👇 ABOUT ME:
Hey! I’m Damian Keyes and I've worked with musicians every day of my life for the past 20 years. The internet is de ply untrusting understandably and here is my background so you can have the full picture.
When I was 18, I was signed to a major label and at 23 I co-founded a Music University in Europe called BIMM (valued at $300M). I’m also a bass player, I’ve played for a number of artists including Eric Clapton, Alanis Morrisette and Billy Cobham. I initially retired at 30, but realised that life gets boring if you’re not building!
I have always been in-between the music industry and education which is how I ended up building my KZread channel - I’ve been teaching artists how to release music long before it was a ‘niche’! I now educate artists around the world with my Academy, KZread channel and Social Agency.
It’s great to meet you and looking forward to working together on your music!

A message to help you today 👇 I get it, it’s hard. Writing music, producing music, releasing music, monetizing your music is HARD. It’s the most competitive industry outside of sport and there is so much competition everywhere. It’s too easy to look at your phone, look at someone else’s numbers and compare/wish they were yours. But I promise you… That other person you’re looking at is looking at someone else’s numbers thinking exactly the same. All that happens when you reach one landmark is you immediately look to the next. So take a moment now to appreciate where you’re at RIGHT NOW in your journey. All you can do is love the journey because the destination will never feel how you think it will. We’re all on our own rollercoaster… There will ALWAYS be someone doing “better” than you and take comfort in that. You’re doing absolutely fine, keep working hard and enjoying the journey. Have faith in yourself and be honest with your gut feeling. If you feel you’re not working hard enough, work harder. If you feel like something isn’t working, change it up and test different avenues. There’s ALWAYS answers but you won’t find them in unhealthy comparisons. Hope that helps you today and let’s smash this week. Damo 🖤

It happens so often that I catch myself comparing our social media, our art and the amount of time I put into our band to other bands that I feel are doing better. It's so hard to stop doing this even if you realise it. But you are totally right! If you always compare yourself to others doing "better", it only drags you down and makes you feel uncomfortable. So thank you for telling me ones again and for the motivation! Helps a lot!

I just recently figured out what to do to work around all the extra family time, too. Those extra 6 hours a day disappear when you're raising a family. First of all, the first hour is spent getting ready for work, we don't just hop out of bed and start commuting. Then you cook dinner for your family, prep their lunches, clean the dishes, that's an extra 3 hours there. Then you're left with only 2 hours of time to actually relax, and I take that every time, because it's exhausting working for 14 hours a day, I don't want to take away the only 2 hours I have to unwind. Not to mention the amount of time I actually want to spend with my family. Then there's the days you do laundry, grocery shopping, etc. This is a flawed idea that you can find all this free time when 11 of my 16 waking hours are dedicated to my full time job (1 hour commute both ways and 1 hour getting ready in the morning). My regular day starts at 6am, and when I finally get settled to have time for myself, it's 10pm. I don't even get the time to write the actual music. This video still doesn't apply to me, but im glad to input my solution. You assume we can cook meals in less than an hour and that we don't have to maintain our relationships. It's still impossible to make time on the days I work. Luckily for me, I just started substitute teaching. It pays 2-3x more than my minimum wage jobs did, and I only have to work 180-210 days a year maximum. I'm left with at least 155 days off a year that I can do music work. I'm leaving this here for anyone who is also in my situation. All i needed to start was a bachelors degree.

Life is relentless and we live our past choices. I hear everything you are saying but create a compelling future and work bit by bit toward it. Also our dreams don't always satisfy but having my father leave when I was 3 was the worst thing ever and what you are doing is more important than you can know. Keep on keeping on

This!!! I got so triggered when he started talking about the hours off... Apart from work/commute the only thing you have to do is music/promotion according to him... People have lives they need to maintain. For example, if my gf wants to watch something in the evening when we have some time to relax that's all of my free time gone that day. If my friends want to do something because it's been so long since we saw each other bc of our busy schedules, that's my free time gone as well. And that's not even counting all the daily tasks like cleaning, cooking etc... His advice is only applicable when you don't have any responsibilities/relationships (or very rich) or are willing to crash and burn everything for your music. I'm not willing to do that and I bet there are way more sustainable ways of managing this, especially if your ambition is not to make it big like the superstars. I try to make do with a few hours of full focus each week, usually in the weekends when I have some more time and I just build up steadily and slowly each week. Slow and steady wins the race.

Important to also emphasise that rest is an important part of your calendar! Otherwise, there's a good chance you won't be making music for more than a few months if you go ham and work on your artist project with every spare hour you have. Been there, done that.

Actually as I am an ambient music producer, I use the ambience around to promote my music. When I commute by train, early in the morning there is a mist on the rails sometimes - so that is a great scenery to record some shorts. So I do some promotion while I commute.

