How To Release Music With No Money In 2023
Yesterday I received a DM which said "I'm about to release music but I feel lost. There's so many things to think about and I don't have the money or the time, what do I do?" Here is my simple guide on what to do to avoid overwhelm when releasing your next single, promoting your music on Spotify and other platforms, and how to put music out with little budget too, in under 20 minutes.
If you're releasing music, building a fanbase or about to release a single/album, then this is the video for you.

👇 ABOUT ME:
Hey! I’m Damian Keyes and I've worked with musicians every day of my life for the past 20 years. The internet is de ply untrusting understandably and here is my background so you can have the full picture.
When I was 18, I was signed to a major label and at 23 I co-founded a Music University in Europe called BIMM (valued at $300M). I’m also a bass player, I’ve played for a number of artists including Eric Clapton, Alanis Morrisette and Billy Cobham. I initially retired at 30, but realised that life gets boring if you’re not building!
I have always been in-between the music industry and education which is how I ended up building my KZread channel - I’ve been teaching artists how to release music long before it was a ‘niche’! I now educate artists around the world with my Academy, KZread channel and Social Agency.
It’s great to meet you and looking forward to working together on your music!

This really hits home, as I’m going through a rough time with having no place to stay and being confused. Thank you for bringing this new perspective on music as an asset, I appreciate it.

Hey I loved this comment, how artists understand their fanbase demographic is something I've been thinking about a lot lately. I’m doing some research on how artists might be able to do this easier. I’d love to buy you some lunch over a phone call to talk more about this!
I was signed to a major label in Aus in the early 2000's. I'm now over 50 and re-emerging from my doomsday prepping cocoon ( being housed, debt free and off-grid with wife and kids). Blown away by the clarity of your communication and strategy. I am using it now and will follow your advice and instruction. Thank you Damian, you really addressed my fears and showed me that appropriate action well directed is better than over-think. Much Love brother.

@@DamianKeyes Thanks Damian. Listened to you interviewed on a podcast last night - The Music Industry Podcast. I'm painting today for money but gunna take pen and paper and write down the 'insights' that really jumped at me. You really are very good at what you do so thanks. When I know what my brand is - I'll reach out.
Cool trick for live gigs, have a QR code for your website/instagram page/yt channel etc (should only be one qr tho) printed on a massive poster, and instead of telling the audience to type in a bunch of shite they can just scan it instantly
The first time i said to myself “use the music” i was around 13 years old. Said it with all the innocence, merely meaning that music can make me happy so i should “use it” whenever i need a boost. 30 years later, as an indie electronic music producer, it seems i need to apply this to my own music, following your advice. Thanks for that
Wow. Don’t bring attention to the music, gain attention with music. The subtle difference but this changes everything.

Thank you as always Damian for the wicked advice. I just released my debut single a few days ago and have been using your plan and it’s working wonders. If the music is good in the first place though, it’s easier to promote. Nobody wants you to waste their time 🤘🏼🎶
Thanks for this lil eye opened video which is translating the message so well for me as beginner in the artist scene! I wanted to prepare for releasing music (which is already produced) but it's like you said I'm lost and drowning in this social media creator thing to promote myself organically to grow a fanbase. After trying to watch 3 videos for "beginner" which I left after 4 minutes because Its way too bright and depth in the topic, I gave this a try and opened my eyes. That are the basics I looked for. Thats the guideline I can follow to go in depth. In the time I looked the video I get ideas of create content and planning my schedules, like it's opened a lock in my head 😅 I also like the way you teach and explain. Thanks a lot! 🙌💪
Yo your advice in this video is straight gold compound interest at its finest ! I’ve gained little by little ever since I’ve been building my instagram up that builds around my personality. You connected everything on the dot man !

Hi Damian, you motivated me to prepare and schedule the release of my first album, rather than just publishing single by single and hope that someone listens to it. So, I need to create a few more tracks and the release my album in December, hopefully reaching a few people who'll enjoy my music.

