My Record Collecting Manifesto | Vinyl community
Музыка
This is how I collect records. A few simple record collecting rules that I live by. That makes my collection the best for me and makes collecting more exciting and fun. Also a good way not to get flooded with too many records (yes, you can have too many).

I listen to a lot of the KZread videos while driving to and from work every day so I don’t always comment. But I had to go back and see what the fuzz was about here in the comments. 😀 As you know we collect differently you and I and that is obviously fine. We have the same taste in music but our tummy tingles for obtaining different records. I think a lot of people out there has a lot to thank you for. They would prob only not have what they have in the shelves if it weren’t for guys like you pushing the information about the music. It’s one thing to be a fan, listening to and searching out the obscure music but you have done that AND shared it online for years and years. Spreading g the word. Maybe I got away from the subject here. Any way. The last paragraph is as you say the most important. You are the master of your own collection and collecting habits. Deepest respect!! Continue to do what you do Jonas and for the love of god, keep the videos coming!!! ❤

Thanks so much Jonas! It's not a big deal really, and some of the comments have been removed now (not by me). Like the one "You’re an authistic purist, not a music lover, therefor your manifesto is pure bullshit" Haha! 😂 And the same to you, you have been spreading the word for as long as I remember, I love your channel and my wantlist always expands after seeing your videos! Take care and have a great midsommar!! ❤️

Hi Darryl! Thanks for subscribing. I checked your channel and subscribed as well. There are so much great music from Canada, looking forward to watch your videos. Cheers!
Found your channel from Vinyl Dood. (I'm a fellow VC content creator / memer nerd) them: "DON'T TELL ME HOW TO LIVE! I HATE RULES!" meanwhile, them: "why do i have no record money? records are soo expensive :(" A wise man once said "your freedom ends where someone else's begins", and of course none of that is going on here. That's your whole point, & you put it so excellently. Collect! Enjoy! We all do that by default, anyway right? However, as an intelligent & better-educated community, it better serves us & others trying to collect- & thus adds to the enjoyment even more - when we can *curate*. Questlove talks a lot about curation, & I highly recommend him. Yeah man. Super appreciate you. Keep on groovin' your way & happy to be a new sub here! -mark

Hi, thanks! Yeah, these "rules" have evolved over time, and to me, I really think it makes it more fun to collect. Happy digging to you!
Hey Jonas, new subscriber thanks to HarrisPiltons shout out, some interesting takes you have there, I'm wondering the Beatles album you don't own, I'll guess either Beatles for sale or LIB? I have loads of Los Angles doowop comps that I love, actually I've just remembered some of those are on Swedish labels, but finding those on vinyl, I'd look and feel like Moses if by some miracle I happened to succeed, and as for completists, well I've an awful funny feeling I'm going to be a beach boys completist one day, which is absolutely nuts if you've heard anything at all about their later turkeys!! Cheers!
@vinylstockholm
Ай бұрын
Hi John, great points. Some compilations are the only way to get some rare tracks on vinyl for sure. Don't know much about doowop, but I guess there are some very rare stuff there. Good guess, but I have both LIB and For Sale. I don't have Yellow Submarine and With the Beatles at the moment, but records come and go here. Being a completist of Beach Boys is a massive task, I wish you the best luck finding them all! Take care and thank for commenting. Cheers!

I don't follow most of your rules but enjoyed discovering your channel. I think best of compilations are fine for certain commercially successful artists that don't have good deep tracks, and especially for stuff like collections of rare garage rock songs or music of a certain country/geographical area.
@vinylstockholm
Ай бұрын
Thanks! Agreed, there are some excellent well curated garage/psych compilations for sure, and some of those singles are very hard to find. Great way to explore certain genres. Cheers!
Great video, lovely to see how sane vinyl enthusiasts collect. Your manifesto is an intelligent way to avoid you collection spiralling out of control. There's no way I could be so steadfast in abiding by rules. I'm a vinyl scavenger by nature. I don't know what I'm going to buy until I see it. Luckily I adhere to some of your rules by default. Many of the records I collect only had one pressing, so I don't have much choice in pressings. Yay! One of my favourite folky country albums from the 70s is by a group called The Flatlanders. The album was originally only released on 8-Track tape. I'm sorry, there's no way I'm seeking that out a good 8-Track player to play one 8-Track tape. Good luck on your quest. Cheers - Hedley
@vinylstockholm
Ай бұрын
Hey Hedley! Don't know about that "sane" part though 😂 I haven't gotten so deep that I'm looking for 8 tracks, yet. But I have a friend here who collects 8 tracks, it's amazing how many obscure titles he's found, even old Swedish prog/psych releases. I have to check The Flatlanders, thanks for the tip. Take care and thanks for commenting!
Love the last rule! And I’ve always stuck to the 3rd if I can. I definitely should look into adopting rule 5 and 6 think I’ve been a bit guilty of those Question so with your 2nd rule I’m guessing that includes movie soundtracks?
@vinylstockholm
Ай бұрын
Yes! The last rule is the most important for sure. Soundtracks are fine if there's original music, I have for instance the Twin Peaks soundtrack and Neil Young's Dead Man soundtrack. Two fantastic albums! But if the soundtrack is just a bunch of old songs, it's not for me. Thanks for commenting and watching! Happy midsummer!
1 - Ja, but you didn't explain why. 2 - Ja, obviously. 3 - Ja. 4 - Nej, hell no. 5 - Obviously, ja. 6 - absolut, ja, säljer på en gång om det funkar inte för mig. 7 - yes, the biggest of those rules. Finns band jag har över 100 releases av, helt Ok med at jag saknar 2-3, pga jag älskar inte dessa. 7 - Yes.

