Hiking Zion National Park - Part 1 of 2

It's another Utah National Park that I haven't visited yet, Zion National Park. I got a camp site at the campground within the park so let's head in and hike some trails. Unfortunately Angels Landing is on a permit system so I'll just have to apply the day before each day and wish for the best.
Believe it or not Zion National Park is the 3rd most visited park but because it's so much smaller than many of the other national parks it's the busiest national park. Get ready for the crowds even in late March.

When we visited several summers ago, we entered the park around 6:30 in the morning. There was basically no line at the gate and we got a parking spot at the visitor center lot. It's crazy how busy it gets later in the morning. I was shocked.

Your videos are always enjoyable to watch. It's a beautiful park. The crowds I would not like. I wonder how Jay felt. 🌻👣

I never minded the crowds. It's the "I'll do what I want" people that really rile me up and with more people there are more people doing whatever they want like walking and climbing everywhere, feeding animals, stuff like that.

Even if you don't get the permit for Angel's Landing you can take the Angel's Landing trail to Scouts lookout and get some incredible views or hike along further along the west rim trail from Scouts lookout.

Zion is absolutely beautiful. I haven’t been there since I was 16. Hopefully I can get out there again soon!

Hope that you scored the Angel’s Landing ticket, Jay. It is something not to be missed. Oddly I hiked it 30 years ago… no ticket required, no shuttle busses, no people. Oh well.

My son and I did The Narrows and Angels Landing 2018 in July before the permit requirement was implemented post COVID. Also hiked overnight along the West Rim trail (dropped our packs and did Angels Landing near the end of that hike). You need a permit for Wilderness area hike that the West Rim trail passes through. Also have to use WAG bags. I think that trail and possibly some more obscure ones of the park are the only places you’ll find solitude in Zion.

We drove in through the east entrance back in March, 2019. Stunning drive coming into the park, the tunnel and switch backs had amazing views. We rented the water proof pants, shoes and hiking stick from a near by outfitter, hiking the Narrows was on my bucket list and it didn’t disappoint. Stunning hike and water wasn’t too bad but I am from New England so use to cold water. I never could do Angels Landing due to fear of heights. The park was not that crowded 5 years ago, crazy amount of people.

Definitely still go to Scouts Lookout if you dont get the pass to go all the way up to Angels Landing. I think many people dont realize you can do this because there's a ranger checkpoint at the beginning of the trail. The ranger only checks for the Angels Landing pass. If you're not going all the way up there, you can just walk by and bypass the ranger checkpoint. The 2nd ranger checkpoint is at Scouts Lookout where Angels Landing actually starts.

Wire keeps the horses from chewing the post. They’ll eat the top board of a wooden fence to the point the boards become weak and have to be replaced.

Amazing that it is so busy in March. I was there in April back in 1981 and while there were lots of buses of highschool kids, it was not that busy. Now, walking on the treadmill along with your video. Thanks.

I forgot to mention a huge blinking sign that said "Visitor Center Parking Full" but there were spots. I think it was a clever salesman making people think "This spot is better than nothing."

The wire on the horse post is probably to prevent them from chewing, which they often do. Also, parking for NFL games can be $40 or more!
