Mr History

Mr History

Hi there, welcome to Mr History!

On this channel I'd like to answer the common and uncommon questions people have about history. You can find answers and solutions anywhere - but sometimes they're a little too tough or intimidating. I'd like to untangle the often troublesome topics and explain them all in crystalline clarity, maybe even with a joke or two.

I will be happy, as the channel grows, to answer requests for videos on anything (within reason) in history. There's so many good history channels on KZread - but a lot - maybe even most of them focus on battles and war. Most of history, however, takes place off the battlefield and is every bit as interesting and crucial to understanding humanity and how we got to where we are, which hopefully informs us on where we are headed.

The worst video, very misleading and also very short for a country with rich history. Are you Serbian? When you made a video about Serbia, you even talked about Roman emperors before Slavs even came here. Why not mention Diocletian, who was from Doclea, old city near Podgorica, Montenegro? Also, when Slavs came and mixed with Illyrians, Doclea was Montenegrin first kingdom, not Serbian, as you mentioned in video about Serbia. You even talked about Serbian first king, who became one long after Doclean kings. Check your facts before making a video! Crnojevic dynasty was also Montenegrin, founded first printing house in southeastern europe. Our ancestors were free people (unlike all around us) fighting the Turks for 500 years. First uprising in WW2 in Europe... So many interesting things skipped... Edit: Also, after being one of the contries that won WW1, we were annexed by Serbia, supported by France (our allies!). The same Serbia we saved from Austro-Hungarians a year before! Christmas Uprising failed and we lost our country and our church was abolished.

Pronunciation and christian (protestant) majority in the Ottoman army at the second siege of Vienna, 1683: Amazing quick summary and as always lots of appreciation for making the effort to pronounce important names and events, the way the locals do! You even got the tongue twister Österreich nearly completely right. The only little detail missing is, that we pronounce the t like a d: sounds like Oesderreich. But the impossible "ch" was spot on and even the British part of my family, who had lived in Vienna for over 60 years had troubles nailing it down. One last detail, it was the Ottomans, not the "Turks" that ruled the Ottoman Empire and whose army besieged Vienna twice. It may seem like a minor detail in a short video that understandably doesn't have the time to explain the difference. It DOES matter though, because the narrow majority of the Ottoman army that besieged Vienna in 1683 where actually christians. No, most of them where not the cliché Janissaries, at the time forcefully abducted as children from the occupied Balkan countries, but they were actually newly converted protestants (even in the heartland of Catholicism, for a short time protestant where close to become the majority in Tyrol, Carinthia and Styria a century until decades earlier before they where brutally expelled to Romania, Hungary and the Balkans by the Habsburgs, some of them even made it to the USA, and are there still know as Hutterites, a kind of more modernised version of the Amish). They voluntarily joined but also were used by the Ottoman army of Kara Mustafa, because they knew from own experience, although being taxed much higher and partially being discriminated, they where at least allowed to remain being protestants in a muslim empire, with at least some citizen rights. They knew too well what actually did happen to them when the Habsburgs pushed the Ottomans back down to Croatia: instant conversion and still being marginalised for life or death. For fellow historians, here is one of the more detailed scientific publications on that matter: www.researchgate.net/publication/331967260_The_Siege_of_Vienna_and_other_Muslim_Christian_military_alliances It is fascinating how these and many important historical facts get pushed away if they don't fit the current national narrative of any country.

If your are emphasizing on the history and demographic origins of the People of Haiti. Then it should have began with the arrival of the French in 1625. After the historical depopulation events of 1605-1606 or the devastaions of Osorio. 1641 French buccaneers established settlements in North-western Hispaniola. 1642 King Louis XIII authorized the slave trade for the French colonies. 1680-1700 the French would displace tobacco growing and Indigo for Sugar cane. Adopting a brutal plantation model in the 18th century. 18th century Saint Domingue - 1700-1791 the French would import in mass enslaved people of African descent. Who liberate themselves in 1804 from the French. These people arrived into the island via the French 200 year's thereafter the remaining Taínos were hispanizied and admixed among the Spanish population of Santo Domingo. For this reason Taíno ancestry in Haiti is non existent (2017,2020).
