What is Technical Death Metal?

From science nerds to Cosmic Horror, we examine what makes this genre of Technical Metal distinct from other metal styles. I do not own the music, it is for educational and entertainment purposes, as always.

I think the difference between Prog death and tech death is that prog blends classic progressive rock and death metal with more light and shade. Tech death is more like regular death metal taken to the extreme.

I think a good way to distinguish between prog and tech for anything is to differentiate complexity in songwriting/song structure vs complexity in riffs respectively. Overly simplified, prog is the brains while tech is the hands.

I am surprised to see that Deeds of Flesh is not on the video as they do pertain into the cosmic horrors somewhat as a subject in their later albums like the Nucleus album and Portals to Canaan. That would be a wonderful addition to the video itself. I feel like that Deeds of Flesh, Decrepit Birth, and other similar bands helped bring Tech Death into the very same light and mixing some of those classic examples of NY Brutal Death Metal (Suffocation) and Floridian Death Metal (Death, Obituary).

I think that the main difference between techdeath and progdeath is that techdeath can be convenctional in its presentation and more predictable sounding, if it has only harsh vocals, sci-fi transhumanism or alien album covers, complex and fast guitar parts with weird scales or neoclassical passages, relentless drumming and some deathcoreish touches is techdeath. Progdeath on the other side is much more varied and different, with a lot of clean vocal presence, stronger keyboards and external influence, things that you don't see in techdeath unless is proggy.

when I think of tech death I think of stuff like Demilich, Monstrosity, Cryptopsy, Suffocation, Immolation or Deicide's Legion, latest releases of Defeated Sanity and Anal Stabwound are also great but more on the brutal side, I guess I'm not a fan of the neoclassical, cosmic-sounding, Necrophagist inspired bands, like, they are metal, and technical but the music doesn't really feel "death" like older bands and some new bands

@@whatsinameme5258as someone who listens to a lot of Brutal Death Metal, I definitely don’t think it’s a hybrid of any sorts. Brutal Death is kind of predecessor to Tech Death, focusing on more experimental abrasive vocal styles and complex rhythms, but what separates Brutal from Tech is that Brutal Death focuses on abrasive production techniques resulting in a lack of timbre(basically meaning the entire band is playing a percussive role). The entire band adds to the “heaviness” of the track, all playing together to create a wall of textured noise that is unrelenting and uncompromising. I know that it technically isn’t that, but it’s the only way I can describe it. Brutal Death Metal is more underground, and typically adopts the rebellious, unappealing elements in their lyrical themes, titles, album art, etc. Some examples of more underground Brutal Death are bands like Disgorge(California), Condemned, Despondency and Stabbing. Other bands that are of note are Defeated Sanity(who are a mix of Brutal, Tech, and Prog), Italy’s Putridity(my personal favourite, an underrated band that takes every element of Brutal Death to its logical conclusion, some could argue being tech death too) and Anal Stabwound(a one-man project by Nikhil T., and started off as a more traditional Brutal band, before taking the Defeated Sanity route). Disentomb is another band I really like, mixing Brutal Death, Tech Death, and Deathcore, at least with their album Misery. If you want more examples, I recommend checking out the record labels Permeated Records and New Standard Elite.
