Daily tips for musicians, artists and bands on how to have a long term career in the music business.
I started my career as a bass tutor at The Academy of Contemporary Music back in 1997 (probably a Wednesday). 4 years later I set up BIMM (The British and Irish Institute of Modern Music) with some amazing friends which is now the largest set of music colleges in the world. My online academy DK Music Business Academy is dedicated to artists looking to build an audience and monetise their music.
This channel is all about helping you build your career in the music industry, whether that is releasing and promoting music or finding opportunities as a musician. We are in this together!

Learn to be comfortable speaking to your audience. Prepare what you are going to say and practice it!
Go the point … Gadaaminit
Time is money after all. CEO's like to charge for their time.
Why don’t artists not sell their content to Spotify, Apple Music, etc. Go back to making CD’s and having radio stations play their stuff? Put the streaming companies out of business. There is no collusion if the artists band together and end it. It is a double edged sword for artists trying to make it. I’d rather buy CD’s or records anyway. I watched The Eagles documentary. They were sent to Colorado to hone their skills before making it big. The artists hated the big record companies for the business model they worked under. But for all the superstars that made big money, how many bands didn’t make it? Maybe it’s time to bring the big companies back. Cost them less money to produce albums due to today’s technology. Let the indie’s use social media to get a contract with a label. There are a lot of great songs that are on albums that never get heard.
Setting up in a circle is great for communication in the rehearsal room, for developing or fine tuning arrangements and so on. However, if the objective is preparing for live gigs rather than a studio recording, then the band ought to have a rehearsal or three set up as though they're on stage. This is because the band must also gel when the accordion, bongo and zither players can't easily make eye contact.
The worst part of being over 30 is you only really accept that your 20s are gone at 35. And before you know it, your 40s are already looming.
How did you decide the key for this song, was it just coincidence that you sang it in the original key??
........... This is a joke, right?
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him shall not perish, but have everlasting life. Family in Christ, God Loves all! Pray in Jesus name, Amen! :D. 🙏 ❤️ Deny the Flesh, make the Lord your life of your life and live Holy and sumit, succumb your will to God trust him in every aspect of ur life its a battle and I know its hard but Trust God love for him He got us Follow Christ 🙏 ❤️We lead people to God, not away with possible sin or give them the chance too.
Damn..I wish you were my manager.
well said but i'm very doubtful any of that will mean anything to business overlords, there's no real competition, exploitation is the name of the game
Peoples' attention is saturated, and more goes in than comes out. Done.
I hope someone can understand my feelings with AI in Music: When I was young I have always felt that I have a talent for music, I even studied music, then I tried to find people with whom I could learn and put into practice to fulfill what I felt was what I wanted. In the process I was one of those who did not have the opportunities or perhaps luck, perhaps I even lacked more insistence, but I also gave up when I got tired of meeting people who only deceived me and took advantage of the desires I had to enter music. . My passion was always writing songs, but I gave up when I was tired of being made to pay for everything and always being exploited. Today I am 44 years old, and for me it has been like a gift to have the opportunity to have access to tools where I can capture my lyrics and choose the best melody or music and be able to share it. Now the problem is that distributors do not want to accept content that has been generated by one of those music AIs, and I think that is not fair. There are many people, like me, who perhaps the only thing that has been missing is to be able to expose our creativity... without being exploited and used by malicious people in the industry.
Damian Keyes is the hero we need. Dude has a sweet name, too.
You really helped me. Thank you. Your words got my mind right and reminded me of a ton of things I needed to hear. Thank you.
I think Ek meant ‘uploading’ your music and create ‘content’ that way is basically free…
If i was in music id spend no money on making or promoting it. Its fun to make a video with the band, fun to edit and do all the acting and what not, to then finally watch it. I just think its really fun to do you know? i think the video would be more for me lol.
The problem is, is that people keep giving Spotify their real estate. (Their music)
I know that 96% of bands and musicians, especially the older Boomer/Gen X guys are NOT ganna be down with using the click…
It is a tool. An artist is still an artist and this is not a shortcut for real talent. It is like when Adobe came out with templates for Graphic Artists. It ended up being a tool but the professionals still stood out from the non trained people.
