    You’re one of the few channels on KZread that actually goes into the importance of stereo imaging and mastering when it comes to shaping samples so shoutout to you for that. Also I was curious, when it comes to your own production, how do you like to mix your drums? Like do you pay a lot of attention to headroom and process everything through a drum bus or do you just push all that shit into a clipper. I’m curious cuz I’m still trying to figure out what works best for me. Sometimes a drum bus makes it hit harder while other times just pushing everything into a clipper on the master bus works way better. I got a lot of good plugins but sometimes can never seem to get my drums hitting in the way I hear on songs. Idk if I’m just too keen to make everything loud too early on before the mastering stage.

  • @drewgrit_
    @drewgrit_9 күн бұрын

    1) thank you so much, I really appreciate that my friend, too kind! 2) I absolutely LOVE this question haha could talk about this all day We are sort of on the same page actually. When it comes to processing drums I don’t have a set method most of the time because I think it really depends (just like you described). I approach drums from a sort of loose standpoint, I feel like a touch of saturation and gentle compression to bring all the drum parts together to sound cohesive is the only thing that I almost always do. Then it depends, sometimes some tape machine plugins really pushing that analog emulation. Sometimes soft clipping etc but I’m doing that less of the time on my drums than you’d probably expected. I prefer tape driven drums over clipped drums most of the time but that’s just me. But yea essentially no real method because every song is different, drum buss in ableton is cool too but doesn’t always work. So if I was to give any recommendations I’d say just forget about technical stuff like headroom for a short time and just experiment with different stuff to see if you discover and new drum aesthetic you like. Does that make sense my friend? Much appreciated for the sick convo🙏

  • @slackstarfish8133
    @slackstarfish81339 күн бұрын

    @@drewgrit_bet, that definitely makes sense. If I ever had to warn new producers about mixing it’s definitely gotta be that when you add a bunch of shit to your drums to make them “hit harder” it’s because you are literally increasing the DB😂 like you can’t just add a bunch of shit to your drums and have them hitting at 0 db cuz now you got no space for anything else in the mix, and the second you lower the volume it’s not really any louder than it was before. to truly make something louder in the long run, you gotta figure out how to make it sound louder, while maintaining a good DB level. That’s definitely where the challenge of mixing comes in cuz really only years of experience can teach you what you need to know. You could have a drum bus with saturation modes that work great with certain kicks and hi hats but the second you choose some different sounds, they won’t sound right at all. To sum up that tangent, this shit really is all just trial and error😭 I always hoped mixing tutorials on KZread could teach me everything I want to know but it really doesn’t work like that. But when you do keep working at it and it finally pays off, there’s nothing quite as satisfying.

  • @drewgrit_

    @@slackstarfish8133 ah DUDE you just described that PERFECTLY. Better than I could have😂 I fully support everything you just said, you’ve got your head in the right place 1000%. Also side note I’ve heard Decaps knock plugin is good but also that exact style of drum sound isn’t really my vibe but still worth investigating, I’ve heard really good things, Decap is the goat✌️

  • @slackstarfish8133
    @slackstarfish81339 күн бұрын

    @@drewgrit_oh shit i can definitely co-sign that, I actually have that plugin and it’s really good😂 It’s definitely got a certain type of saturation that doesn’t work on all drums but when it works, it does wonders. you can very easily maintain the db levels because it has built in parallel processing abilities and a gain stage button so I use it quite a bit. Also bro I feel like we’re always on the same page when it comes to production. My actual producer channel is prior question if you ever wanna check out some beats or talk about shit like this, I figure I’d mention it. Or if you ever felt like giving feedback, I love to talk about the process with other producers. Anyway, keep up the great videos, I find them great for inspiration and understanding the process🙏

    @@drewgrit_ Yeah I thought you were pretty fair and honest. Nowadays it is a bit awkward to use these things as they get older and current technology moves on. As a musical device that doesn't make them any worse, it just requires a bit more thought on the user's end. I know plenty of young people who still rock the older MPCs so I'm well aware of what you can do with one. I think sometimes people have a very close relationship with their gear if they've been using it for decades and because of that they tend to balk at any kind of feedback that isn't totally positive. That's just my theory anyway. I might be wrong. Anyway looking forward to seeing what you do with it. I saw that organ video. That's really cool. I wanted something similar and even though it was free I couldn't get it due to the sheer size of the thing.

    I had an XL stored away for years. It drowned in a flood 2 years ago. It really hurt me to throw it away. I didn't even bother to see if it still worked or try to fix it. It was soaked. All my shoe boxes full of floppy disks too. I had hundreds of floppy disks labeled & categorized. It was such a grueling, time consuming process. I had notebooks filled with notes & references. It was necessary to find & load sounds faster. I always told myself I would dig it out one day & go through all my old music. Now it's too late. I miss the MPC days.