Watch out! If you release a single then you have a 50% chance of qualifying for content ID BUT the percentage chance drops when you release an album. A distributor doesn't care, if one song no qualify? That means the others don't either.
@ItsZyloh

A lot of people would argue that for small artists trying to make it releasing 10 tracks consistently (one every week or every 10 days) is more efficient than going black ops for a month or so then appearing with a whole album. If someone’s never heard of you, what’s going to motivate them to listen to a whole album of yours? A single however, they might take a chance on.
Thanks! So usefull!!! I am learning so much from you!

Very valuable information. Thanks for sharing! 🙌
This is really good advice. As I’m getting closer to record music and start building a fan base, this is exactly what I needed to hear. I have to focus more time on content and cleaning up my old social media content so fans I’m looking for know how serious I am about this. I have so many songs written that I’m well enough to start recording but the content is what I needed to hear. I never really put that much tho into it but it makes sense. How am I supposed to put music out with no fan base from content? Damian if you read this, (question) is it better to start off with cover songs because I’m about to purchase my licenses, I know one is sync and forgot what the other one is called. Or do you think it’s better to release fresh new music? Love to hear your feedback. Thank you for you video’s, as the holidays have kept me very busy at work that I have to catch up on your video’s.
Thanks for making this video

I am learning so much from you Damian, and for that I'm super grateful! Just wanted to comment, as someone who has been making music for 15 years, I sometimes still feel like I am always at the start, like the "beginning" of the journey never takes off, if that makes sense. Like a plane perpetually speeding on the runway - it just never takes off.

yes, 17 years here and I feel the same. time and time again I reset, research, restore myself and keep going. At every turn it feels like we have better tools but somehow still lack that big break exposure. It's hard to keep optimistic when the landscape and climate keeps changing, but I also know that change is to be embraced. Your analogy is spot on. Wishing you the ability to happily keep going.

May I give you some feedback. You should use the KZread feature where in your description you put chapters. For example each topic in your video that you discussed get it on chapter. I think this will be very useful for musicians when they wanna refer back to this video. Just to refer back to a certain point brother and having to listen to the entire video. Just my opinion but either way your videos are great keep it up Damien

Great video!
Can you share your lighting set up and gear 😊 everything looks so crisp and clear!
How would you go about using this strategy of music > attention > fanbase > music etc., and using the 3-4 weeks to build up towards the release day if you haven't released any music before it? Would it be a case of using snippets of the album in social media content to promote its future release date?
Good stuff as always Damien!

Hey Damian! As usual, lots of valuable data in your video, thanks! The ONE thing I think your are off here is the idea of building your fanbase in Social Media as it were yours because ITS NOT. A couple of months ago, due to the big past data breach to Meta, my FB and IG account were disabled and all of its content deleted (12 years of content). Appellations leaded by robots and no human able to be reached. I've just wrote a quite long blog post about Digital Identity in case you want to dive deeper. Best!

In the art world, so much of the marketing advice is about collecting emails for the very reason you state... That fans in social media are tied to that platform. If it goes belly up, you're screwed. In art, it's easier to give something away in exchange for that email address, like a short free lesson. Music is a little trickier.
It seems challenging to attract attention when you start posting. Thank you for your helpful tips; I will definitely put them to use! 👍
That's the same story as mine ❤️ thanks for sharing

Ahhh dude welcome welcome!!
Always good advice. 😊
Always quality content
Since touring is back in full force around the world, how would you factor in playing live shows into a release schedule for a brand new band/artist? If you're releasing new singles every 4-6 weeks how important is it for the audience to be familiar with more than 1 or 2 songs versus 10+ songs? Would it be a mistake to only promote your music to people who are in cities that you'd want to perform in or would you go more broad and run ads to entire countries like people do who are pushing for Spotify plays and playlist placements? What do you think is the best strategy? Thanks Damo!
Great Video !!!
thank you very much.

Thank you so much for breaking all this down. I released my first single a week ago and have been treading water since… would you have a dedicated fb page and not a personal one? Thanks again
