    When I first started collecting, it was mostly 45s so I'm always interested. Jonas and 6inchpianist are giving me profound vinyl envy over their latest acquisitions. Thanks for introducing me to Favourite Sons. There aren't many British groups of that era I haven't heard of. And I think Jonas and Harris Pilton are my new favorite vinyl bromance. Great video.

    Found your channel from Vinyl Dood. (I'm a fellow VC content creator / memer nerd) them: "DON'T TELL ME HOW TO LIVE! I HATE RULES!" meanwhile, them: "why do i have no record money? records are soo expensive :(" A wise man once said "your freedom ends where someone else's begins", and of course none of that is going on here. That's your whole point, & you put it so excellently. Collect! Enjoy! We all do that by default, anyway right? However, as an intelligent & better-educated community, it better serves us & others trying to collect- & thus adds to the enjoyment even more - when we can *curate*. Questlove talks a lot about curation, & I highly recommend him. Yeah man. Super appreciate you. Keep on groovin' your way & happy to be a new sub here! -mark

Now that the internet has allowed them to "come out of the basement" and interact with people....and they have NO IDEA HOW!!! The great thing about this musical world is that you are NOT WRONG for how you collect, what you listen to, or how you choose to do it. #4 is interesting- I collect 90’s hip hop, which was released on CD, so the reissues are digitally sourced and often are double or even triple albums due to the amount of tracks contained on CD’s, and the vinyl can be over 50 euros, so why not collect the original CD for a fraction of the price in it’s originally intended format? You can collect 90’s hip hop singles of your favourite track’s although those are much harder to find but I do have fun hunting them Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

  • @vinylstockholm
    @vinylstockholm10 күн бұрын

    Hi Dean, excellent point, that's my thought too. This mostly applies to records from the 90s, when CDs were standard. As you said, the artist started making longer albums, as the CD could hold more minutes, so the vinyl releases are often 2 LPs (and pressed from a digital source). So for me in these cases the original CD is better and much cheaper! Now, I'm just repeating what you said, but I totally agree. Good luck hunting those hiphop singles. Cheers!

    I have the first 7" by Apples In Stereo when they were just The Apples. Nice. Flying Nun, 3Ds..yes to them. I've been working my way through my 45s/7" collection starting in 1950 and going forward. I'm in 1966 now and wow..what a year! Garage and soul! Psych entering the sound. I have thousands of 7" and I'm trying to decrease the number. Doubles, records that I don't need or not great sound quality are going out the door. Many will go to thrift stores and some to a guy who sells 45s of mine and gives me credit and lastly to a generous store that I visit a couple of times a year. I'm a long way from stores so discogs and eBay are my friends.

    I have a radio show on a local university radio station and singles are best for DJing as I don’t have to haul have LP’s or hunt for a track in the middle of side 1 and accidentally play the wrong one, especially hard with coloured vinyl. Singles are fun, I always had a small collection but it has recently grown into about 300, I especially love punk singles and indie rock bands from the 90’s because they were still sending out singles for airplay on radio stations. I get the idea that you (and we) listen to music via different formats, but what is so important about having an original? Would that be an original in your country? Or an original from the artist's home country? Does it have to be a genuine first pressing? Apologies if I missed your explanation (I didn't see your original video, just this second edition), but it seems like you're advocating collecting museum pieces.

    Hi! I'm not advocating anything, I'm just sharing how I collect. I thought I explained quite well in the video why I only buy originals. Great video, lovely to see how sane vinyl enthusiasts collect. Your manifesto is an intelligent way to avoid you collection spiralling out of control. There's no way I could be so steadfast in abiding by rules. I'm a vinyl scavenger by nature. I don't know what I'm going to buy until I see it. Luckily I adhere to some of your rules by default. Many of the records I collect only had one pressing, so I don't have much choice in pressings. Yay! One of my favourite folky country albums from the 70s is by a group called The Flatlanders. The album was originally only released on 8-Track tape. I'm sorry, there's no way I'm seeking that out a good 8-Track player to play one 8-Track tape. Good luck on your quest. Cheers - Hedley