I will gladly add well done reissues of rare and expensive albums to my collection. To rule them out, would limit my access to a lot of rare albums. Sometimes, reissues sound better than the originals, but not always. Compilations can also provide otherwise unavailable tracks on higher fidelity LP or CD.

Hi, that's a healthy approach to collecting for sure. I know I'm limiting my vinyl collection, but I listen to these rare records digitally. The only thing I miss about well done reissues are the booklets and extra information you get. Cheers!
Though I don't have so many stringent rules I follow when it comes to buying records for my own collection, I do have a life-long goal/project that I'm S-L-O-W-L-Y working towards, in that I want to own a 1st pressing copy, as close to mint as possible, of every record in the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die book. In that goal, the records HAVE to be 1st pressings, that is non-negotiable...as you can imagine I'm achieving this only incredibly slowly, with only around 50 of the records being accumulated so far
@vinylstockholm

That was great stuff, Jonas. Of course, to each their own like you said. Rules are meant to be personal, not for a group. I am nearly exclusively a collector of originals for many of the same reasons as you. In general, I think everyone should have a manifesto or set of guidelines that informs their buying habits, otherwise you end up buying everything and often listening to nothing. A big 'limiter' for me is space; I have a certain amount of space that I am willing to dedicate to records, so I have to have guidelines, but mostly I enjoy the sounds of the way the album came out originally. I do have a few albums that came out on cassette originally and those are the formats I have hose albums in. Anyway, very enjoyable video and thank you for sharing. Cheers, Tom
@vinylstockholm
Ай бұрын
Hi Tom! Sounds like we have similar view on collecting. Space is also an issue for me, and when a collection gets too large, you loose your connection to it. I think of a collection like a breathing organism. Records in, records out. But after each breath, the collection gets a little bit better. Now I'm spacing out a bit, but anyway. Thanks for sharing your views. Take care!
@highrantdistrict
Ай бұрын
@@vinylstockholm We ARE alike! You refer to your collections as a 'breathing organism,' and I refer to mine as 'fluid' (I like your description better). I have no problem parting with albums that I don't want to listen to anymore. Killer over filler.
I agree with most of that! I abide by those rules probably 75%. I like vintage bootlegs, and if there’s something I’ll never get the original of (like Fresh Blueberry Pancake) I’ll get a reissue. And I like audiophile reissues. But I like your style 🫡

Everyone has guidelines and rules about record collecting. Do you grab every single polka record you see? No? Then you have a rule not to fill your collection with polka records. That’s all this is, and they’re pretty good rules I think. I do break the first pressings only rule if the first pressing is thousands of dollars.

Tack! Kul att höra. Inga dumma referenser du nämner. Två artister jag gillar mycket.
I collect a lot of records, but my collecting philosophy is pretty different than yours. For me, I generally prefer the LP, no matter what era it's from, but if I find it prohibitively expensive, I go for the CD, which I actually think is better sonicially. For me, a physical collection is largely about having the artwork as assocating that with the music enhances the experience. I don't get any more of that with first edition copies, or any other kind of special editions, so I get what's affordable and still has decent fidelity. Condition and quality are most important, far more than rarity or age. I want my budget to cover more great music, rather than a lesser number of valuable records. I agree with you on the whole completeist thing though, as I don't bother owning all of the records by even my favorite artists, if I feel that they're lackluster musically. I somewhat agree with you on comps, though I make exceptions for comps that are larger anthology type things which have far more than just the obvious picks. Comps with unleashed stuff or that's only avaible as singles are good too, as are well curated various artist comps and in fact those VA comps are among many favorites of mine. If you want to dip your toes into some obscure genre, like Turkish psych, there's nothing better than a really well curated comp. I do own a bunch of singles, but the really desirable ones tend to be a poor value in my eyes and they're too much of a PIA to want to play very often, so they're a low priority. I'm OK with an album that has only a few good tracks as over time, I may warm up to the rest of it, and it's likely to cost no more than the single and will be much easier to find...

I gotta say I disagree with half of your points but enjoyed the video and subbed. I had an original VU and Nico album that I stole when I was 13 but I don't have that anymore. I have a decent 2nd or 3rd press but 90% of the banana is missing. I AM the king of my collection!

Millenials styled like Generation X
#4 is interesting- I collect 90’s hip hop, which was released on CD, so the reissues are digitally sourced and often are double or even triple albums due to the amount of tracks contained on CD’s, and the vinyl can be over 50 euros, so why not collect the original CD for a fraction of the price in it’s originally intended format? You can collect 90’s hip hop singles of your favourite track’s although those are much harder to find but I do have fun hunting them Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
@vinylstockholm
28 күн бұрын
Hi Dean, excellent point, that's my thought too. This mostly applies to records from the 90s, when CDs were standard. As you said, the artist started making longer albums, as the CD could hold more minutes, so the vinyl releases are often 2 LPs (and pressed from a digital source). So for me in these cases the original CD is better and much cheaper! Now, I'm just repeating what you said, but I totally agree. Good luck hunting those hiphop singles. Cheers!
Some great rules for your/a collection, For my self: OG's with shrink and hype sticker in Mint/VG+ (Japan og German grading, not UK :-) . If I am gonna have a record I want it as close to how it was when sold at the time.

Was very curious to watch what your manifesto was but I could NOT AGREE LESS. What a terrible idea!! What a ridiculous list of rules and restrictions. Most important thing for collectors is ITS THE MUSIC. Many collectors do not live in big cities or Europe to find rare first pressings. Many do not have the $$ or access to first pressings. Many reissues sound fantastic or better than OG’s. Singles are annoying and hard to store plus buying only vinyl is snobbery and limits your collection. I’ve collected for 5 decades now since the 70’s and have seen many trends and fads. You do you but your list is very negative and to me limiting and dumb. 😊
