Jay Wanders Out

Jay Wanders Out

I had the corporate IT job day after day but it wasn't fulfilling. After finding out about solo long distance backpacking I decided to go on a lot of long backpacking trips and otherwise live out of my converted 4Runner. Driving around this great country and see everything I feel like seeing, mostly outdoor activities, is what I really wanted to do.
In 2018 I thru hiked the Pacific Crest Trail, in 2019 I thru hiked the Wonderland Trail, in 2021 I thru hiked the Arizona Trail, and now in 2022 I will be thru hiking the Appalachian Trail.
Please join me as I spend the rest of my life exploring this great country!

Any support always appreciated!

    For someone with a lot of hiking experience you seem shockingly unprepared for hiking in the artic. No pants, 50° bag, no puffy. You have crossed the line into dangerously moronic.

    You got to see a lot of side trip Glacier fronts that I did not see which were very beautiful. I kayaked from Valdez to Whittier and as a side trip we paddled into Columbia Glacier for which I was shocked at how much receding had taken place. You got some nice time with the sea lions which is nice, we did not see that, and that was probably good as they can be a bit silly and not shy and you don’t want to go for a cold swim with a sea lion. I had one spit water at me once but fortunately he did not slam the kayak. You had a nice trip there, good choice.

    I guess the stellars sea lions are an endangered species so are normally as common. We learned that they were very rare in the area but in recent years have been settling in and biologists are keeping an eye on them.

    According to geologist, Columbia Glacier is one of the fastest retreating glaciers in the world , over 1/3 mile every year since 1982 presenting a loss of over 9 miles.

    It's been pretty nice! If you're into fishing at all this is a fisherman's paradise. Just having the chance to catch red salmon and eat them fresh is amazing. I think I've ruined salmon eating in the lower 48 from now on.

    While not as popular to catch and eat as the other salmon species in Alaska, locals do take the pink salmon. I’m not sure about the Chum species. Where I fish I am not aware of a Chum run.

  • @JayWandersOut
    @JayWandersOut19 минут бұрын

    We're looking forward to pink salmon season as well. Supposedly they're still really good when they're nice and silver and not too late into the run. Chum though we haven't heard anybody talk about catching so we'll skip them. After all silvers will be coming soon as well and we can only eat so much salmon. Red numbers are still going up on the Kasilof and Kenai Rivers so we'll try again tomorrow for some more.

    Reverse the male / female connectors on the rear packing strap to that it can clip into the front strap on the same side of the boat. Voila, carry handle on both sides and the straps don't drag in the water.

    Hi Jay and Tina …. How do they keep the roads so dry and clear if there’s snow melting all the time

  • @JayWandersOut
    @JayWandersOut17 минут бұрын

    They have an absolute ton of huge culverts that go below the roads. Some of the culverts are so large I'm sure I can drive through them and one place we saw had 2 of them. The civil engineers here really did a great job designing them.

    thank you for your Oru Kayak review - it was very accurate, I appreciate the many tips you give towards the end of your review. I luke the way it assembles quickly -no confusion, very intuitive. It’s a bit tough and I had to put my entire body into making the folds happen but it’s worth it to be able to have the one of the lightest kayaks on the market. Been waiting a few years to see something like this, now it’s here!

  • @JayWandersOut
    @JayWandersOut16 минут бұрын

    The folds get much easier after the first few times so it'll become even more enjoyable. I'm back to my 35lb folding kayak and I agree, that 17 pounds is amazing. I miss that portability.

    Did you notice if most gas stations also sell diesel? As always, your videography and editing are outstanding!

  • @JayWandersOut

    Yes, they almost all sell diesel especially due to all the trucks out here. Believe it or not right now gas prices here are cheaper or about the same as in the Chicago suburbs so it's not so bad.

    I own two of these, 5' each with side shades. I love it. BUT what he's doing is using a suction cup. I used the hardware provided and the key with that is that you can have 3 different angles. If you are worried about water run off, you angle it down. It's super easy to do. I used to attach it to my cross bars but now I have a platform rack that I use and it works the same. I think it varies by 15 degrees. I use it at the dog park, in hot parking lots, camping, etc. It's awesome and high quality. I highly recommend it. I do wish they had an annex, not just a side shade, but seriously it's fantastic. I've camped in 30 mph winds and this has stayed up. I'm nervous so I use the kammok poles in those conditions and I stake down the sunshade but no problem. Shocking I know, but it worked more than once in these winds. I've used it all last summer and this summer twice so far and I can only recommend it. Ps - the hardware is so good I ordered extra and used it to attach my joolca single shower suite that had completely useless hardware and worse advice (basically go on fb and ask for help) so I used my spare kammok hardware (I ordered hardware not knowing it came with hardware) - thank you kammok! saved the day! I ordered last year 2023. And I ordered refurbished so $500 ish each and what a deal. It's worth full price but I bought it from them refurbished (demo in store?) and no damage visible and a great deal.

    Absurd cost and poor features for those tents. Each tent has the trekking pole at the center of the entrance limiting accessibility. None of the tents has a loop at it's peak for supporting the tents from above by more than 9 different hanging methods, particularly for those who don't care to use or carry tent poles/trekking poles. The Plexamid lacks an entry/exit waterproof zipper. I've seen a KZread video where a strong wind flapped the heck out of the tent limiiting sleep and had it rained or snowed the conclusion is obvious. All tents lack a hooded vent for reducing internal condensation. At least the Gossamer One tent is reasonably priced. I have three DIY Dyneema floorless tents. My 4.05 ounce one person tent is 4 ft W x 8.5 ft L x 3.5 ft H. My 4.7 ounce DIY Dyneema floorless tent is 4.4 ft W x 9.15 ft L x 3.5 ft H. My two person 6.32 ounce DIY Dyneema floorless tent is 5 ft W x 9.0 ft L x 4.4 ft W at both ends x 3.74 ft H. Each of my tents has a waterproof entry/exit zipper and hooded vent w/waterproof zipper and mosquito netting, A loop is at the peak for hanging from above or pole interior/exterior and all glue construction. No floor for maximum flexibility of selecting per trip what material and amount of surface area for a ground sheet or an inexpensive netted interior tent or other mosquito proof solution vs the expensive included netted interior tents provided by the manufacturers. One could make their own tent or tarp shelter by designing and making their own with Dyneema material .

    Thanks i need to upgrade my setup too im drifting through the United States working overnight for amazon anywhos imma buy one of their fancy foldy panels because I have an expensive goal zero but it's the nomad 10 and that's like nothing it trickle charges a battery and maybe charges my phone if I left it there all day. Just overall too much panel and not enough watts for me. Edit Thats like an emergency panel i guess. It can charge a battery pack or flashlight all day and that's cool but besides very small devices its pretty useless no iPhones no battery packs larger than 10,000mah because it takes forever to charge one.

    Thanks for sharing your adventure on the McCarthy Road and Root Glacier. Four days after your drive (June 02), a small earthquake broke the McCarthy Road just east of Chitina. That break delayed our van excursion by an hour on the outbound in the morning. On the return trip, our experienced driver left the van on the eastern side of the break, we walked carefully through the broken pavement, and another van spirited us late to our lodge. It took several days for the road to open fully. Here's hoping that the unsettled Alaskan landscape treated you good folks well.