    I should have commented on your previous vid but will do it here. I've no problem with your manifesto, it's your rules. I don't follow all of them but a few are similar to mine. I absolutely buy OGs and don't buy many reissues, one or two a year. To me there are enough OG records out there that I find in the real world that I blow my budget on which means I don't have to consider reissues. I love one trackers (library, OSTs, funky easy listening) but that's the only way to own those tracks. Others have said it here but the VC isn't really made up of Acid Archive/Galactic Ramble folk. They want the latest audiophile pressing or own 4 copies of a 70s AOR etc LP and know the LP inside out. Many would flick past a rare private press in a dollar bin. Not being disrespectful to those collectors, that's just the reality. I bought Acid Archives when the 1st edition came out and only concentrated on buying the cheap recommendations in the back of the book as that was where I was as a collector at that time. Most of us change as collectors over the years. Back in the 90s a VG record was fine but for the last 15 years or so it has to be EX/NM. BTW I noticed Mary-Ann Paterson pop up on your blog. Had the chance to buy an OG of that recently but was not convinced at all, even though the urge to own it was still there due to rarity. I passed it on to a friend instead. Cheers Nige

  • @vinylstockholm

    Hi Nigel. I 100% agree, of course you change as a collector over the years. Like pressings, condition and the type of music you look for. It would be strange to do the same thing over and over, I want to explore and find new (old) music. VC is new to me, so we'll see what happens. I still have the Mary-Anne "Me" LP. Got it a long time ago from Richard Morton Jack actually. It's one of those records that I might sell at some point, there are a few great songs, but I could use it in a trade to get something better. Many thanks for sharing your thoughts. Cheers! /Jonas.

    You really did get quite a bunch of fury on your manifesto! Well, I've started to get some too. As you know, you can account for others tastes in what they do. Just yours. I really like having a set of rules specifically in that it controls your spending and keeps you on focus. Which can be a problem for me. Getting to much, and buying in too many ways means less enjoyment overall A more enjoyment to the records and music you love the most.

  • @vinylstockholm
    @vinylstockholm15 күн бұрын

    Yes, I believe that if your collection gets too big, you kinda loose contact with it. I've said it before, (for me) a healthy record collection is like a breathing organism, record in, records out. And for every breath it gets better and more groovy. Also, it keeps your spending from running wild. Selling and trading is the way forward for me. Good luck with your reissue sale. Cheers!

    Good rules tailored to your personal collection, no doubt. Good for others too probably, as long as you don't take them too literally and pedantically! Just be aware that there are other approaches to collecting very different from your own. Once you seriously start collecting the records of a certain artist you particularly like, for instance, you WILL want later pressings and formats to complement the original, and you WILL want cheapo compilations that have a song of your collecting interest on them. Without "completists" there would be no discographies out there, as you need all the records to write a good one! And then there's historically motivated collecting, like assembling all issues by a certain label in numerical order to learn what they did at the time (a popular pastime with 45s), which WILL bring a lot of music into your house that you don't particularly like, and with it comes the risk of ignoring good music because "it is on the wrong label". In the end, many roads lead to Rome as they say! Any real collecting that is more than ticking off the Record Store Day list every year in the hope that the things raise in price, but is born of a love either for certain music, or a certain product from a bygone era, or both, is worth pursuing in a way that makes your personal life better every day :)

    Though I don't have so many stringent rules I follow when it comes to buying records for my own collection, I do have a life-long goal/project that I'm S-L-O-W-L-Y working towards, in that I want to own a 1st pressing copy, as close to mint as possible, of every record in the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die book. In that goal, the records HAVE to be 1st pressings, that is non-negotiable...as you can imagine I'm achieving this only incredibly slowly, with only around 50 of the records being accumulated so far

    Wow, that's an amazing goal. But as you say, it will take a long time. Good luck with finding all those wonderful records! Thanks for commenting, take care!

