When Longsword Fencers do Armoured Fighting

Спорт

Hello everyone! This is another video made from footage I had been sitting on for some time. It's a few rounds of armoured fencing with longswords and it's pretty cool, because I get to show off how I transformed my armour into something that's fully suited to full contact fighting as well as doing a few rounds with people that aren't afraid to snipe my legs if I let them. :D

Honest question here. If your opponent is unarmored, why would you assume to halfsword against them? Keeping distance and using the hews against their more vulnerable targets seems to be a huge advantage. The unarmored fencer seems to need to close and halfsword while someone in harness can use the point and edge at range. Also, great video and content as usual!!

The opponents are wearing notional half armor, as said near the end of the introduction.

Coming from place of genuine ignorance here. These exchanges very much resemble short polearm stuff, including techniques, yes?

Several of the basic techniques are pretty much the same. In terms of similarities, poleax/ halbard and greatsword/large long swords have very similar motions.

Interesting video. I do wonder what the outcomes could be if an unarmored swordsman would grapple more. Since it can be challenge to fight at range because lack of available targets he often were forced to halfsword. What if instead he'd literally drop his sword after blocking initial hit (or just use it as leverage if needed) and rush to try get half armored fencer to the ground? At my school guys do grapple quite a lot, but mostly for fun, and from observing I noticed that the extra weight can be both advantage and disadvantage. I do really wonder what outcome would be in that case. Maybe one day I'll be able to test it out

In that case sword makes excellent improvised pike/boarspear. Even if you get into a grapple, landing solid close quarters hits is harder on someone wearing armor than not.