Within the next couple of years all of our talents will mean f*ck all anyway as AI is going to take over by storm. I guess it's time to go look for another carreer.
I’m getting my music out there !! Working on a dropping an ep soon. Thnx🤟🏽
You are absolutrly right, it's all about conversion. That is something I am working hard at is to convert that attention into retention. I am glad I subscribed to your channel recently. Lots of good information in all the videos of yours.
I've been wondering for a while now why there isn't an alternative platform made by independent programmers who genuinely love music (and musicians) that to some degree gives listeners what Spotify and Apple music etc. don't give them - something similar to Bandcamp but with the possibility to make playlists (which I don't think is possible on bandcamp? correct me if I'm wrong)..
#respect bro
Nice one, Damian! I'm so close to leaving Spotify, except that my music's just started to get traction over there lol. Thank you for being the voice of the indie music industry 💕
As with everything in winner-takes-all capitalism, most musicians are done but a few are going on to pinnacles never before seen in terms of wealth and power. So you think that these tech corps have a conscience...really? If not, why are you softsoaping this?
Country Music is so bad 😂
Nobody cares. People don’t even care about music anymore. It’s treated as aural wallpaper.
Very interesting Thoughts!
Imnot on Spotify. I will not let them have my life and effort
Coolness! :-)
Yup, they just killed me .. even KZread 'analytics' stopped detecting views - Imagine, a struggling guy like me barely survived a massive stroke and with less than $50 / month (I know I've mentioned this before), but why are they doing this .. I have dozens of albums, bunches of EPs and a billion singles .. - Maybe Its garbage, but thats not what the views showed just until 3 weeks ago. :)
Getting so hard to put links in these days. They nearly all want you to pay for ads, Otherwise really good advice. Spent so much of my life not being the interesting person so I could pass for a normal.
BRILLIANT!! THANK YOU SO MUCH 🙂
do they have a point? yes. We're fucking musicians or producers, not marketeers, or salesmen, and yet we're made to be monkeys that don't question, and just say "how high" when told to jump. Fuck marketing. Fuck social media. Fuck content creation.
Great point on Spotify. I posted on my socails about it and wow the response. I was like, why put yourself at a disadvantage by removing your music? Losing any one spot to promote is bad period, especially with how much is available to listen to. People can easily listen to someone else instead, right?
Thank you for the great quality videos and even better advice.
Love your videos
Ekscelent disrespect bij Daniel. Thanks Damian.
All my friends are goddam casuals. They talk a big talk about " one day getting social media " . I just don't have time for these people anymore. Where are all the savages?
I want to build something so great everyone will find it.
I was told to go on Spotify. I was like, “I could get fans but no money “! In other words, my music will always be a hobby but, if it goes all the way, I would like to reap the benefits? Taylor feels like Spotify ripped her off.
Really needed to see this video. After procrastinating for months, I finally want to get off my butt and push my music. But I know I will have to make content. You make everything look easy and smooth!
We are pulling off Spotify and all streaming platforms! We deserve 0.1$ per stream! 10 tracks on an album is 1$, if you listen the album 10 times its 10$. Thats the only fair solution for streaming. 0.0005$ per stream (1000 minimum) is slavery! This guy kidnapped the music and locked it in Spotify to make not millions, but billions of dollars of profits and destroy the creativity of musicians.
I believe this Mr Spotify person was talking about AI getting into the music industry. I am an aspiring musician who just barely started learning how to make digital music so I'm a newbie. AI generated music is definitely not the best and greatest but it is decent and definitely better than what I can do now and it will only get exponentially better and cheaper to use with time
This is great info! I was wondering what was going on always getting 200-300 views and once and a while 400. Time to rework things!
Can you make a video about how to promote music if you're not a singer, on socials. I'm making drum & Bass. All the advice uses singers or rappers as an example (eg Conner Price or Nic D)
Well, for your information, Dubai was build with slave working hands from Pakistan and India. Nothing to be proud of. It is like praising Sony Music for their success when we all know that the contracts they make actually with musicians are abusive.
