  3,000 acres was Apihai's first gift to establish Auckland. Under pressure from new arriving settlers, Apihai made a second gift of 13,000 acres. Apihai's third and final gift was of 40,000 acres. In less than 10 years Apihai Te Kawau gifted 56,000 acres to the Crown. He was left with 700 acres which caused such personal shame he moved to the west coast till his death. The area of his gift was some 230sq kms. History would say the other 340sq kms of purchases for Auckland city came by a combination of theft, dubious government assisted land purchases, long term(100 year) leases, ownership of land by deception and fraudulent means, MLC assisted alienation of land(s) and title(s), land confiscations from other Iwi/hapu of greater Auckland etc.