    For me it's about the nostalgia artwork and if it's coloured vinyl that's a bonus

    Yes, the artworks are often great! Coloured vinyl is really not my thing though. Thanks for commenting, take care!

    rules are made to be broken when I shop for records 1) do I want it? 2) can I afford it? when those two answers are yes = buy it simple rule many compilations are great never say never enjoy your music

    Those are two really good rules! I know, some compilations are killer. But why take the easy way and buy a compilation when you can work hard to track down 10 singles instead? 😂 Thanks for commenting! Enjoy the music yourself.

    What you do - and why you do it that way - makes 100% total sense to me. I also like a man that knows his own mind. And follows his own rules. Kudos 👍 And you just got another (yes, male) subscriber 😃

    That was great stuff, Jonas. Of course, to each their own like you said. Rules are meant to be personal, not for a group. I am nearly exclusively a collector of originals for many of the same reasons as you. In general, I think everyone should have a manifesto or set of guidelines that informs their buying habits, otherwise you end up buying everything and often listening to nothing. A big 'limiter' for me is space; I have a certain amount of space that I am willing to dedicate to records, so I have to have guidelines, but mostly I enjoy the sounds of the way the album came out originally. I do have a few albums that came out on cassette originally and those are the formats I have hose albums in. Anyway, very enjoyable video and thank you for sharing. Cheers, Tom

    Hi Tom! Sounds like we have similar view on collecting. Space is also an issue for me, and when a collection gets too large, you loose your connection to it. I think of a collection like a breathing organism. Records in, records out. But after each breath, the collection gets a little bit better. Now I'm spacing out a bit, but anyway. Thanks for sharing your views. Take care!

    @@vinylstockholm We ARE alike! You refer to your collections as a 'breathing organism,' and I refer to mine as 'fluid' (I like your description better). I have no problem parting with albums that I don't want to listen to anymore. Killer over filler.

    I think you're okay. It may have felt like you were passing judgment on other collectors even though you weren't. In addition a sizable part of the VC is audiophiles and that market is largely fueled by reissues. Maybe a few audiophiles might be defensive about OG collectors always going on about the superiority of originals. Who knows? My only slight disagreement with your manifesto related to compilations. Throughout the Seventies several music labels would release these compilations of artists on that label. At the time it was an excellent way of introducing listeners to performers they wouldn't have heard otherwise. I actually find these fun but like I said this is a very minor point. Now I feel like I've gone on too long. Have a good one. Happy collecting.

    Thanks Joe! I agree about old label samplers, there are some cool compilations on Vertigo, Harvest etc. And sometimes when these compilations has unique material, even I go for it. Thanks for sharing your views!

    I don't follow most of your rules but enjoyed discovering your channel. I think best of compilations are fine for certain commercially successful artists that don't have good deep tracks, and especially for stuff like collections of rare garage rock songs or music of a certain country/geographical area.

    Thanks! Agreed, there are some excellent well curated garage/psych compilations for sure, and some of those singles are very hard to find. Great way to explore certain genres. Cheers!

    What everyone is talking about is usuallly what I avoid. I have an original Mind Games and certainly don't need any new rendition of it. How, what or why people collect or don't should be nobody's business but their own. I have lots of records nobody but me would want. I like them and that's all that matters. People who put up hateful comments need to get a life!

    I gotta say I disagree with half of your points but enjoyed the video and subbed. I had an original VU and Nico album that I stole when I was 13 but I don't have that anymore. I have a decent 2nd or 3rd press but 90% of the banana is missing. I AM the king of my collection!

  • @vinylstockholm
    @vinylstockholm16 күн бұрын

    YES you are the king of your collection! Yeah, most of the time the banana is peeled, but still you have 10% left, and that's great! And the music is the same. Thanks a lot for commenting and subscribing!
