Visiting Seward and Fishing For Red Salmon

We heard that the red salmon numbers were good in Seward so we headed that way to make our first attempt at salmon fishing. Lucky for us we were reasonably successful and had plenty of time to explore the nearby areas as well. Seward, much like Valdez, is surrounded by snow capped mountains and absolutely beautiful. Lucky for us it had plenty of red salmon, or also called sockeye salmon!

You caught it on a slow day. There's times it gets so crowded it'll literally be elbow to elbow people fishing.

We took it slow and took almost a month through Canada. We also went to McCarthy then Valdez before getting to Seward and took plenty of time. If you really wanted to you can get to places pretty quickly overall.

Not sure when or where you’re going but.. Have you tried you hand at halibut fishing? I brought home over 100 pounds of halibut fillets and 35 pounds of salmon fillets. I was in Homer but I’m sure they catch halibut there.

Our car has a 20L fridge and no freezer so besides mailing fish home there was no other way to bring extra meat home. Also we're on a budget so no charters for us. Generally we can keep 2 salmon maybe 3 if they're small at once then run off somewhere and do other things while we eat salmon every day. There was one spot in Homer with good shore fishing for smaller halibut but we really like our salmon.