I work full time and barely have time for anything lately but when I get home from work I am right back in the game. Actually I even do music while at work I hum melodies and lyrics into my phone when I get ideas, I use social media all day long to engage with fans and promote, probably shouldn't but I have to keep up with it and, any time I have to do anything with my music I do it whether I have time or not to get it done and I try to make content ahead of time if I can for later use. Sometimes I will make and edit a short video 30 mins before work and edit it and upload it everywhere with barely enough time to spare to jump in my car and get to work, but it all works out lol. I even make videos on my lunch break to keep fans in the loop with what I'm doing or talk about my new song I have coming out tomorrow. Gott a do what you gotta do if you really want it.

I am in the place of example 2 that you shared at the beginning except I am not a manager. So, the disposable income is not there. Or at least, there isn’t as much. I am in a band that also can’t meet more often than about every three weeks. We have written one song so far and it’s taken a month. I went to school for production, so recording, mixing, mastering, etc. Are in my skill set. Promotion and social media presence on the other hand, not there. I will have to watch and re-watch this video multiple times before it likely starts to click, but I love the tips given here. I am also married and have a baby on the way so I’m conflicted with the priorities because music can easily become a distraction from quality time with wife and child rather than what I am intending- prioritizing it.

Hey James, Live sessions defo are a good idea especially on platforms like TikTok and IG. I would stick to the basics and what you feel the most comfortable with. If you like performing live then find ways to perform where people can discover you whether that digitally or in person. Also think about where your songs can go even in demo form as it doesn't have to be a full release on Spotify etc. It could on socials and Soundcloud. Most importantly keep creating and showing the world and people will start to find you 🙂🙂

You can stagger that tbh, a song a week leaves no room for promo and you would be burnt out easily. You can release a song and then promo for 2 weeks and then pre-promo for 1 week Release Promo for 2 weeks That would be like 1 song a month 1 week for pre-release 1 week for actual week of release 2 weeks for post release

I feel your pain, it's such a tough thing to start without an audience. I want you to start with some simple routine around making content for you and your music on TikTok/Insta. TikTok is the best place for discovery which means content is shown to new people on every post. Start with making 15-20 seconds worth of content which features your music or your talent and then optimise as you go, which means try and figure out what works and what doesn't so you can experiment with more content. If you check out my TikTok (Damian Keyes) you will see some examples that we do with labels and artists on a weekly basis. I hope this helps but don't get discouraged, keep on creating, promoting and learning.

I'm beyond caring at this point. I've went from taking things seriously to not giving a shit, after my ex destroyed the last band I was in. My current band have piss poor availability, that's not usually known till the last minute and there's hardly any studios left in the city after COVID so it's just a pure sore head at times. I'm joining 99% of other local bands in just having a three hour per week, drunk piss up with the boys, going nowhere (but at least it's fun). Once the next year is up I reckon I'll probably just make music at home and sack playing in bands entirely.

I don't blame you Damian. But. I have a full time job, a daughter every second week that's 7 years old - and a girlfriend. I have to live faaaaar away from any cultural/music scene because my daughter is here - and I refuse to be an absent father like so many musicians. I have no time, no disposable money and I can't go where X marks the spot. My asset is being at a extremely high level of guitar talent - and I have had a "yes" from the biggest stars in my jazzfusion niche, which are people like Mike Stern, Dave Weckl, Randy Brecker, Jimmy Haslip. But I've never had the money to do the albums or set up any tours with them. Your video is balancing time and money. I have neither. And location is disadvantage too. Could you please just do a video and admit that sometimes succes is just not possible? Thanks for your work. If I was 20 years younger and didn't have a child. I guess many of your tireless advice could work. All the best Steffen Brix

  • @DamianKeyes

I really appreciate this comment as I wanted to make this video for people who are struggling with both time and money but it's always hard with individual cases. Saying that I feel like you are in the perfect place to get traction due to clearly having enough talent in a niche that appreciates live playing. So firstly I think it's important to define the word 'Success'. What does that look and feel like? Is success based on financial criteria, opportunities or adoration by building a fan base on socials? If so how much and how many? If I look at someone like Mateus Asato, Melanie Faye or Mckrocklin (Thomas Mckrocklin you may remember him) they make content around their playing in the room. The production quality is high (visual and audio) but not unrealistic. They are a part of the guitar community understand how to push themselves with the SEO, descriptions and #'s etc. Most importantly they are consistent and bring value to an audience without spending any money and only using their talent and creativity. The only time I would admit success is out of the realms of possibility is when the artist in question has no talent as well as little time. The money is a replacement for creativity and time but talent and creativity will always win out if the artist is consistent on socials and learns how to get the message in front of the right demographic. I know it's tough but you have the tools and the talent so with a very small amount of time (an hour here and there) a lot is possible especially if you look after your audience with good quality content and value. Hope this helps, I'm here to help Damo
