Damian Keyes

Daily tips for musicians, artists and bands on how to have a long term career in the music business.

I started my career as a bass tutor at The Academy of Contemporary Music back in 1997 (probably a Wednesday). 4 years later I set up BIMM (The British and Irish Institute of Modern Music) with some amazing friends which is now the largest set of music colleges in the world. My online academy DK Music Business Academy is dedicated to artists looking to build an audience and monetise their music.

This channel is all about helping you build your career in the music industry, whether that is releasing and promoting music or finding opportunities as a musician. We are in this together!

Why don’t artists not sell their content to Spotify, Apple Music, etc. Go back to making CD’s and having radio stations play their stuff? Put the streaming companies out of business. There is no collusion if the artists band together and end it. It is a double edged sword for artists trying to make it. I’d rather buy CD’s or records anyway. I watched The Eagles documentary. They were sent to Colorado to hone their skills before making it big. The artists hated the big record companies for the business model they worked under. But for all the superstars that made big money, how many bands didn’t make it? Maybe it’s time to bring the big companies back. Cost them less money to produce albums due to today’s technology. Let the indie’s use social media to get a contract with a label. There are a lot of great songs that are on albums that never get heard.

Setting up in a circle is great for communication in the rehearsal room, for developing or fine tuning arrangements and so on. However, if the objective is preparing for live gigs rather than a studio recording, then the band ought to have a rehearsal or three set up as though they're on stage. This is because the band must also gel when the accordion, bongo and zither players can't easily make eye contact.

The worst part of being over 30 is you only really accept that your 20s are gone at 35. And before you know it, your 40s are already looming.

How did you decide the key for this song, was it just coincidence that you sang it in the original key??

I hope someone can understand my feelings with AI in Music: When I was young I have always felt that I have a talent for music, I even studied music, then I tried to find people with whom I could learn and put into practice to fulfill what I felt was what I wanted. In the process I was one of those who did not have the opportunities or perhaps luck, perhaps I even lacked more insistence, but I also gave up when I got tired of meeting people who only deceived me and took advantage of the desires I had to enter music. . My passion was always writing songs, but I gave up when I was tired of being made to pay for everything and always being exploited. Today I am 44 years old, and for me it has been like a gift to have the opportunity to have access to tools where I can capture my lyrics and choose the best melody or music and be able to share it. Now the problem is that distributors do not want to accept content that has been generated by one of those music AIs, and I think that is not fair. There are many people, like me, who perhaps the only thing that has been missing is to be able to expose our creativity... without being exploited and used by malicious people in the industry.

If i was in music id spend no money on making or promoting it. Its fun to make a video with the band, fun to edit and do all the acting and what not, to then finally watch it. I just think its really fun to do you know? i think the video would be more for me lol.

It is a tool. An artist is still an artist and this is not a shortcut for real talent. It is like when Adobe came out with templates for Graphic Artists. It ended up being a tool but the professionals still stood out from the non trained people.

I've been wondering for a while now why there isn't an alternative platform made by independent programmers who genuinely love music (and musicians) that to some degree gives listeners what Spotify and Apple music etc. don't give them - something similar to Bandcamp but with the possibility to make playlists (which I don't think is possible on bandcamp? correct me if I'm wrong)..

As with everything in winner-takes-all capitalism, most musicians are done but a few are going on to pinnacles never before seen in terms of wealth and power. So you think that these tech corps have a conscience...really? If not, why are you softsoaping this?

Yup, they just killed me .. even KZread 'analytics' stopped detecting views - Imagine, a struggling guy like me barely survived a massive stroke and with less than $50 / month (I know I've mentioned this before), but why are they doing this .. I have dozens of albums, bunches of EPs and a billion singles .. - Maybe Its garbage, but thats not what the views showed just until 3 weeks ago. :)

do they have a point? yes. We're fucking musicians or producers, not marketeers, or salesmen, and yet we're made to be monkeys that don't question, and just say "how high" when told to jump. Fuck marketing. Fuck social media. Fuck content creation.

Great point on Spotify. I posted on my socails about it and wow the response. I was like, why put yourself at a disadvantage by removing your music? Losing any one spot to promote is bad period, especially with how much is available to listen to. People can easily listen to someone else instead, right?

We are pulling off Spotify and all streaming platforms! We deserve 0.1$ per stream! 10 tracks on an album is 1$, if you listen the album 10 times its 10$. Thats the only fair solution for streaming. 0.0005$ per stream (1000 minimum) is slavery! This guy kidnapped the music and locked it in Spotify to make not millions, but billions of dollars of profits and destroy the creativity of musicians.

I believe this Mr Spotify person was talking about AI getting into the music industry. I am an aspiring musician who just barely started learning how to make digital music so I'm a newbie. AI generated music is definitely not the best and greatest but it is decent and definitely better than what I can do now and it will only get exponentially better and cheaper to use with time

Well, for your information, Dubai was build with slave working hands from Pakistan and India. Nothing to be proud of. It is like praising Sony Music for their success when we all know that the contracts they make actually with musicians are abusive.
