Portrait of a Black Woman by Marie Guillemine Benoist

One of the best known portraits in the history of European art, Marie-Guillemine Benoist’s Portrait of a Black Woman was created at a time when the so-called “black” skin was becoming a marker for racial difference for Africans in European culture. What did this unprecedented portrayal of a formerly enslaved woman from Guadeloupe mean for European viewers in 1800?     how silly . what makes you think that ??? is there a chinese or a latina mona lisa as well as long as they sit for a portrait? let alone the fact that this black lady is far more beautiful than the overrated mona lisa

    Very well done. Thank you. This has always been a favorite painting of mine. I am not a fan of Beyonce or Jay-Z. I would hope you would find more astute examples other than these two .
