A bit late to the party but thanks for the informative explanation! I think from all YT-vids on Olympia this is the most accurate, stressing on time circumstances and Manets approach to realism. Another fact I have however recently learned from a video from French TV Arte, is that Victorine was homosexual, information I have not seen otherwise.

They were celebrating their prosperity, with the occasional, timely reminder of its impermanence. The geographical origin of many of the items was to celebrate free trade - Capitalism. And remember, history shows Capitalism (and the Industrial Revolution) inherited slavery, and immediately began to eliminate it.

Thank you for your great information on the spoils of war. Indeed, Napoleon Bonaparte was a master at it. The Louvre is today the repository of his actions.🏦

What is the name/artist of the painting at timestamp 10:14 depicting the black woman washing the back of a white woman? I did a Google reverse image search and cannot locate any info about it. Thanks.

Oh that was wonderful! Great job! I do have a bit of extra knowledge that you may be interested in… W. Kalf was an antique dealer and some of his objects such as the Nautilus Cups come from the Russian Tsars. Also, the artists used different properties such as one metal, one ceramic, two organic, two glass, one cloth, etc. and they accentuated These properties to show their ability to paint. Your information was terrific. Btw, it’s still lifes, not lives. No big deal. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

YOu did a really fantastic job with this video. I honestly wasn't that interested in the black maid, but you did a fantastic job telling that story as well - without going full social justice like most others.

This is great! So much important information and framing of the issues from a progressive perspective. It’s refreshing to see, since so many of the tours and tourist info only focus on the “greatness” of the male figures depicted and not really on the displacement of an important female figure.

Ms. Lewis' works are gorgeously rendered in delightful detail. I purchased the new 58-cent stamp honoring her yesterday. I'm now doing some research on USPS' newest Black Heritage honoree - considering it no longer provides narrative info on its subjects on the back of its stamp sheets...
