What is Hard Rock? (+ Metal n' Roll)

Defining what Hard Rock is, ONCE AND FOR ALL. Just kidding, feel free to debate. Let me know what you think Hard Rock is to you. Also tell me what you think of the term "Metal n' Roll". It's quite a fun style. As usual, I do not own the music, it is used for educational and entertainment purposes, as always.

    well according to the Lego Rock Raiders fan wiki, Hard Rock is the toughest rock type that can be mined. Rock Raiders cannot drill it, and even the Small Digger and Granite Grinder take a very long time to mine it. Only dynamite, the Chrome Crusher's drill, and the most powerful mining lasers can destroy hard rock in a reasonable time. hope that helps 👍

    Most often than not "butt rock" is mostly applied to what is usually called Post-Grunge. So, Three Days Grace, Bush, Breaking Benjamin, Nickelback and the such. Sometimes, bands like Godsmack and Disturbed end up being lumped into the mix.

    I think metal’n’roll is a really good way to describe that sound. I know death’n’roll has been around for awhile (think Entombed and - sigh - Six Feet Under), but I’ve never heard of a general term like metal’n’roll. Side note- I said “sigh” when talking about SFU, but honestly their music wouldn’t be bad if they would just get a new damn vocalist.

    There is one AC/DC song that might be slightly closer to metal. The song The Razors Edge is probably the closest the band has ever gotten to metal. Great video btw. I grew up with old school hard rock, my dad is a huge AC/DC fan, I have probably heard their entire discography by now.

    In my view, the term "Metal'n'roll" is very helpful. The best albums of that genre (that I can think of) are Youthanasia, The Ritual, The Black Album, No More Tears, America's Volume Dealer and every album by the band Freak Kitchen.

    It’s a hard topic, and there’s few principles to remember. 1. A genre can resemble another but still not be part of the genre (perhaps different but similar origins, or so far removed from each other they are distinct but similar) 2. A song can be multiple genres at once 3. Rock & Roll and Rock Music are differentiated by Rock music generally being more serious than the 50’s Googie Flavored almost cartoony rock and roll. That being said, much of Rock music is still big dumb party music like rock & roll. 2000’s Hard Rock may be called Hard Rock, but Hard Rock in my opinion existed from 1964 - early 90s, only to be obliterated by Grunge. Certain Garage songs of the 60s were both garage rock and solidly Hard Rock like You Really Got Me, Satisfaction, and My Generation. These were more mature than normal 50s rock and roll based off their general tone as well as lyrical content. (Mature in the sense that the content had sexual or aggressive connotations, not mature as in a developed or mature world view) But Hard Rock really stands out from regular 60’s Rock with Purple Haze. Hendrix’ marriage of Intense Acid Driven feedback drenched guitar playing combined with the Psych era lyrics was the cocktail that produced the very first heavy song. Not heavy metal, but heavy rock. Every major guitar player after him in the Hard Rock / Heavy Rock space is rightly called a disciple of Hendrix. Hard Rock and Heavy Metal and much Acid Proto Punk all existed in similar spheres as well as within each other for the late 60’s into the mid to late 70’s. So plenty of Proto Punk, and even Black Sabbath songs are perhaps not very Metal but Hard Rock!!! (Like Paranoid!) The splits in all different directions really begin to become prominent with the NWOBHM and the extremely abrupt arrival of Punk. Hard Rock makes itself different from these two genres though by keeping its debauched, fun, sex and drug elements from the 60s Acid rock with none of the reflection and lyricism of Heavy Metal, and generally more fully produced and even orchestrated than Punk Rock.

    It's ok to use the "Proto-Metal" label when it comes to explaining the origin of Metal, but not to define the sound of a band, because the term "Proto" only makes sense in relation to the time period from where the band came out and whatever other bands decided to do with that sound later on. For example, judging by the sound and style alone, Led Zeppelin is definitely Hard Rock, they clearly intended to make rock music only that turned out to be harder. AC/DC did the same thing, a harder type of rock, but the only difference is that Metal was already established, therefor nobody would consider them "Proto-Metal" even if they sound exactly as Led Zeppelin. That's why I'm not a fan of labeling a band as "Proto-Anything".

    To me, the best example of 'hard rock' in the context of the 21st century would be 'Breaking Benjamin'. Their music hits a certain sweet spot for the heaviness that makes them accessible to non-metal fans and metal fans alike. For instance, their music has the energy of nu-metal bands like Linkin Park and System of a Down as the themes of their music tend to be dark and introspective without feeling too melancholy and they tend to be fun to listen to because of the catchy choruses and simple but effective instrumentation. However, I still believe that Breaking Benjamin is a lot more edgy and heavy than the other bands I mentioned because of the implementation of harsh vocals in many of their songs. For instance, songs like Diary of Jane, Sugarcoat, and Red Cold River can almost be considered heavy metal songs because of Ben's growling vocals and how they are implemented. When speaking to metalheads, Breaking Benjamin seems to be one of the few bands from the 2000s that they actually enjoy as opposed to a lot of the other bands from that era. Furthermore, people who usually don't like metal also enjoy the band because of the melodic and accessible aspect of Ben's voice, the grooves, and the overall slick pop-centric production of their songs.

    to me, Hard Rock is distinct from metal by STRICLY being Blues, but reduced to it's rhythmic components. Take, let's say, Chuck Berry, remove most of it's improvisation, increase the focus on the riff, and you get AC/DC and so on. Metal, while based on Blues ( at least in it's traditional form) often deviates from the Blues scale and it's traditional 12-measure structure. It often uses entirely different scales ( often rooted in classical music, or it removes scales alltogether for an atonal approach) , (usually) removes all improvisation and is structured differently ( either verse-chorus-verse or like classical music using a Leitmotif).

    I think a good way to think of this is that rock and metal are just tiers of hardness. Hard rock is harder than soft rock, metal is harder than hard rock, etc. So I think a great term for metal n roll can be called mineral music.

  • @MegaMicah12
    @MegaMicah1210 ай бұрын

    Yeah, I think I will start using the term Metal n' Roll now too, as it helps to categorize what exactly modern "Hard Rock" is. As for any other bands that didn't get mentioned... *Seether* is the other big one I know of, while *Gradience* is a local act who also would fall under this label, being Garage Metal n' Roll.

    I think that Metal N Roll was invented with Paranoid (Black Sabbath), evolved with Killing Machine and British Steel (Judas Priest) and Balls to the Wall (Accept) and perfected with The Black Album. In my humble opinion, The Black Album is the result of 20 years of evolution of commercial metal albums with a more dark/personal twist.
