The Full Review of The Oru Lake Sport Folding Kayak

What are my thoughts about the Oru Lake Sport? After almost two whole months in Florida and using it all over and putting it to its limits it's time to share with you my honest opinion about this kayak. I go through all the pros and cons of the kayak and suggest some ways to make it better. They have not in any way attempted to sway my opinion and I am not an affiliate with their products.
Oru did lend me the kayak in order to make a review and I will be mailing everything back to them soon. Even without the review I will admit their marketing is smart because a LOT of people asked me all about the kayak and almost all of them have never seen one in person. By me being out there with this kayak Oru basically allowed for many people to get their hands on their product and influence potential sales.

Reverse the male / female connectors on the rear packing strap to that it can clip into the front strap on the same side of the boat. Voila, carry handle on both sides and the straps don't drag in the water.

Jay this is such a fair review. I have two of these kayaks, the inlet and Bay St. I used the Bay St. on the Missouri River last summer and it was perfect for camping. You can add a skirt which was very useful for preventing sunburn. I use the Inlet when I go paddling with my dog. I share your concern about transferring invasive species due to trapped water. I have a hook on my porch where I hang the kayak to dry. I’m an older person and Oru is light and easy to transport which opens up adventure on the water for me. It’s a terrific kayak which tracks beautifully. However, the cons you mentioned are accurate. I treat mine gently and so far it’s holding up and lots of fun.😊

Nice thorough review. For a lake, seems you would like the kayak to not pivot as harshly as this does, but where you used this boat it was perfect because of close quarters, it would seem to afford you to spin the boat upstream, paddle against current to fairy the boat to the right or left to avoid sweepers. My Klepper Aerius II is 85-90 pounds, and takes a short 35 minutes to build or tare down , that’s if I can remember where all the parts go. My Klepper is a late 1950’s boat I am guessing, but it’s the safest boat for sea kayaking. Two people have made a total of three transatlantic crossings trips in them. I trashed my river kayak wrapping it around a giant rock. I had a Pacific Water Sports “Sea Otter” Kayak that I did the Alaska’s Inside Passage in once. Sold it while going back to school . Sea Kayak camping in an Alaska is remote and a wonderful experience.

My Tucktec is about 28lbs and I didn't think it was that much more but I really feel compared to carrying the Oru around. The Oru did a great job with their handles as well.

Incredibly detailed review! Outstanding since I'm in the market for my first kayak. Thank you! I'll be watching your comparison with the Tucktec. One thing, what did you do with the padded seat after folding everything up?

The smaller seat that comes with the kayak can fit inside the orange seat assembly. The thicker one just has to getting carried along extra. It definitely won't fit inside when you fold it.

@@JayWandersOut got it, thank you! I purchased the Lake Sport day before yesterday since they’re having a fantastic Memorial sale and the cherry on top was that it came with a free paddle!! I also scooped up the carry bag thanks to your recommendation. It ended up cheaper than getting a bundle. It already arrives today too!! I probably should have got the gel seat too. I’m probably going to go back in and get it due to the sale plus they sent me an addition percentage off accessories. Win!! Thanks again for your stellar review, much appreciated.

@hipgeek73 Thanks! I hope you enjoy it. I had a blast with that thing and I'm glad you got the sport. It's worth it for the upgraded parts and it's definitely more comfortable with the adjustable back and foot rests.

thank you for your Oru Kayak review - it was very accurate, I appreciate the many tips you give towards the end of your review. I luke the way it assembles quickly -no confusion, very intuitive. It’s a bit tough and I had to put my entire body into making the folds happen but it’s worth it to be able to have the one of the lightest kayaks on the market. Been waiting a few years to see something like this, now it’s here!

The folds get much easier after the first few times so it'll become even more enjoyable. I'm back to my 35lb folding kayak and I agree, that 17 pounds is amazing. I miss that portability.

I own a couple of those. Pretty brave taking those rapids in it. I've stuck to lakes so far. I've got the light kit and the keel add-on. Not sure I could justify the $1200 motor add-on.

They offered to send a motor to test and review but I would never spend that much on it so I said no. I only like to review things I'd actually recommend if it was a good product.

@@JayWandersOut BTW, those rubber feet I think are mainly for keeping the unit slightly off the floor when folded up in storage. I usually bring an old towel along to wipe down my kayak before I fold it up and put it behind my front seat in the car. The only place I could see using a motor is crossing a really wide multi-mile lake or traveling upstream in a deep river. I'd still be wary of wakes from fellow motorboats though. I'm usually on long channel lakes or float-trip style creeks/rivers so I can't justify getting one.

tracking is also an issue, some of my heavier roto molded boats require constant correction, strangely phoenix got the seat in a sweet spot, you stop paddleing the boat it just continues to glide along perfectly straight,

the lighter the kayak the more work to paddle it, crazy huh, because it just stops moveing if you dont keep paddleing, my niece was leasurely paddleing a heavy plastic roto molded aquaterra, i was in an ultra light weight 12 ft composite phoenix poke boat and i worked my butt off to keep up, use your gear to add weight and it wont feel like your rideing on a potato chip

I had a window awning made of simliar plastic with channels in it and I silicone sealed the openings in the ends of the channels. Must be a reason not to do this if the manufacturer doesn't do ti.

If you drive to much higher elevations the air pressure inside will pop the seals. Going west of Denver it gets to 11,300ft on a major highway so that would definitely do it.
