Idk what my top 40 would be but black dahlia murder is definitely in there somewhere. Brilliant band with almost 2 decades of every album (and damn near every song honestly) being an absolute banger. They just don’t miss.

I'd just call it Alternative Metalcore instead of Nu-Metalcore just cuz I associate Nu with Rapping. And then I'd add in one more after called Post-Metalcore, which is basically Alternative Metalcore but with progressive & atmospheric elements

I enjoy both eras and I do agree that Alissa's lyrics can be kind of blatantly cringe at times, but Prisoners is probably still my favorite. It just has a sound that is really unique and I kind of enjoy the eclectlic lyrics. I also really enjoy Alissa's screaming technique. It kind of reminds me of The Sound of Perseverance, in that you can actually hear a changing pitch behind the distortion. While I agree that Vicky has a much stronger sounding clean, i kind of enjoy the visceral, kind of unhinged sound that Alissa's cleans have. Overall I would say that Vicky's era was more consistently strong, while the Alissa era had the highest high points, but probably also the lowest lows.

That is a fair assessment. When I was relistening to Prisoners for this review, it was the one I was the least excited to listen to, but I was pleasantly surprised that it was better than I remembered. I hear what you mean with the Death comparison. Those vocals are cool. Though Lullabies will always be my favourite of the Alissa albums.

Alissa's golden era was with the Agonist. Her harsh vocals were more interesting then and the style of the Agonist even managed to incorporate her clean vocals relatively seamlessly. Though yeah, she did sound a bit too whiny at times. Vicky's vocals were frankly not always there, but I do think she shines in moments you showcase here. Now as for comparing Disconnect Me to an At the Gates song, Blinded by Fear is a much more obvious comparison.

''In nature, poisonous creatures will develop bright colors to warn others of their toxicity.'' Same can applied here. I think the reason people often is drawn to these types is because of subconscious patterns due to complexes and issues from their past and childhood. In my opinion Christians were right in a lot of things in terms of what is deemed ''satanic'' and whatnot. This is coming from a person who isn't Christian (as of yet).

I am surprised you've called Vicky's era a vocal upgrade. When I checked the band out several years ago Vicky's extreme vocals just sounded extremely awful: the perfect example is their cover on Take Me To Church where she screams thé line "This is hungry work" with a vocal proficiency of a complete beginner without a technique. But I just watched her vocal playthrough of In Vertigo dated 22.6.2021 and she have learned quite a lot! Now she sounds healthy and skilled! Thank you for reminding me of this band!

  • @whatsinameme5258

To be fair, I was referring to their clean vocals, as far as Vicky being better. And I did address Vicky sounding weird on Five. Maybe I'm just biased because I like her weird screams on the first two records she did, even if they were could be considered amateurish. Metalcore in general seems to feature more imperfect screaming than say normal melodic death metal, in a punkish way that adds some character, yet may be unappealing to some as a result. But yes she is definitely at peak performance on Orphans and Days Before the World Wept.

This is also one of my favorite games. I played both SP and co-op mode like crazy. The multiplayer mode was also fun (“terror is reality”). I’ve always seen DR2 as a great satire. The best character are the psychopaths and they’re intentionally over the top. They make you feel both disgusted but also pity them for their absurd delusions and neuroticisms.

i'm not a fan of metalcore, but i love mathcore. car bomb, frontierer, danza, metchwitch, ion dissonance to name a few. unlike most genres, i think mathcore works especially well for the djent influenced stuff. you'll hear a lot of electronic influence in modern mathcore as well. it's a great genre to incorporate and experiment with different sounds and rhythmic ideas.
