my hatchet or machete and the 600 and 1000 grit in a small plastic container with a microfiber cloth and an artist's eraser to clean the plates of rust and dirt

  If you are not a wood worker then why are you telling people to use a spoke shave to wittle down a perfectly good handle ? You just shortened the life of the tool greatly! 11:43

  Stainless steel is much better, it won't freaking RUST (!!!) These blades come with excellent factory sharpness.. Nobody is trying to use these pocket knives as RAZOR BLADES 🙄

  That's why most of your pocket knives are stainless. Plenty hard and sharp enough for what a pocket knife is supposed to do. And the high quality carbon steel is left to the work horse, camp, or tactical knives.

  Use the sharpener with the fingergrip on your lap for more stability. With the way you sharpen now you end up with messing up the angle.

  Hi Matt. Excellent video and very helpful for choosing the right grub hoe. I was wondering, how tall are you. I have a 3# grub hoe with two head sizes with a 51" handle and it definitely feels too short for me at 5'7 1/2" My daughter at 5'3" likes it, but even she thinks it could be a bit longer. I'm leaning more towards the German hoe since it is lighter and I'm 76. Just wondering though if that 53"s is long enough.
