Fighting in Landsknecht Armour: halfsword

Спорт

Hey all! Speaking of projects that needed finishing: here's some stuff I did last july. I wanted to find out to what extent halfsword would be a good way to defeat infantry half armour of the early 16th century, and it turns out it's super effective! :)

Do you think someone in full harness would engage someone in half-armor primarily with halfswording, or would they just try to strike at the legs and gaps holding the sword normally? Seriously awesome stuff. Really enjoying the Landsknecht armor videos!

Good question! Since switching between longs sword and half sword is relatively quick and easy once you get used to it, I would suspect someone in full armour would first try to snipe easy openings, but once their opponent defends them or tanks them with their armour, it would quickly become halfswording. That said, even in blossfechten, you end up in halfsword way more often if judges don't stop you after the first hit, so I think going to halfswording would be more common than we see now anyway. :)

Half-armor seems good enough for protecting your most vulnerable targets (hands/arms), and your most vital targets (top of head and your breast). Taking those targets completely out of the equation gives the attacker much less options, and the defender requires much less caution in defending every part of their body. If you know you can only be attacked in the armpit, throat, face, and legs, then you only need to defend the armpit, throat, face, and legs. You can ignore threats to the protected areas, thus granting you more offensive opportunities (striking as you are struck upon the armor). Also a manageable weight for marching long distances

I see a lot of potential in this for realistic film choreography in half armour. I.e. starting at long sword range for a range advantage and hoping for a lucky stab or cut into a gap, before closing and transitioning to half sword, as you've done fantastically here. The artistry and flow of half-swording is very underrated, as you've shown. While it can sometimes get a bit fiddly, you could use the fiddly bits sparingly on film. And if it's choreographed, you could throw in some moves that are less safe for sparring to spice it up, like a pommel strike or two or punching with the quillions. In the end, you could come up with a very action-packed but realistic armoured fighting scene. Ps. No mordhaus, because they're very silly! ;)

You totally should. It's really great for contextualising what we do with blossfechten as well.

What would be interesting (if possible) would be fighting small group against small group. It may help with insight on how to exploit weaknesses or see the different strengths these mercenaries had as a group.

Yeah! I have done some experimentation with group combat, and it just gets super messy and deadly without the armour (because everyone 'dies' from every small hit), while when assuming even light infantry armour the group combat becomes way more interesting.

Although my harness is a little earlier than yours, I’ve done very similar sparring experiments quite a lot with partial harness. I’ve come to some very similar conclusions as you. I also have found over the years that blending bloßfechten and harnisfechten sparring had made using shortened sword techniques far more intuitive when sparring without armor.

Yeah. I feel the ability to switch is severely underrated, even in blossfechten. There's plenty of times when some harnischfechten techniques saved my ass during an awkward grapple. :D
