I remember as a kid going to Edinburgh castle where they had a genuine long sword from medieval times. They had it laying down horizontally on a table, that thing was heavy at 1st but once you have it vertically or use the weight of the sword to manoeuvre it around it was quite light. This video was awesome but I could see the speed tho not much really slowing down with each weight class…not that I would of mattered still swung at speed with the bonus momentum behind it, definitely messing up someone’s day 😅

I have a 2 handed bastard and I will testify that you cannot block it. When a wielder knows how to move that much steel, you have to wait for him to overcommit to an attack to get inside.

Right, but are the steel greatswords recreations or antiques? There have been lots of progress in blacksmithing and material science since the medieval era. A lot of the weapons, and therefore their moveset, in games are meant to be made with the techniques and scientific understanding of that period. That's how I think about it, at least.

Modern and historical steel varies in composition somewhat, but that doesn't affect the weight in any significant way. The reproductions I use here are indeed reproductions, but very similar in weight to originals. Only very recently the auction house Hermann Historica sold a greatsword that is 1.74 m long and weighing only 2.3 kg, being very similar to one of the steel ones I use here.

Against light metal armor (like chainmail) 3/5 are most likely grazing hits, 1/5 are moderate bleeding and 1/5 are severing limbs. Against something like leather 4/5 of those are most likely fatal wounds. A very powerful weapon, but it would be a challenge to avoid attacking an ally on accident. I'd go for a shield and one handed weapon with a hand guard. Watch them fingers!

Compared to swords that are not great, as well as weapons of comparable length like staves, quarterstaffs, and polearm type weapons, great swords are slow and cumbersome because they require a large space to cut appropriately and clear footing for the large movements of the blade dancer. However, this video is trying to make a point and I get it. With comparable skills, a great sword wielder will not be that much slower than other weapons, and fearing a greatsword's reach while underestimating how quickly the user can utilize that reach has quickly ended many duels. Where most of the dismissive tone comes from is military commanders because getting people to stand and do things in a group, and also deciding how they should stand and what they should do, is a fundamental problem of human cooperation and conflict. The classic era impenetrable wall of spears and shields basically becoming a people tank. Spears are great because they do one specific thing really well, stab forward at various heights with reasonable power from one arm that doesn't require a lot of movement from the user. In an individual fight this can be somewhat limited, but in a formation it is a wall of precise and sharp death. And that formation can be "tight" (people can stand and fight relatively close together), which means the formation itself is more maneuverable and flexible. So from my understanding greatswords were pretty much never used on the battlefield by professional soldiers, but they were very commonly used as dueling weapons for the spectacle (sword sumo) and as occasional personal guard or Man-at-Arms types (professional warriors for hire, more classy than mercenaries but much more independent than soldiers or knights) weapons for the intimidation factor as well as suffering less from being outnumbered and surrounded because of the greatsword's long reach and cutting potential. They're also great for ceremonies and as badges of office or honor.
@VirtualFechtschule11 сағат бұрын
Yeah, you pretty much got it. One minor addition: greatswords were often used within pike formations, but then they'd most likely be used as a halberd until you'd either get in the middle of a broken enemy formation or until you'd have to cover your own retreat. Alternatively, it does seem they were also sometimes used to break a pike stalemate, when both sides' pike would get tangled up.
@user-cb8mq8ow6b16 сағат бұрын
yeah but he's just abusing the laws of physics, specifically momentum. You can see he is always walking into the next movement before the sword is going that way. This absolutely doesn't mean he'd be able to move the sword like this in a split second and react to quick movements.

Imagine if somebody has a net of sort and they could trap and tangle all their pikes together to essentially disarm the pikes so their cavalry could move in. With the right knots you could even tighten this net. I can't be the first person to think of this, is there any wiser historians that know if anything like this was used

It must require quite a bit of stamina to control the space like that for any extended length of time. On the field, slow and cumbersome would only be a question of time. I appreciate the point you're making, but I'd still stick with a good spear. Or broadsword and buckler. And stay away from the whirling dervish until he's knackered. 😅
